Wi-Fi can be slower or less consistent than Ethernet because it shares radio spectrum and its performance changes with distance, walls, interference, other devices, and equipment capability. Ethernet avoids that wireless link between your device and router, so it is often steadier—but it cannot overcome limits in your broadband service, network hardware, device ports, or the server you are connecting to.
Why Wi-Fi can be slower than Ethernet
A speed test measures a path, not just your Wi-Fi connection. Data travels from the device through your local network, router, broadband connection, and test server. Any one of those links—or a busy device or network—can constrain the result. The IETF’s RFC 9318 identifies local connection method, competing LAN traffic, device load and configuration, time of day, and local-loop or backhaul capacity as factors in the capacity and latency users experience.

Wi-Fi shares the air
Unlike a dedicated cable, Wi-Fi uses radio channels that can be affected by other clients and nearby networks. Distance, walls and other building materials, electrical or radio interference, and access-point placement can weaken or disrupt the signal. Performance can also change as devices join the network or usage increases. The U.S. Department of Education’s connectivity guide recommends considering device placement and checking for interference at different times.

If both wired and wireless tests are slow, the cause may be the broadband link, router, device, network traffic, or test destination rather than Wi-Fi alone. Ethernet improves only the local segment it replaces; it cannot make the rest of the route faster than its limits.

Nor is every Wi-Fi connection inherently slow. In a February 2026 residential trial, the Wireless Broadband Alliance reported that Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO) delivered up to double the aggregated throughput under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference compared with legacy single-link operation. The trial also reported 35–48% lower application-layer latency and up to 40% lower MAC-layer jitter. Those results apply to the trial configuration—a commercial tri-band access point and Intel BE200 client in a 4,500-square-foot home—not to every Wi-Fi 7 setup or workload. Wi-Fi or Ethernet: which fits your use?
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Consistency | Often the steadier choice when the wireless link is variable or congested. | Can change with signal conditions, interference, placement, and active clients. |
| Mobility | Best suited to equipment that stays in one place. | Lets phones, tablets, and laptops move around without a cable. |
| Setup | Requires a cable run to the router or a network switch; routing can be inconvenient. | Usually avoids running a cable to each device. |
| Performance ceiling | Limited by cable, endpoint ports, router or switch, broadband service, and remote endpoint. | Limited by radio conditions and device and access-point capability, as well as the rest of the network path. |
Choose Ethernet when stability matters and wiring is practical
A wired connection is worth considering for a stationary desktop, game console, television or streaming box, or work computer if Wi-Fi is the weak or variable part of the connection. It can also suit large transfers between devices on a local network when predictable throughput matters. These are practical use cases, not a guarantee of a particular speed increase: the benefit depends on whether Wi-Fi is actually the limiting link.

Keep Wi-Fi when mobility or convenience matters
Wi-Fi is a sensible choice for mobile devices, temporary setups, rooms where routing a cable is difficult, and everyday tasks that already work reliably. You do not need to buy an Ethernet cable simply to have good internet service.
How to find out whether Wi-Fi is the problem
- Run a wired test. Connect the same computer directly to the router, or to a network switch connected to it, and run a test using the same service you will use for Wi-Fi.
- Test Wi-Fi from the same computer and location. Keep the broadband plan and test service the same. If you cannot test both connections from the same spot, note the difference in location as a possible factor.
- Repeat at different times. Record what else is using the network. One result may reflect temporary LAN or broadband traffic, device conditions, or changes at the test destination. The IETF and the Department of Education guide both describe factors that can vary over time.
- Compare latency as well as throughput. A low ping when the network is idle does not tell you how responsive it will feel while downloads or uploads are underway. RFC 9318 distinguishes idle latency from working latency under typical network load and notes that end-to-end latency can include propagation, buffering, retransmission, and application delay.
Interpret the results
- Wired is consistently better: Wi-Fi may be the weak segment. Check router placement, signal conditions, interference or channel congestion, and whether the client device supports the capabilities you expect.
- Both connections are poor: Check other devices and network traffic, then consider the router, endpoint device, broadband service, and test server before replacing Wi-Fi equipment.
- Results vary by time: Repeat the comparison under similar conditions. In measurements discussed by RFC 9318, 36% of measured lines had capacity metrics that varied by more than 10% throughout the day and across multiple days. This finding is not a Wi-Fi-versus-Ethernet comparison; it illustrates why a single test may not represent typical performance.
Latency under load can differ substantially from an idle ping. RFC 9318 reports working latency between 6 and 25 times higher than idle latency, depending on traffic direction and access technology, in its FTTH, cable, and DSL examples. Those figures are not a controlled Wi-Fi-versus-Ethernet comparison.

Match the cable and ports to the connection
A cable’s category does not determine the speed by itself: both ends of the link and any intermediate router or switch must support the desired rate. The U.S. Department of Education’s 2017 guide identifies Cat 6a twisted-pair cabling as supporting Ethernet speeds up to 10 Gbps. That is a cable capability, not a promise that your devices, network equipment, broadband plan, or remote service can reach 10 Gbps. For many setups, Cat 6a is unnecessary if the other link components support a lower rate.
