Before your first takeoff, charge the aircraft battery and controller, install DJI Fly, activate the drone in the app, and confirm that the app shows a refreshed Home Point with no unresolved warnings. Set a sensible Return-to-Home (RTH) altitude for the obstacles around your flight area, then make your first flight in an open, permitted place while keeping the drone in visual line of sight.
1. Inspect and prepare the Mini 5 Pro
- Check the box contents and inspect the aircraft for visible damage.
- Remove the gimbal protector and unfold the aircraft’s arms fully.
- Inspect the propellers. They should be correctly installed, undamaged, and not bent or deformed. Replace damaged blades according to DJI’s instructions; do not fly with a damaged propeller. See DJI Mini 5 Pro downloads and guides.
2. Charge the battery and prepare your controller
Charge the Intelligent Flight Battery before use and make sure the controller has enough charge for setup and flight. Follow the instructions for the controller included with your aircraft: DJI’s Mini 5 Pro guidance covers the DJI RC 2 and DJI RC-N3, but the connection and app steps can differ by kit. Check your box contents rather than assuming every bundle includes the same equipment.

3. Install DJI Fly and activate the aircraft
- Download DJI Fly through DJI’s official DJI Fly download page.
- Power on the aircraft and controller. If your controller requires a phone, connect the phone as directed for that controller.
- Open DJI Fly, connect or link the aircraft if prompted, and follow the on-screen activation steps. Keep the mobile device connected to the internet during activation.
DJI says initial aircraft activation is completed in DJI Fly. A combo controller may already be linked to the aircraft; if it is not, follow the linking instructions in the app. The RC-N3 does not require separate controller activation, according to DJI’s activation guidance. Do not assume a fixed activation time or a particular cable or screen sequence: follow the prompts for your kit. See DJI support’s activation guidance.
4. Follow any firmware update prompts
If DJI Fly offers a firmware update, follow the app’s instructions. DJI advises keeping the aircraft powered and leaving DJI Fly open during the update. The aircraft may power off when the update finishes, in which case restart it as directed by the app. Firmware versions and update screens can change, so use the prompts shown for your device rather than looking for a particular version number. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro guide and downloads provide product-specific instructions.

5. Set safety options and check the app before takeoff
Choose a suitable flight mode and obstacle response
For an initial flight, use Normal mode and review the obstacle-avoidance settings available in DJI Fly. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro guidance says obstacle avoidance is disabled in Sport mode, so do not use Sport mode as a beginner while relying on those protections.
Set signal-loss behavior and RTH altitude
DJI recommends setting the signal-loss action to RTH. Choose an RTH altitude above the obstacles along the expected return route, not merely above the takeoff point. Buildings, trees, terrain, wind, battery level, GPS, compass conditions, and signal quality can affect a return; RTH is not a guarantee that the aircraft will avoid every obstacle. Review DJI’s Return-to-Home guidance and the controls shown in your app before flying.

Confirm the aircraft is ready
- Resolve app warnings before takeoff; do not launch with an unexplained warning.
- Check that the signal is adequate.
- Confirm that DJI Fly shows the Home Point as refreshed or ready before moving away from the takeoff area.
If battery warnings indicate that there is not enough power to return, land promptly. Cancelling a low-battery RTH warning can leave too little power for a safe landing; DJI notes that an aircraft unable to return may land automatically. See DJI’s RTH and battery behavior information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Make your first flight simple and conservative
- Choose an open location where takeoff and landing are clear of people and obstacles, and where flying is permitted under the rules that apply to you.
- Keep the aircraft in visual line of sight and begin in Normal mode.
- Use small, deliberate control inputs. Stay close enough to maintain a clear view and a straightforward return path.
- Land with battery in reserve. Do not plan to use the full advertised flight time on a first flight.
Local aviation requirements vary by jurisdiction; check the rules where you intend to fly before taking off.

7. Land, power down, and store the aircraft
Land before the battery becomes critical, then power down and refit the gimbal protector before transport. DJI says that if rain begins during flight, return and land as soon as possible, then wait until the drone is fully dry inside and out before using it again. See DJI’s Mini 5 Pro product information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the advertised flight-time figures mean
DJI’s UK Mini 5 Pro listings state a maximum flight time of 36 minutes with the standard Intelligent Flight Battery and up to 52 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not guaranteed durations for a beginner’s flight or independent test results. Actual usable time depends on the battery, flight conditions, and the product or bundle available in your region. See the DJI Mini 5 Pro listing for regional product details.
