Connect it as the manufacturer specifies, confirm the default layout by typing, then make and test one supported change at a time.
Identify what your keyboard supports
Before changing hardware or installing software, find the model name and revision printed on the keyboard, packaging, or in its documentation. Use that information to locate the matching manual and support page. Check these details there:

- Supported operating systems and connection modes, such as wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz wireless.
- Physical layout and any keys that require a function layer or remapping.
- The manufacturer’s configuration utility and the correct firmware instructions.
- Whether switches are hot-swappable, and which switch types the board accepts.
- Whether remaps, lighting, saved profiles, macros, or gaming controls are available—and whether they work on your operating system and in the software or game you use.
Do not assume that features documented for one keyboard apply to another. For example, Corsair documents actuation controls for its magnetic-switch K70 PRO TKL; that does not make actuation adjustment a standard feature of ordinary mechanical switches. See the K70 PRO TKL manual and the MAKR PRO 75 manual for examples of model-specific controls.
Connect and check the default layout
- Choose a connection mode that both the keyboard and your computer support. Follow the maker’s instructions for wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz setup; the available modes and behavior depend on the model. ASUS’s ROG Azoth support FAQ illustrates how connection and configuration details are documented for a specific board.
- Open a text field and type several letters, numbers, and symbols. Check that the expected keys produce the expected characters before changing mappings.
- If the layout or connection does not behave as expected, consult the manual for that model and operating system rather than applying another keyboard’s instructions.
Set up the manufacturer’s software
Download the configuration utility from the keyboard maker’s support page for the exact model. Follow that model’s firmware instructions; do not install firmware intended for a different board. Depending on the product, the utility may offer key assignments, lighting, profiles, device settings, or gaming controls. For instance, the MAKR PRO 75 manual describes remapping, profiles, lighting, firmware, and settings, while the K70 PRO TKL manual documents its own key assignments and Game Mode.

- Open the matching utility and select the connected keyboard.
- Change one setting, such as a key assignment or lighting option, and save it using the method documented for the model.
- Test the change in the work application or game where you intend to use it.
- Close the utility or reconnect the keyboard in the mode you normally use. Check whether the setting remains active; some products offer onboard profiles, but persistence and platform support are model-specific.
Choose work and gaming settings deliberately
Separate profiles can help when a keyboard supports them: a work profile might assign frequent shortcuts, while a gaming profile might use game-specific mappings. Confirm in the manufacturer’s documentation that the keyboard can store or switch profiles in your intended connection mode and operating system. Test remaps in the actual application or game; a saved assignment is not proof that every game will recognize it as intended.
- Layout and desk space: A compact layout can leave more room for a mouse, but keys omitted from the physical layout may require a function layer or remap.
- Switch feel and sound: Choose according to your typing preference and the needs of people sharing the workspace. The manufacturer sources cited here do not establish one switch as universally best for work or gaming.
- Connectivity: Verify that the exact model supports the connection mode you want and behaves correctly with the target device.
- Configuration: Check support for remapping, profiles, onboard storage, macros, and any game-oriented controls before relying on them.
- Physical compatibility: Hot-swap support, switch type, layout, and large-key dimensions determine which hardware changes are possible.
Replace switches only on a compatible hot-swap board
Hot-swappable means switches can be removed from compatible sockets; it does not mean every switch fits or that it is safe to work on the keyboard while powered. The NuPhy and ASUS instructions both advise powering off before switch replacement. NuPhy also warns not to mix HE magnetic and mechanical switches. Check the exact model’s specifications before buying replacements; if the board is soldered or the switch type is uncertain, stop and consult its manual rather than forcing a switch.

- Turn the keyboard off and disconnect it from power.
- Remove the keycap above the switch with a keycap puller.
- Grip the switch with the correct switch puller and remove it carefully.
- Check that the replacement switch’s pins are straight and compatible with the board.
- Align the pins with the socket and press the switch straight down. Do not force it if it resists.
- Reconnect the keyboard and test the key before replacing additional switches.

Before buying a keycap set, compare its layout and profile with your keyboard, and check compatibility with the switch structure and the dimensions of nonstandard large keys. A set that fits standard letter keys may still lack the right sizes for a spacebar or other large keys. Use a keycap puller, pull straight up rather than twisting sideways, align the stabilizers when reinstalling large keys, and test that each key moves without sticking or rubbing. When a change does not work
- The wrong characters appear: Recheck the keyboard layout and default behavior before changing mappings.
- A remap or profile is missing: Confirm that the exact model and software support it, then check whether the setting was saved to the utility or an onboard profile.
- A setting disappears after reconnecting: Test it in the connection mode and on the device you plan to use, and check the manual for profile persistence details.
- A replacement switch will not seat: Stop. Recheck hot-swap support, switch type, pin alignment, and whether the board accepts that switch. Never force a mismatched part.
- A keycap sticks or rubs: Remove it and check its fit and stabilizer alignment before using the keyboard further.
