Most MacBook Pro M3 Max setup problems can be handled without erasing the Mac. Connect to reliable internet, check power and accessories, then use macOS Recovery for startup-disk repair or a reinstall only if basic steps do not work. The M3 Max follows the same Apple silicon setup and Recovery procedures as other supported Macs; Apple does not identify these issues as specific to the M3 Max.
What to prepare before setup
- Have a Wi-Fi network that can reach the internet. Some Setup Assistant steps require internet, and a macOS update may be part of the first setup.
- Connect the supplied power adapter and cable if the Mac needs charging or you are preparing to transfer data.
- If moving data from another Mac, update macOS on both computers when possible and keep them nearby for a wireless transfer.
- If you already have a Time Machine backup, keep it available. You can use it during setup or transfer data later.
Apple’s MacBook Pro setup guide says to open the lid to turn on the computer and follow Setup Assistant. It guides you through network connection, transfer choices, accessibility options and account creation, along with settings such as Location Services, Screen Time, Siri and Touch ID.

Choose how to transfer data
Transferring data is optional. Setup Assistant can move information from another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, or a Windows PC; supported systems may also offer setup with a nearby iPhone or iPad. You can configure the Mac as new and use Migration Assistant later. Apple explains the available paths in its Migration Assistant guide.

If Mac migration is taking forever
Keep the computers close together with Wi-Fi enabled for wireless migration. A large transfer can take hours and may appear to pause. For Mac-to-Mac transfer, Apple says a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster, but it is not a guarantee that every stalled transfer will be fixed. Check that the cable suits both computers’ ports. For a Windows transfer, confirm that you are using the version of Windows Migration Assistant that matches the Mac’s macOS, then enter the displayed pairing code.

If setup cannot connect to Wi-Fi or the internet
Joining a Wi-Fi network is not the same as having internet access: the network must allow the Mac to reach the internet. Apple’s Wi-Fi connection guidance recommends checking the connection and network. Try these steps:
- Confirm that the Mac is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and that the network itself has internet access.
- Restart the Mac. Apple notes that this can renew the network address assigned to it.
- Check the Mac’s date and time.
- If possible, try another network or restart the router. If a Recovery or installation error points to a network issue, test another network or use Ethernet where available.
If the MacBook Pro is stuck on startup or shows a black screen
Disconnect accessories first
Unplug USB, USB-C and Thunderbolt devices, then try starting the Mac again. If it starts normally, reconnect one accessory at a time, restarting as needed, to identify whether a peripheral is causing the problem. Apple describes this isolation step in its startup troubleshooting instructions.

Start macOS Recovery on an M3 Max Mac
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” or the Options icon appears.
- Select Options, then Continue.
- If prompted, select the startup volume and an administrator user.
This is the Apple silicon method described in Apple’s macOS Recovery guide. Recovery includes Disk Utility and Reinstall macOS.
Repair the startup disk, then reinstall if needed
If the screen stays blank but Recovery opens, use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk and restart. If the blank screen continues, return to Recovery and reinstall macOS. Apple’s blank-screen guidance says persistent problems may need service.

If a macOS update or installation fails
Work through lower-impact checks before considering an erase or firmware procedure. Apple’s macOS installation guidance recommends checking available storage and internet stability, using Recovery to install macOS when appropriate, and repairing the startup disk with Disk Utility. If an installer you downloaded is reported as damaged or unverifiable, delete it and download it again after disk repair.
Apple says firmware revive or restore is rarely needed for persistent installation issues on Apple silicon or T2 Macs. Treat it as an advanced step and follow Apple’s specific instructions rather than attempting it as a quick fix. Erasing the Mac is also not an initial troubleshooting step.

Restore files from a backup
Migration Assistant can restore data from a Time Machine backup during setup or after you have configured the Mac. If the Mac starts to a flashing question mark, Apple says to reinstall macOS before continuing with backup restoration; follow its backup restoration instructions.
