Some Lenovo laptops can be upgraded, but there is no brand-wide answer: upgradeability depends on the exact model, generation, and configuration. RAM may be soldered in place, while an SSD or battery may have a documented replacement procedure. Check your laptop’s Lenovo specifications and repair documentation before buying a part or opening the case.
Which parts of a Lenovo laptop can you upgrade?
Start with the component, not the Lenovo family name. A Yoga label, for example, does not establish whether a particular machine has removable memory or a replaceable drive.

RAM: check for a memory slot
Do not assume laptop RAM is upgradeable. Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 specifications list 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of soldered memory and state that it is not upgradable; the memory is soldered to the system board with no slots. Lenovo’s ThinkPad Yoga 12 platform specifications likewise describe soldered memory with no sockets, up to 8GB.
Treat RAM as non-upgradeable unless the exact product specification identifies a removable memory slot. If memory is soldered, replacing it generally means replacing the system board rather than adding a memory module.

- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
SSD or hard drive: confirm the interface and bay
Storage is sometimes replaceable, but the drive type and fit vary. Lenovo lists one M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot for the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 and provides a model-specific SSD removal and replacement procedure. That model’s specifications list 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB SSD offerings, plus 2TB in a performance listing. Lenovo describes support up to 2TB based on its current tested storage offerings and notes that capacity support may change as technology develops; this is not a universal limit for Lenovo laptops.
Older ThinkPad Yoga platform specifications document different storage arrangements, including removable 2.5-inch SATA SSDs or hard drives and an M.2 SSD option. These are platform configuration options, not proof that every unit has all the listed bays or drives. Check the exact configuration before selecting a compatible replacement SSD.

Battery and other internal parts: look for a procedure
Some Lenovo systems have official removal and replacement instructions for batteries and other components. The X13 Yoga Gen 4 self-repair guide includes a built-in battery procedure. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 13 support page lists videos covering the built-in battery, memory module, and M.2 SSD, among other parts. These instructions apply to the named systems; they do not establish that every Lenovo battery or internal part is user-replaceable.

- Identify the full model. Find the product name and model or machine type on the laptop label, in BIOS or system information, or through Lenovo Support’s product detection. A broad family name alone is not enough.
- Read the exact PSREF specification. In Lenovo’s Product Specifications Reference, check memory capacity and slots, storage interface and slot, and configuration footnotes. The X13 Yoga Gen 4 PSREF is one example of the model-level detail available.
- Find the repair documentation. Open the model’s Hardware Maintenance Manual or Lenovo self-repair page and look for the component’s removal and replacement instructions. Note any brackets, thermal pads, cables, or configuration-specific parts. For example, Lenovo’s X13 Yoga Gen 4 guide covers SSD replacement.
- Match the replacement to the specification. Confirm interface, physical dimensions, capacity, and other requirements. The X13 Yoga Gen 4’s M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 specification is an example for that model only; do not apply it to another Lenovo without checking.
- Review service terms for your product and region. Warranty and service rules are not established by one rule that applies to the entire Lenovo range, so consult the terms for your specific laptop before doing the work.
Lenovo’s support pages can also help you locate documentation by model. For instance, the Yoga 6-13ALC6 documentation page lists its User Guide, Hardware Maintenance Manual, Product Specifications Reference, and other documents.
