YouTube Studio’s Live traffic-source report shows where viewers discover your 24/7 stream—through Search, Suggested videos, external links, playlists, and other paths. Use it to form specific programming and promotion ideas, then check whether those viewers actually watch. It is a diagnostic tool, not a recipe that guarantees more recommendations.
Where are viewers finding my live stream?

Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics.

Open the Content tab and select the Live chip.

Find How viewers find your live streams. Select the relevant report or source to inspect its detail, such as search terms or videos that suggested your stream.

The precise layout and available detail can vary with your channel and Studio’s interface rollout. YouTube says an updated Studio experience began rolling out in July 2026, and some Analytics data may be limited. What the traffic-source categories mean
Start with the overall source mix, then open the categories that provide useful detail. The names describe recorded discovery paths; they do not tell you by themselves why YouTube showed the stream or whether a viewer stayed.

YouTube’s traffic-source glossary describes these categories. Availability and relevance differ by video and channel; use the categories Studio actually reports rather than assuming every path applies.
How to turn Search terms into content experiments
Review the terms bringing viewers to the stream and group them by the intent they reveal. Depending on what appears in your own report, viewers may be looking for a particular subject, ambience, event, or use case. Treat those as hypotheses to investigate, not a list of keywords to insert indiscriminately.

Record the actual phrases. Note terms that recur or clearly express a topic viewers want. Do not infer demand from one brief spike.

Match the phrase to the stream. If it accurately describes the ongoing programming, test clearer wording in the title or description. Keep the promise specific to what a viewer will hear or see.

Consider a companion video or stream segment. A recurring search topic may support a focused related upload or a clearly labeled programming block, if that fits the channel.

Compare outcomes over a suitable period. Check whether Search views changed and whether viewers watched meaningfully, rather than treating the term itself as proof that an edit worked.

YouTube says, “Find ideas for new content in the search terms viewers are using to find you.” Its guidance also says YouTube Search “could indicate how effective your video title and description are.” These are diagnostic uses of the report, not a claim that adding a term guarantees a higher search position. How to learn from Suggested videos
Open the Suggested videos detail and look at the specific videos associated with incoming views. Seek genuine connections: a shared subject, audience need, or complementary format. If there is a natural fit, consider related programming, an appropriate playlist, collaboration, or a relevant link where you have permission and control.
Do not copy unrelated creators or assume that one appearance predicts future placement. YouTube describes recommendations as personalized and influenced by viewer-specific histories and the video currently being watched. The report shows contexts that have sent viewers; it does not promise that YouTube will keep recommending the stream. How to use external sources and playlists
External referrals
Inspect the websites and apps listed under External. If a referral source is relevant to your audience, consider making the stream easier to share or embedding or linking it from a suitable community or page you control. Then check not only whether that source sent views, but whether the visits produced watch time and sustained viewing. YouTube impressions do not include thumbnail displays on external websites and apps, so do not treat external referrals as if they were YouTube impressions.
Playlist and channel pathways
For playlists, check whether the listed playlist fits the stream and whether it belongs to your channel or another creator. Maintain useful playlists and channel navigation for related programming; do not assume inclusion can be purchased or guaranteed. If channel pages or other YouTube features appear in the report, use their actual contribution to decide whether clearer navigation or related content is worth testing. How to tell whether a change helped
For each experiment, compare discovery with audience quality. A source that sends more views is not automatically a source that helps the stream’s overall performance.

- Views by source: Did the source’s traffic change after the experiment?
- Impressions and click-through rate: Where available, did YouTube thumbnail exposure and the share of impressions that became views change? Impressions cover YouTube surfaces, not external sites and apps.
- Average view duration and watch time: Did viewers from the source stay and contribute viewing time?
- Concurrent viewers: Compare average and peak concurrent viewers where those metrics are available, while remembering that peaks can reflect brief events.
Use comparable date ranges and streams with similar format and programming. YouTube recommends looking for patterns among top live streams and comparing like formats because audience behavior differs. Make one interpretable change at a time and keep a short log of what changed, when, and what you checked afterward. Revisit the report after enough data has accumulated to make the comparison useful; there is no universal traffic-source percentage or fixed waiting period established here.
Analytics is based on Video ID, and processed or despammed data can differ from Live Control Room figures. Choose a consistent reporting surface when comparing periods. YouTube also changed its views methodology beginning August 24, 2026: views count when a video starts to play across Shorts, long-form VOD, and live streams. That is a measurement-method update, not evidence that audience growth occurred. See live-stream metrics and YouTube content performance guidance.
Use audience timing as context
The Audience report’s When your viewers are on YouTube view reflects activity across YouTube over the last 28 days and can help plan a live stream. For a continuous stream, use it to plan a promoted moment or a programming change; it does not establish that choosing a particular start time will improve discovery for an always-on broadcast.
