How to Set Up and Customize a Website Chat Widget

To add a website chat widget, first create and configure it inside your chat provider, then paste that account’s generated snippet into the pages where chat should appear. In a current Zendesk messaging setup, the admin chooses a Web Widget in Admin Center, sets the launcher and header appearance, defines greetings and response-time messages, copies the provider-generated code before the closing </body> tag, and verifies the live result. The exact code, menu names, and API depend on the provider and on whether your account uses current messaging or a legacy Chat product.

What a website chat widget actually includes

A chat widget is more than a colored bubble. It combines a visitor-facing launcher, a conversation window, a message and data-collection flow, and the service-side routing that sends conversations to your support team or automation. The website code loads that experience, but the provider’s administration area usually controls its text, appearance, availability, authentication, history, and handoff behavior.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That separation explains why there is no universal “chat widget code.” The snippet is generated for a particular provider account, product generation, and configuration. Copying code from another account, an old tutorial, or a different vendor can load the wrong widget or fail silently. Build the widget in the provider first, identify the product path your account uses, and then install the generated snippet.

Choose the correct widget path before changing code

Product names that sound similar can require different installation instructions. Zendesk documents a current messaging Web Widget, Web Widget (Classic), and a Chat-only widget. Its Chat Widget API overview applies to Chat-only accounts rather than Chat plus Support accounts. Treat those as separate implementation paths, not interchangeable labels.

Path Typical placement Configuration and developer control Important boundary
Current Zendesk messaging Web Widget Floating launcher on selected pages; can also be embedded in a target element Admin Center settings for basics, style, responses, wait time, authentication, history, and installation; supported messaging APIs for advanced changes Use the current messaging documentation and the snippet generated for this account
Messaging embedded mode A custom page container rather than an automatically rendered floating launcher JavaScript embed API targets an element; that element’s CSS supplies size and position More implementation work than the standard launcher; the target element must be designed and sized
Web Widget (Classic) or legacy Chat path Usually a floating widget, with instructions that differ from current messaging Separate Classic Chat API and installation documentation Do not apply current messaging code or settings to a legacy account, or vice versa

If the Admin Center labels, API references, or installation screen do not match the article you are following, stop and identify the account’s product generation. A legacy article can be technically correct for its own widget while being wrong for a current messaging account.

Prepare the site and support workflow

Decide where visitors should see chat

List the page types that need live help before installing anything: product pages, pricing, checkout, account areas, documentation, or a support landing page. A site-wide snippet may make the widget available everywhere, but the provider or your site template may let you restrict it to selected pages. Decide whether visitors should be able to start a conversation on every page or only where a team can respond.

Define the handoff you can actually deliver

Write down who receives a new conversation, what information they need, and what happens outside support hours. Your greeting and expected-response message should describe the real workflow. Do not promise an immediate reply if the queue is answered later, and do not request personal information that the support team does not use.

Confirm account access and product generation

You need administrator access to the provider’s setup area and permission to edit the site template or tag manager where the snippet will be placed. In Zendesk, an eligible account may already contain a default widget. That does not remove the need to check which widget and product generation are active before copying settings or API examples.

Step 1: Create or select the widget in the provider

Open the provider’s administration console and create the website widget. In Zendesk’s current workflow, an administrator selects a Web Widget in Admin Center. Some eligible accounts show a default widget that can be configured rather than creating a second one.

  1. Open the provider’s widget administration area. Use the current product navigation for your account, not a bookmarked legacy page.
  2. Select the website or Web Widget product. If several widget types are offered, confirm whether the account is using current messaging, Classic, or Chat-only functionality.
  3. Open the preview and configuration panels. Keep the preview visible while changing identity, appearance, and conversation behavior.
  4. Save or publish provider-side changes according to the interface. Configuration and installation are separate: the widget can be fully designed before its code is added to the site.

Step 2: Set the widget’s identity and visual style

Choose a launcher and header color

Set a primary color that works for both the launcher and the conversation header. Check it against the site background, light and dark sections, and any sticky navigation. A color that matches the brand but disappears against the page is a usability failure. The preview should update as you change the setting; use it to inspect the closed launcher and the open conversation view, not just one state.

Add a useful title and logo

The header title should tell visitors what they are opening, such as “Support” or “Talk to our team,” rather than an internal project name. If the provider supports an optional logo, use a clear asset that remains recognizable at the small size shown in the header. Avoid placing essential instructions only in the logo because it may be cropped or unavailable in some states.

Check contrast and context

  • Verify that the launcher icon and any text remain legible against the page background.
  • Open the widget on pages with cookie banners, sticky footers, or floating buttons so controls do not overlap.
  • Check desktop and narrow-screen layouts; a launcher that fits a desktop corner can cover mobile navigation or content.
  • Keep the title, logo, and color consistent with the site, while preserving enough contrast for visitors to identify the control.

Step 3: Configure the conversation experience

Zendesk’s current settings are organized around basics, style, responses, wait time, authentication, and installation. The labels differ by provider, but those categories are a practical checklist for any widget.

Write the first greeting

Use the first message to identify the team and explain what the visitor can do. A good greeting sets scope (“Ask about an order or account”) and, when relevant, points to the information a human agent will need. Keep it short enough to read before the visitor types.

Set follow-up prompts and information collection

Choose only the fields required for the support interaction. If an order number is necessary, ask for it explicitly; do not collect unrelated personal details. Make each prompt understandable without internal terminology, and ensure the support team can see and use the answers when the conversation is handed off.

Configure expected response and wait-time messaging

Set a response-time message that matches staffing and operating hours. If the team normally responds later, say so instead of displaying language that implies a live agent is watching continuously. Review the wording for both staffed and unstaffed periods, because a visitor’s expectation is formed before the first reply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether to show conversation history

Conversation history can prevent visitors from repeating context, but it also affects privacy on shared devices. Decide how long a returning visitor should see previous messages and whether the account’s identity model supports that experience. Explain any sign-in or remembered-session requirement in the widget’s own language.

Choose authentication deliberately

Authentication may be appropriate for account-specific support, while anonymous conversations may be better for presales or general questions. Match the setting to the data being discussed. Do not expose account details in an unauthenticated conversation, and do not force a sign-in flow for questions that do not require identity.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Step 4: Copy and install the provider-generated snippet

After configuration, open the provider’s installation section and copy the code generated for that widget and account. In Zendesk’s current messaging instructions, paste the snippet immediately before the closing </body> tag on each page where the widget should be available.

  1. Copy the complete snippet. Do not edit identifiers, substitute a snippet from another site, or combine code from current and legacy products.
  2. Open the site template or page layout. For a custom site, this is commonly the shared template that renders every page. A site builder may instead expose a custom-code or header/footer area; use that platform’s documented location.
  3. Paste the code before </body>. Keep it inside the page’s HTML document and preserve the provider’s script exactly.
  4. Publish the site changes. A draft template or unpublished page will not load the widget for visitors.
  5. Repeat or template the installation for intended pages. Confirm that the snippet is present on the page types selected in your rollout plan, and absent where chat should not appear.

Do not turn the current messaging rule into a universal rule for every Zendesk product. A separate legacy Chat article describes placing its script in the head while recommending the end of body to reduce the possibility of blocking page rendering. Those instructions belong to different widget paths. Follow the installation page for the product actually enabled in your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Use embedded mode when a floating launcher is not enough

The standard installation renders a floating launcher automatically. Use embedded mode when the design calls for chat inside a dedicated support page, sidebar, account panel, or other controlled location.

  1. Create a target element in the page. Give the container a stable identifier and enough width and height for the conversation interface.
  2. Apply CSS dimensions and placement. The embedded widget takes the size and position specified by the target container, so define behavior for desktop and narrow screens.
  3. Call the provider’s JavaScript embed API. Use the API and method documented for the current messaging product; do not substitute a Classic Chat API call.
  4. Disable automatic rendering as required by the provider. Embedded mode is intended to prevent the normal floating launcher from rendering in addition to the in-page widget.
  5. Test the container at realistic content lengths. Verify that the message list, composer, and error states remain usable when the page resizes.

Embedded mode is a developer-led layout choice, not a cosmetic toggle. If you only need a conventional corner launcher, the standard snippet is simpler and has fewer moving parts.

Step 6: Preview, publish, and inspect the live result

Use the provider’s preview while configuring the widget, then inspect the published site from a visitor’s perspective. Zendesk’s setup flow describes a preview and a “Test it now” option during configuration; use those controls to catch configuration errors before directing customers to the page.

  • Load every page type where the widget is intended to appear.
  • Confirm that the launcher opens and closes without covering key controls.
  • Check the title, logo, colors, greeting, prompts, and expected-response text.
  • Send a test conversation through the normal routing path and verify that the intended team or automation receives it.
  • Check the experience outside staffed hours if your provider supports different wait-time or availability messages.
  • Inspect a narrow viewport and a page with long content, sticky navigation, or a cookie notice.

A preview proves that the provider configuration can render; it does not prove that your production template contains the snippet on every intended page. Check the published HTML or browser behavior after deployment.

Customization decisions that have the biggest customer impact

Branding without hiding the control

Use the primary color, header title, and optional logo to make the widget feel part of the site, but preserve a recognizable launcher. If the color is too close to the page background or the logo is indistinct at small size, visitors may miss the support option.

Messages that match actual service levels

Greetings, follow-up prompts, and wait-time text should describe what happens next. A visitor who is told to expect a reply in a specific period should encounter that level of service in the queue. Update messages when staffing hours or routing changes.

Privacy and identity

Authentication and remembered history are product settings with privacy consequences. Use authentication for conversations that contain account-specific information, and be cautious about showing history on shared computers. Collect the minimum information needed to resolve the issue and make any required sign-in step clear.

Placement and page scope

A floating widget is appropriate when chat should be available throughout a site. An embedded container is better when chat is part of a designed support workspace. Restricting the widget to high-intent pages can keep the queue manageable, while a site-wide presence can make help easier to find; choose based on your staffing and visitor journey.

Provider-neutral guidance for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, and other builders

The documented installation details above are Zendesk-specific. They do not establish a universal click path for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, or another site builder. Those systems may offer a native integration, a custom-code field, a theme editor, or a tag-management option, and the names and permissions vary by plan.

The reliable sequence is the same: configure the widget in the provider, obtain the provider-generated snippet, place it in the site location recommended for that integration, publish, and inspect the live pages. If a builder sanitizes scripts or only accepts code through an app or integration, use that builder’s supported method rather than pasting JavaScript into a content block that strips it.

Troubleshooting: diagnose the failure by symptom

The launcher does not appear

  • Confirm the published page contains the complete snippet for the active account.
  • Check that the page is included in the widget’s intended scope and that the provider has not disabled the widget for that state.
  • Verify that you did not install a Classic or Chat-only snippet for a current messaging widget, or the reverse.
  • Inspect for a content-security, script-blocking, or site-builder restriction if the code is present but no widget loads.

The wrong colors, title, or greeting appear

  • Save or publish the provider-side configuration and allow for any caching layer to refresh.
  • Check that the page is loading the widget associated with the account you edited; a reused snippet can point to another configuration.
  • Open the provider preview to distinguish a configuration problem from a stale or incorrect site installation.

The widget is in the wrong place or overlaps content

  • For a standard launcher, inspect page elements such as sticky headers, cookie banners, and other floating controls.
  • For embedded mode, check the target element’s width, height, positioning, and responsive CSS.
  • Do not mix automatic floating rendering with an embedded implementation unless the provider explicitly supports both.

The API example fails

Re-check the product generation and account type first. Zendesk publishes separate current messaging and Classic Chat API documentation, and the Chat Widget API overview is for Chat-only accounts rather than Chat plus Support accounts. An API call copied from the wrong path can fail even when the JavaScript syntax looks correct.

Keep the widget reliable after launch

  • Record which provider product, account, snippet, and installation location are in production.
  • Review greetings, wait-time text, routing, authentication, and history whenever support hours or ownership changes.
  • Recheck the widget after theme, template, consent-banner, or navigation changes.
  • Keep current and legacy implementation notes separate so a future maintainer does not merge incompatible APIs.
  • Use the provider’s supported API for advanced theme or behavior changes instead of undocumented selectors or assumptions about internal markup.

A chat widget succeeds when visitors can find it, understand what will happen, provide only the information needed, and reach the right support path. The safest implementation is therefore deliberate: identify the correct product, configure the experience before installing code, use the generated snippet or documented embed API, and verify the published pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I paste a website chat widget’s code?

For Zendesk’s current messaging Web Widget, the documented location is immediately before the closing </body> tag on each page where the widget should appear. Legacy Chat instructions can differ, so use the installation page for the product enabled in your account.

Can I use one widget snippet on every page?

You can place the provider-generated snippet in a shared site template when chat should be available across the site. If only selected pages should show it, use the provider or site-builder controls that define page scope and verify the published result.

How do I change the chat bubble color and greeting?

Change the primary color, title, logo, greeting, prompts, and response-time text in the provider’s widget settings, then save or publish those changes. The provider preview should show the updated launcher and conversation view before you inspect the live site.

What is the difference between a floating widget and embedded mode?

A floating widget renders its launcher automatically, usually in a page corner. Embedded mode disables automatic rendering and uses a JavaScript embed API to place the conversation in a target element whose CSS controls size and position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should I check whether my account uses Classic Chat or current messaging?

Zendesk documents separate installation and API paths for current messaging, Web Widget (Classic), and Chat-only products. Code and navigation from one generation may not work with another, so identify the account’s product before following API or placement instructions.

Is a chat widget automatically available on WordPress, Shopify, or Wix?

No universal installation path is established. Those platforms may provide a native integration, custom-code field, theme setting, or app-based method. Use the site builder’s supported placement method with the snippet generated by your chat provider.

What should the widget say when no agent is immediately available?

Use the provider’s wait-time and response messaging to state the real expected response and operating conditions. Request only the details the team needs, and do not imply live coverage when the queue is handled later.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
