How to Set Up and Register a PS5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1)

To add Sony’s detachable disc drive, first verify that your console is a compatible PS5 Digital Edition/slim or PS5 Pro model, then install the CFI-ZDD1 while the console is off and complete the required online pairing. “Registration” is the console-to-drive pairing process, not a separate account form.

What “registering” a PS5 disc drive means

The Sony PlayStation Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1 is a detachable optical drive for specific PS5 Digital Edition/slim and PS5 Pro console groups. The physical installation attaches the drive to the console; registration is the initial pairing that the PS5 performs over the internet after installation. Sony’s setup instructions do not describe a separate web form or standalone Sony-account registration for the drive.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Internet access is required once, during setup, to pair the drive and console. After pairing is complete, you can use supported game discs and video discs in the normal way. If the console cannot detect the drive, update the PS5 system software and restore a stable network connection before treating the problem as a hardware failure.

Check compatibility before opening the console

Do not assume that every disc-less-looking PS5 accepts the detachable drive. Read the model number on the console and compare it with Sony’s compatibility wording for your region and edition.

Console group Compatibility information for CFI-ZDD1 What to check
PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-2000 model group (slim) Listed by Sony’s product information as compatible Confirm the label on your console identifies the CFI-2000 group
PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-2100 Listed by Sony’s product information as compatible Confirm the exact CFI-2100 model number
PS5 Pro Listed by Sony’s product information as compatible Use the model number and the regional setup guide for the relevant PS5 Pro group
Regional model grouping Sony’s regional setup guide describes CFI-2000/7000 groups Model-group labels can vary by region; check the documentation supplied for your market

Sony identifies the accessory as model CFI-ZDD1 and states that it is for PS5 Pro consoles and PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 model group (slim) and CFI-2100. The regional guide’s CFI-2000/7000 wording is why checking the complete model number matters: use the number printed on your hardware rather than relying only on the console’s appearance or retail description.

Keep the original parts

Set aside the circular cover that came with the console and its original short horizontal feet. Sony says you need those parts if you remove the drive later. The drive kit supplies a replacement circular cover and longer horizontal feet for the installed configuration.

Compare the complete purchase, not just the drive

When choosing between a compatible drive, another console edition or a retailer bundle, compare the console model first, then the media you need to play. The CFI-ZDD1 adds physical PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD playback; it does not add support for PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs, burned discs or audio CDs. Check whether the package includes the replacement cover and long feet, and review the seller’s warranty and return terms in case the unit arrives damaged or is incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the total cost of ownership in your decision. A replacement HDMI cable is only an extra expense if your existing cable is missing or defective. A horizontal stand, replacement covers and a Blu-ray cleaning cloth are optional accessories, not prerequisites for pairing. Do not rely on a listing that omits the CFI-ZDD1 model number or claims universal PS5 compatibility.

Prepare a clean work area

  • A flat, stable surface covered with a soft, clean cloth
  • The CFI-ZDD1 drive, its circular cover and its long horizontal feet
  • Access to the PS5 power, HDMI and network connections
  • A reliable internet connection for the first pairing
  • Enough time for the console to shut down and cool completely

The instruction manual specifies an operating-temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F). Do not attach the drive while the console is hot. Before handling the connectors, touch a metal-grounded object to discharge static electricity. Keep fingers away from the drive terminal and the matching connector on the console.

Install the physical drive

Perform the attachment with the PS5 fully powered down, disconnected and cool. Rest the console on the cloth so its exterior is not scratched while you remove the cover and feet.

  1. Turn the PS5 off from the Control Center. Press the PS button, choose Power, then select Turn Off PS5. Wait until the power indicator is completely off; rest mode is not sufficient.
  2. Disconnect every cable. Remove the AC power cord and all other cables, including HDMI and any network or USB cables. Wait for the console to cool before continuing.
  3. Position the console. Place it bottom-up on the soft cloth with the front of the console facing you. Remove the short horizontal feet and put them somewhere safe.
  4. Remove the circular cover. Lift the cover slightly to release its clips, then take it off. Use even, controlled pressure rather than twisting the panel.
  5. Align the drive. Set the CFI-ZDD1 over the two marked holes. The drive’s clips must line up with the corresponding openings before you press down.
  6. Clip the drive into place. Press firmly and evenly until the clips engage and the drive clicks into position. Do not force it if the clips are misaligned.
  7. Fit the replacement cover and feet. Install the circular cover supplied with the drive, then attach the long horizontal feet supplied in the drive package.
  8. Reconnect and start the console. Reconnect the AC power cord, HDMI cable and any other required cables. Turn on the PS5 and wait for the system to finish its startup checks.

Do not operate the console with its cover removed. Avoid touching either connector, and do not move the console while it is hot. If the drive does not sit flush or the cover will not clip into place, turn the console off, disconnect it again and check the alignment instead of applying more force.

Pair and register the drive online

Once the drive is attached, connect the PS5 to the internet. On the console, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection, choose your wireless network or configure a wired connection, and complete the connection test if the PS5 offers one.

The on-screen setup should then prompt you to pair the disc drive with the console. Accept the pairing prompt and leave the PS5 powered on until it reports completion. This online pairing is the registration action most owners mean when they ask how to register the drive.

The internet requirement is for the initial console-to-drive pairing. It is not a request to create a separate drive account, and Sony’s setup instructions do not identify an additional registration number to enter manually. If the console is being configured offline, finish the basic setup, establish internet access, and then return to the drive prompt.

If the pairing prompt does not appear

  1. Check that the drive is seated fully and that the circular cover and feet are installed correctly.
  2. Install the latest PS5 system software through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  3. Restart the PS5 after the update.
  4. Restart the network router or access point, then reconnect through Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection.
  5. If wireless service is unstable, connect the PS5 by Ethernet for the pairing attempt.
  6. Return to the home screen and look for the drive setup prompt again.

A stable connection and current system software are prerequisites for troubleshooting pairing. Do not repeatedly remove and reinstall the drive while the console is powered or connected to AC power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify that the installation worked

Test the drive with a known-good supported disc after pairing. If the console is standing vertically, insert the disc with its labeled side facing left. The PS5 should recognize the disc, begin installing game data when appropriate, and show the game on the games home screen.

Disc type Support Expected use
PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game disc Supported Game installation and play from the PS5 games home screen
Compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game disc Supported Game installation and play when the title is compatible with the console
Ultra HD Blu-ray movie disc Supported Video playback
BD-ROM Supported Blu-ray playback
BD-R and BD-RE Supported subject to the limitations in the CFI-ZDD1 manual Blu-ray media playback within the manual’s stated conditions
DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW Supported DVD playback within the console’s supported formats
AVCHD Listed in the manual’s supported formats Playback of supported AVCHD media
PS1, PS2 or PS3 software discs Not supported The drive cannot make these disc generations playable on PS5
Burned discs and audio CDs Not supported by Sony’s troubleshooting guidance Use an approved game, Blu-ray or DVD disc for testing

For a clean test, use a disc that you know works in another compatible player or console. If the first disc is not recognized, remove it and try a second PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD before concluding that the drive is defective.

Troubleshoot pairing, detection and playback

Work through the checks in order. Reinsert the disc after each applicable step so you can tell whether the change fixed the problem.

The PS5 does not detect the drive

  1. Power the PS5 off completely with Power > Turn Off PS5, unplug it and wait for it to cool.
  2. Inspect the attachment. The drive clips should be aligned with both marked holes, and the drive should sit flush under the replacement circular cover.
  3. Reconnect the cables, start the console and install the latest system software at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  4. Reconnect to the internet and allow the pairing prompt to run.
  5. Try a known-good supported disc. A PS1, PS2, PS3, burned or audio CD cannot confirm drive compatibility because those formats are unsupported.

An error such as SU-101312-8, which indicates that the Blu-ray Disc drive does not exist, points to a detection problem. Follow Sony’s support steps for the error rather than repeatedly detaching the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The drive is detected but a disc is not read

  1. Eject the disc and inspect it for visible dirt, scratches or warping.
  2. Clean it with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center straight toward the outer edge. Do not wipe in a circular motion.
  3. Reinsert the disc with the labeled side facing left when the console is vertical.
  4. Try another supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD.
  5. Confirm that the test disc is not an unsupported format such as an audio CD or burned disc.
  6. Restart the PS5 and test again after the restart.

If several known-good supported discs fail while unsupported media is being used as the test, the result does not establish a hardware fault. Use only media listed in the supported-format table.

Pairing fails even though the console is online

  • Verify the PS5 can reach the internet in Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection.
  • Install pending system software updates before trying to pair again.
  • Restart both the PS5 and the router.
  • Use a wired connection temporarily if the wireless signal drops or the connection test is inconsistent.
  • Power the console off, unplug it, confirm the drive is clipped in correctly, then retry the setup prompt after reconnecting.

The drive’s initial pairing is an online requirement; an internet connection is therefore part of the setup, not an optional feature that can be skipped when the prompt appears.

Use Safe Mode only after the basic checks

If the drive remains undetected or discs continue to fail after the update, restart and use PS5 Safe Mode. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then allow the console to complete the process before testing a supported disc again. This option is a system-maintenance step; it does not replace correct physical seating, current software or a valid disc.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the CFI-ZDD1 is correctly installed, the PS5 software is current, the network is working and multiple supported discs still fail, use PlayStation Repairs for the next diagnostic or service step. Avoid repeatedly removing the drive, forcing the clips or operating the console without its cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a disc becomes stuck

Follow Sony’s separate stuck-disc procedure rather than improvising. The manual’s procedure uses a #1 Phillips screwdriver only where directed. Do not open or operate the console with the cover removed as a substitute for the official stuck-disc steps.

Removing the drive later

If you decide to remove the CFI-ZDD1, reverse the installation only after shutting the PS5 down fully, disconnecting every cable and allowing it to cool. Keep the drive, the supplied cover and the original short feet together. Refit the original cover and short feet when the drive is removed, because Sony identifies those parts as the correct components for the console’s undocked configuration.

Sony requires internet access for the initial pairing of the detachable drive and console. The setup instructions do not describe a separate offline method.

What if my PS5 does not detect the drive?

Check physical seating, update system software, reconnect to a stable network, and retry pairing. Error SU-101312-8 indicates a drive-detection problem; use PlayStation Repairs if the staged checks fail.

Which discs can the CFI-ZDD1 play?

It supports PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD formats listed in Sony’s manual. PS1, PS2, PS3 discs, burned discs and audio CDs are unsupported.

The Bottom Line

Check the exact PS5 model before buying Sony’s CFI-ZDD1. Install it only with the console shut down, unplugged and cool, retain the original cover and short feet, then connect to the internet for the required on-screen pairing. Confirm success with a supported game, Blu-ray or DVD; if updated software, correct seating and multiple known-good discs do not resolve the problem, use PlayStation Repairs.
