To set up an Xbox, connect it to an HDMI-compatible TV and broadband internet, turn it on, then follow the on-screen prompts or use the Xbox app. You’ll need a Microsoft account for online setup and account-linked features. Check the console box before buying a cable: Xbox’s Series X|S setup guide lists an HDMI cable among the included items.
What do you need to connect an Xbox to a TV?
Xbox lists four basic setup needs: an Xbox console, an HDMI-capable television, broadband internet and a Microsoft account. Have the console’s power cable and your account credentials ready, too. For Xbox Series X|S, check the box contents before buying an HDMI cable; the official setup materials list one with both models.

A wired broadband connection or Wi-Fi can work for setup. Ethernet is optional, not a separate requirement: use it if you prefer a wired connection and can reach your router.
How do you set up an Xbox?
- Connect the display. Use the HDMI cable supplied with the console to connect it to an HDMI-compatible TV or monitor. If the cable is missing or damaged, check the requirements for your model and display setup before replacing it.
- Connect to the internet. Follow the console’s included instructions to connect through Wi-Fi or wired broadband.
- Turn on the console. Xbox says the startup process begins the console update. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue.
- Complete setup and sign in. Continue on the console or use the Xbox app on a phone while the console updates. Sign in with a Microsoft account when prompted.
The screens and app prompts can change with console software. Follow the instructions shown for your console rather than relying on an older button-by-button walkthrough.

Can you set up an Xbox with the Xbox app?
Yes. Xbox recommends downloading the Xbox app for iOS or Android while the console updates; the app can help complete setup. It is an option, not a stated requirement. You can also follow the setup flow on the console itself.
Xbox account features include free-to-play online multiplayer and community experiences, according to Xbox Wire. Requirements vary by game and feature, so check the current terms for the specific title or service you want to use.

Does an Xbox need internet to set up?
Online setup, downloads, mandatory updates and some features require broadband, a Microsoft account and an Xbox profile, according to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X + S manual for the US and Canada, published around the 2020 launch generation. That manual gives a figure of 1.5 Mbps download and 768 Kbps upload. Treat it as a dated manual figure, not a current universal recommendation for broadband speed; the connection you need in practice can depend on downloads and the features you use.

Which HDMI cable do you need for Xbox Series X or Series S?
For a direct connection from console to TV, start with the cable included in the box. If you are connecting through an audio/video receiver, Xbox Wire’s November 2020 TV guidance specifies Ultra High Speed HDMI for Series X, and High Speed HDMI or HDMI Premium for Series S, between the console, receiver and TV. Check the full signal chain rather than replacing only one cable by assumption.
Whether you can use a particular picture mode or refresh rate depends on the capabilities of the console, TV and any receiver in the path. Xbox’s cable guidance does not guarantee that every display chain supports 4K at 120 Hz.

What if setup fails?
If the console does not complete setup, consult the current Xbox Support instructions for your specific issue. Available official setup guidance does not establish one universal repair sequence for a blank screen, network error, sign-in problem or stalled update; avoid trying a reset procedure that is not confirmed for your console and situation.

Do you need to buy an Xbox storage expansion card?
No. Additional storage is an option if you run out of space, not a setup prerequisite. Xbox lists three ways to make room: uninstall games you are not using, attach an external hard drive, or add a Series X|S storage expansion card. Choose based on how much space you need and the compatibility requirements of the storage option.
