The setting adds a shorter rotation cadence alongside the automatic rotation that happens once every 180 days. If you need a password change sooner, an administrator can trigger an on-demand rotation for an eligible Mac.
What the 180-day limit means
In Microsoft’s macOS LAPS setup guidance, the ADE enrollment profile setting is named Admin account password rotation period (days). Its documented range is 1–180 days. Microsoft says a configured period is “in addition to the automatic rotation that happens once every 180 days.” In other words, this setting establishes an additional, shorter cadence; it is not a maximum-age field you can raise above 180 days. Microsoft’s macOS LAPS setup documentation does not document a configurable interval greater than 180 days.

So if the goal is to lengthen the scheduled password lifetime beyond 180 days, Intune’s documented macOS LAPS controls do not offer that option. Manual rotation is available for an immediate operational need, but it does not change the recurring schedule.

How to rotate the password on demand
- In the Intune admin center, open Devices > All devices and select the eligible Mac.
- Choose Secure, then select Rotate local admin password. Microsoft lists macOS ADE as a supported platform for this device action. See Microsoft’s device-action documentation.
- Confirm the action and allow the device to check in and process it. The action rotates the configured local administrator password; it does not create a longer recurring interval.
You can check the rotation time in the device’s Overview under Monitor > Passwords and keys. Microsoft also records password viewing and rotation as Intune audit events.

Check enrollment and permissions first
macOS LAPS has specific enrollment prerequisites. Microsoft’s setup guidance requires macOS 12 or later, device synchronization to Intune from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, and ADE enrollment after a factory reset. Re-initiating ADE from an existing macOS installation—for example, with profiles renew—is not supported.
To view or rotate the password, an administrator needs the Enrollment programs permissions View macOS admin password and Rotate macOS admin password, respectively. Microsoft says these permissions are not included in Intune’s built-in roles, so assign them deliberately through an appropriate role.

The configured account is created through the ADE profile. Microsoft describes its password as generated, randomized, encrypted, and stored by Intune. The documented password is 15 characters and includes lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and special symbols. The local admin account does not receive a secure token because of platform limitations; Microsoft says the first account to sign in after enrollment receives it, which at this time is the local user account.
Prevent other password policies from disrupting LAPS
Microsoft warns that compliance password requirements can expire passwords, including those created by LAPS. For device password management, its guidance recommends a settings catalog policy with Change at next auth set to False. Password settings in compliance or device restriction profiles can enable that behavior by default, which may cause sign-in problems with newly created LAPS accounts. Review the applicable macOS compliance settings and macOS device restriction settings before deploying overlapping password policies.

Known issue on macOS versions earlier than 26.4
Microsoft documents a version-sensitive issue affecting macOS earlier than 26.4. When a Mac enrolls through ADE with a configured local admin account and a targeted passcode profile, it may prompt for an administrator password reset even when Change at next auth is disabled or Max Age (days) is set. The standard account is not affected. Microsoft’s stated workaround is to manually rotate the admin password after the reset so Intune and the device remain synchronized; upgrading to macOS 26.4 resolves the issue. Check Microsoft’s current macOS LAPS guidance for the latest status before acting.
