To keep your Samsung Galaxy display on longer, open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and select a longer interval from the menu. Samsung’s US support guidance lists options up to 10 minutes, but the available choices vary by model and software version, so use the options shown on your phone.
Change the screen timeout setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display, then Screen timeout.
- Choose the longer duration you want from the list.
If the labels differ, search Settings for “Screen timeout.” Samsung notes that menu details and available durations can vary by device and software version; the on-device list is the one you can select. What screen timeout changes—and what it does not
Screen timeout is the wait after inactivity before the display turns off. It does not control brightness dimming, and it is separate from how soon the lock screen goes dark. Samsung Canada notes that the lock screen can turn off sooner than the main display timeout. Samsung Canada support.

Samsung describes Keep screen on while viewing as separate from the fixed timeout: it responds to whether you are looking at the phone. Find it through Settings search if the menu location is not obvious; it may not be available on every model or software version. Samsung US support.

Balance convenience against battery use
A longer screen-on interval consumes more battery because the display remains active longer. Samsung’s guidance is qualitative; it does not give a standardized battery-savings percentage for a specific timeout choice. Samsung Canada recommends one minute or less as a battery-conscious option, not as a requirement. Pick the shortest interval that suits how you use the phone. Samsung Canada support.
If the screen still turns off sooner than expected
- It turns off while you are looking at it: Check whether Keep screen on while viewing is available and enable it for hands-free reading.
- A case or accessory is attached: If the option is present, inspect Settings > Advanced features > Accessories for Auto screen on and off. Samsung says this setting is available only with certain cases or accessories. Samsung Canada support.
- The lock screen goes dark quickly: The main Screen timeout setting may not control the lock screen’s timing; Samsung Canada describes the lock screen as able to turn off sooner. Samsung Canada support.
Can you turn screen timeout off completely?
Samsung’s regional support guidance describes finite timeout choices rather than a “Never” or “None” option. Samsung Japan explicitly says the timeout cannot be set to “none”; exact choices still depend on the individual phone’s menu. Samsung Japan support.
