To set up a VR headset for PC gaming, first confirm that your exact headset and connection method are supported, then follow its setup flow to connect the hardware and define your play area. For visual clarity, adjust the headset’s fit and, where supported, its IPD—the distance between your pupils—while checking centered text in both eyes. The steps vary by headset, so use model-specific instructions rather than treating one brand’s port or adjustment controls as universal.
1. Check that your headset and PC connection are supported
Identify the headset model and decide whether you will connect it by cable or stream wirelessly. Then check the current requirements for that exact combination before installing software or troubleshooting. SteamVR supports multiple headset families, but support depends on the headset and setup. Steam Link has its own supported-device list and PC and network requirements, which can change over time.

Use the official Steam Link compatibility and requirements page for a Steam Link setup, and the SteamVR page to check SteamVR support. Do not assume that a headset supported over a wired connection will also work through Steam Link, or that Steam Link’s network requirements apply to wired PC VR.

2. Prepare a clear play area
Choose a space suited to the kind of game you plan to play. Seated and standing experiences can require less open floor area than room-scale games. Clear obstacles from the play space and follow your headset’s setup flow to establish its boundary and tracking space.

For the original HTC Vive, Valve specifies a minimum room-scale area of 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft). Valve says seated or standing-only Vive experiences have no minimum space requirement. These dimensions and qualifications apply to the Vive; they are not universal requirements for all headsets. See Valve’s Vive FAQ.
3. Connect the headset and complete its setup
Follow the instructions for your specific model. Headsets can differ in the ports, companion software, drivers, tracking hardware and wireless steps they require. For example, Valve’s Index setup guide calls for connecting the headset to a USB 3.0 port, checking that the devices show as ready in the SteamVR monitor, and then following the on-screen room setup. Those port instructions are for Index, not a general rule for every PC VR headset.

For an Index, follow Valve’s Index setup guide. For another headset, use that model’s own setup instructions and verify its ready or connected status in the relevant software before starting a game.

4. Adjust IPD and headset fit for a clear image
IPD, or interpupillary distance, is the distance between the centers of your pupils. An appropriate setting and a well-positioned headset help with image clarity; HTC notes that incorrect adjustment can contribute to eye strain. Controls vary by headset, and not every model uses a mechanical IPD adjustment.

For HTC VIVE headsets covered by HTC’s guidance
- Put on the headset and look at centered text in the virtual display.
- Adjust the lens distance using the headset’s IPD control until the text looks clear.
- If one eye still sees less clearly than the other, reposition the headset on your face and check the text again.
- Repeat the adjustment and fit check until the image is as clear and balanced as you can make it.
HTC says an eye-care professional can provide the most accurate IPD measurement. A mirror-and-ruler measurement or trial adjustment is an estimate, not a substitute for professional measurement. See HTC’s VIVE IPD adjustment guidance. If your headset uses software controls or a different fit system, follow its own instructions rather than looking for a Vive-style knob.
5. Verify the floor, direction and tracking in the game
Before playing, check that text is clear when viewed straight ahead in both eyes, tracking is stable, the virtual floor aligns with the real floor, and the defined boundary is clear of obstacles. These checks help identify setup problems; they do not guarantee that a particular setting will prevent motion sickness.

If the virtual floor height or the front direction of the space is wrong, rerun SteamVR Room Setup and follow its prompts. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance identifies Room Setup as the way to correct those issues: SteamVR and Index setup troubleshooting.

Start with alignment rather than assuming the PC needs a graphics change. Check that the headset sits securely in the intended position, then adjust IPD if your model provides that control. On a supported VIVE, HTC recommends checking centered text and repositioning the headset if clarity remains uneven between eyes. If the image is still blurry, consult the headset maker’s fit and display troubleshooting instructions; adjustment controls and procedures differ by model.

How to fix an incorrect VR floor height
For SteamVR, run Room Setup again if the virtual floor or forward direction is incorrect, then follow the on-screen calibration prompts. If the problem persists, check that the headset’s tracking space and boundary match the physical area and that the headset setup has completed successfully.
