Connect OBS to an encoder stream in YouTube Studio using its server URL and stream key, then test the actual audio, motion, preview, and stream health before going public.
This setup repeats media while OBS and the computer remain running; it is not a guarantee of unattended 24/7 continuity. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not promise that an OBS/VLC playlist will run uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer.

Choose the right OBS source for the display
| Need | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Content | One local media file | A playlist of media files |
| Repeat control | Loop | Loop Playlist |
| Dependency | Built into OBS | VLC must be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS |
| Best fit | One repeating promotional clip | An ordered or shuffled retail-display playlist |
For multiple clips, use VLC Video. OBS describes it as allowing a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow. For a single clip, Media Source has its own loop control. OBS’s Media Sources documentation was published on 2022-01-11; check the current interface if labels have changed. OBS Project: Media Sources
Prepare the playlist and scene
Organize your clips
Put the display videos in a local folder the computer can access while the stream runs. Decide the order before adding them, and check the sound levels and transitions where one clip ends and another begins. OBS documents common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.

Add VLC Video and set its behavior
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC; the VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries.
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the display. In the Sources panel, choose +, select VLC Video, and create or select the source.
- In the source properties, add the media files to the playlist. Check that the files appear in the intended sequence.
- Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents it as on by default, but verify the setting. Turn shuffle off for a predictable retail sequence; enable it only if a changing order is intended.
- Make sure the source is visible in the scene. Fit it to the canvas and inspect the preview at the intended display size, especially small text, prices, and product details.
OBS documents the source types and playlist controls, but it does not specify a retail-display layout standard. Check that captions, logos, and important text remain within the visible frame and that transitions look acceptable in the actual scene.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s stream settings. Use the current labels presented by YouTube and OBS; their interfaces may change.
- Treat the stream key like a password. It tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it, so do not display or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.
- Start the OBS stream and check the Live Control Room preview before making the retail display public.

Test the video, audio, and encoder settings
Do a private or otherwise non-public test before relying on the display. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement like the actual stream, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream health and messages. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, and CBR among the settings; it recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and the reliable upload bandwidth available at the store rather than assuming the connection can sustain a particular rate.
- Play representative clips, including the loudest audio and clips with the most motion.
- Watch for black frames, cropped content, silent clips, abrupt audio changes, and unreadable text.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages while OBS is sending.
- Confirm the local internet connection has enough stable upload capacity for the selected encoder settings.
YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Encoder recommendations and interface details can change; verify the current Live Control Room guidance for your stream. YouTube Help: Encoder settings for live streaming

Plan for what looping does not cover
Loop Playlist repeats media; it does not itself restart OBS after a computer crash, restore a lost internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube will keep the same public stream active indefinitely. YouTube says all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is an archiving rule, not a promise of uninterrupted service for a longer session, and the cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed restart procedure for this OBS/VLC workflow. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Assign someone to monitor the computer, network, OBS output, and YouTube stream health, and decide what to do if the stream ends. The official guidance cited here does not establish a hardware specification or guarantee for unattended 24/7 operation.

Check content rights and YouTube suitability
Before streaming, confirm that your store has permission to use every video, image, logo, and music track in a public livestream. A track or clip that is licensed for in-store playback may not automatically be cleared for YouTube streaming. A looped playlist is still a public video stream: repeating content does not grant rights or ensure that it complies with YouTube policies. Review rights for each item and check the current YouTube rules relevant to your channel and content before going live.
