To set up a new iPhone, connect it to Wi-Fi or cellular, secure it with Face ID or Touch ID and a passcode, then choose whether to transfer data from another phone or start fresh. The right transfer option depends on whether you have an old iPhone, a backup, or an Android phone. Most appearance and notification settings can be changed later, so you do not need to decide everything during setup.
Before you start: choose your transfer route
Have your Apple Account sign-in details ready if you use an account. If you are moving from an old phone, charge it and keep it nearby. For an old iPhone, Apple recommends checking its iOS version and making an iCloud backup when appropriate. Exact screens and available options vary by iPhone model, iOS version, region, and carrier.

Turn on the iPhone and begin setup
- Power on. Hold the power button until the Apple logo appears. Follow the Hello screen prompts.
- Choose language and region. Select the options that fit you; some later screens and features depend on region.
- Use accessibility features if needed. Accessibility Options are available during setup. VoiceOver or Zoom can be enabled from the Hello screen for blind or low-vision users.
- Select a setup method. If you have an eligible nearby Apple device, follow the Quick Start prompts. Otherwise, select Set Up Without Another Device.
- Connect to a network. Join Wi-Fi or use cellular where offered. Activation requires a network connection. The iPhone may prompt you to activate cellular service; whether you can use eSIM or a physical SIM depends on the model and carrier.
Apple’s setup instructions cover the current flow; follow the screens on your own device if labels differ.

Set up a passcode and biometrics
When prompted, configure Face ID or Touch ID if your iPhone supports it, then create a passcode. The standard passcode prompt is six digits, but other passcode options are available. Biometrics make unlocking and authentication convenient; the passcode remains important for situations where biometric authentication is unavailable or requires passcode entry. Apple says Face ID and Touch ID data stays on the device and is not saved elsewhere. See Setup basics.
Transfer data or start fresh
Moving from an iPhone or iPad with Quick Start
On the old device, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, then follow the prompts displayed on both devices. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular, set up security, and choose a transfer method when asked. Keep the devices near each other and connected to power while transferring. Transfer time depends on network conditions and the amount of data; Apple does not give a typical duration in its instructions.

Choosing iCloud download or direct transfer
An iCloud restore lets apps and data download in the background, so you may be able to use the new iPhone sooner. A direct device-to-device transfer must finish before you can use the new phone. Choose based on whether you want to wait for the transfer to complete or begin using the iPhone while content continues downloading. Apple explains the differences in its Quick Start transfer guide.

Choose the matching restore or migration option on the transfer screen and follow its prompts. If you do not want to move anything, select Don’t Transfer Apps & Data. Quick Start cannot transfer from a current device if the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business; this restriction is mainly relevant to school- or company-managed phones.

Sign in and review the remaining prompts
Sign in to your Apple Account, create or recover one, or defer sign-in if that option appears. Setup may also ask about automatic updates, Siri, Screen Time, data sharing, appearance, Apple Intelligence, or safety features. These are choices, not steps every person must enable. Availability differs by model, software version, region, and other requirements, so make decisions based on the explanations shown on your phone.
Check the essentials after reaching the Home Screen
- Confirm connectivity: Check that Wi-Fi or cellular is working. If cellular service is not active, use the carrier instructions or contact the carrier; available activation methods vary.
- Enable Find My: Find the option in Settings and turn it on if you want the device-location and recovery features. Apple describes this and other account basics in Setup basics.
- Choose iCloud syncing: Review which iCloud features you want enabled rather than assuming everything should sync.
Customize the iPhone to suit how you use it
Set the Lock Screen and wallpaper
Choose a photo or built-in design, then adjust the clock, available widgets, and Lock Screen controls. Set a separate Home Screen wallpaper if you prefer. You can link a wallpaper to a Focus so it changes when that Focus is active. Apple’s wallpaper guide describes the available options.

Arrange the Home Screen and add widgets
Organize app icons in an order that makes sense to you, change icon appearance or size where available, and add widgets for information or quick actions. Widgets are useful for items you want to glance at without opening an app. See Apple’s Make your iPhone your own guide.

Add controls you use often, such as Timer or Flashlight. To open Control Center, swipe down from the top-right corner on an iPhone with Face ID, or swipe up from the bottom on an iPhone with a Home button. The available controls and editing interface can vary by software version.

Adjust text, display, and accessibility
Go to Settings > Accessibility to explore options such as text size and voice control. During setup, iPhone also offers a preview of text and icon sizes. You can revisit these settings whenever you want; they are not permanent setup choices.
Choose sounds, haptics, and Focus settings
Adjust ringtones, alerts, and haptics to your preference. Focus modes—including Work, Personal, Sleep, and Do Not Disturb—can silence notifications or allow selected people and apps. You can customize a Focus and, if signed in to the same Apple Account on other Apple devices, sync it across them. Sharing Focus Status can let people know that notifications are silenced. Review app tracking requests
To stop apps from asking permission to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. This controls tracking requests; it is not a guarantee that all tracking or data collection stops.
