Plan the tank, pump, heat-rejection equipment, electrical service, controls, network, containment, and miner warranty as one system. A two-phase vessel is a specialized sealed installation and is not a sensible first home build.
What immersion cooling changes—and what it does not
An air-cooled ASIC turns almost all of its electrical input into heat. Immersion cooling moves that heat into a non-conductive liquid instead of relying on fans and room air. The liquid then carries heat to equipment outside the tank. It can reduce fan noise and make heat recovery easier, but it does not remove the heat or the electrical hazard; it only changes where heat is transferred.

For a house, single-phase immersion is the normal starting point. The fluid stays liquid in an open or closed tank, a pump circulates it through a heat exchanger or outdoor dry cooler, and cooled fluid returns to the miner. A two-phase design boils a low-boiling fluid inside a sealed vessel and condenses the vapor. That requires pressure-rated hardware, specialized refrigerant-like fluids, vapor management, and controls that are poor fits for a first installation.
| Architecture | How heat moves | Home suitability | Main design burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-phase | Liquid is pumped from tank to radiator, dry cooler, or heat exchanger and back. | Best choice for most homes. | Correct flow, fluid compatibility, expansion space, leak containment, and heat-rejection capacity. |
| Two-phase | Fluid boils at the chips or boards; vapor condenses and returns as liquid. | Generally unsuitable for a first home build. | Sealed pressure vessel, low-boiling fluid, condensation control, and specialized service. |
A complete loop normally contains the tank, pump, compatible tubing and seals, isolation valves, drain and fill points, filtration as appropriate, temperature and flow sensors, a heat exchanger or dry cooler, electrical distribution, controls, and Ethernet access. Omitting the heat-rejection side simply turns the tank into a finite thermal reservoir.

1. Fix the miner and warranty boundary before buying hardware
Start with the exact ASIC model, not a generic “Antminer-sized” assumption. Record its model number, board layout, dimensions, PSU type, rated input voltage, power draw, firmware, fan connectors, cable exits, and manufacturer immersion instructions. Two miners in the same family can have different fan-control logic, connector locations, or power requirements.
- Ask the miner manufacturer in writing whether immersion is permitted and whether removing fans, changing firmware, or submerging the PSU affects warranty coverage.
- Confirm whether the PSU remains above the fluid, is separately cooled, or is an immersion-rated component supplied with the system.
- Check the tank opening and lift points against the miner’s weight, cable bend radius, and maintenance clearance.
- Keep the original fans, screws, firmware image, and air-cooling parts so the unit can be returned to its documented configuration if needed.
The Open Compute Project immersion project publishes immersion requirements, material-compatibility work, and warranty guidance useful for engineering discussions. Those documents are references, not approval for every miner-and-fluid pairing. Your warranty terms and the fluid supplier’s compatibility statement control the actual installation.
2. Select a single-phase loop architecture
Open versus closed tank
An open tank is easier to inspect, fill, and service, but it needs a lid or splash control, dust management, and a way to accommodate fluid expansion. A closed tank reduces exposure to airborne contamination and can simplify containment, yet it still needs a vent or expansion strategy unless it is specifically designed as a sealed system. Do not improvise a pressure vessel from a storage bin.

Heat-rejection paths
- Outdoor dry cooler: A fan-assisted coil rejects heat to outdoor air. It is the usual choice when you want no heat inside the house.
- Indoor radiator or fan coil: This deliberately releases heat into a room. It can be useful in winter but becomes a cooling problem in warm weather.
- Liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger: A plate or shell-and-tube exchanger keeps dielectric fluid separate from domestic water or a hydronic loop. Use a component rated for the temperatures, pressure, and fluid chemistry.
- Hybrid loop: A heat exchanger can serve a heating load while a dry cooler handles excess heat when the house or water tank is already warm.
Keep domestic water physically separated from dielectric fluid. A properly rated heat exchanger, isolation valves, expansion control, and backflow protection are required; never circulate mining fluid through potable-water plumbing.
Prevent thermal stratification
Stagnant fluid can leave hot layers around the ASIC while a tank sensor reports a cooler average. The home guide from D-Central recommends circulating the tank volume at least two to three times per hour and gives 10–20 L/min (2.5–5 GPM) as a guide-specific single-miner flow range. Treat that range as a starting point, then verify the actual pump curve, hose diameter, pressure drop, and miner manufacturer limits.

3. Choose an approved dielectric fluid and compatible materials
Use a fluid with an explicit ASIC-immersion compatibility statement. Engineered Fluids’ BitCool BC-888 technical data sheet describes it as “Single-phase, Liquid Immersion Cooling for ASIC-based currency mining.” The sheet states that it can be used in open or closed tanks and in single-loop or dual-loop heat-exchanger systems.
The same manufacturer lists an operating range of 5–100 °C and a flash point above 130 °C. Those are manufacturer specifications for the product, not a guarantee that every tank, seal, board, pump, or installation is safe at those limits. Design normal operating temperatures with margin below the published maximum and follow the fluid supplier’s handling instructions.
Compatibility checklist
- Obtain the supplier’s compatibility chart for pump seals, gaskets, O-rings, tubing, cable jackets, adhesives, coatings, and tank plastics or metals.
- Check the miner’s board materials, conformal coatings, connectors, thermal pads, and any residual manufacturing oils.
- Verify that the pump is rated for the fluid’s viscosity at your operating temperature and that its motor is suitable for continuous duty.
- Use one approved fluid. Do not mix products, dilute with water, or top up with an unverified substitute.
- Provide spill containment sized for the full tank volume plus plumbing. Follow the fluid’s storage, ventilation, fire, and disposal requirements.
“Oil” is an imprecise term. Automotive oil, cooking oil, mineral oil, and random transformer oil do not become safe ASIC coolants merely because they do not conduct electricity. A product intended for electronics immersion is the defensible choice.
4. Size the tank, pump, and heat rejection together
Tank sizing
Measure the miner with its cables, fan simulators, brackets, and service clearance. Leave room for fluid expansion, a pump pickup that cannot run dry, and access to lift the miner out without dragging boards across the tank. A lid should limit dust and splashing while allowing inspection and safe cable routing. Put the tank on a load-rated, level surface with a secondary containment tray.
Pump and piping
Select a continuous-duty pump using the fluid’s viscosity and the loop’s calculated head loss, not only a free-flow number. Include an isolation valve on each side of the pump, a drain at the low point, a fill point, a high-point air purge, and unions so the pump can be serviced. Use tubing and clamps rated for the fluid and temperature. A transparent section can help reveal bubbles, but do not use a material that the fluid supplier has not approved.

Heat-rejection capacity
Size the radiator, dry cooler, or heat exchanger for the miner’s nearly continuous electrical heat output at your outdoor design temperature, plus pump heat and a safety margin. An ASIC drawing 3 kW does not become a 3 kW heating appliance only when convenient; almost all of that input eventually appears as heat. A dry cooler that works on a cool night can be undersized during a hot afternoon.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For an example of packaged layout, the Exergy Fog C2 setup guide routes tank OUT to dry-cooler IN and dry-cooler OUT back to tank IN. It specifies that the dry cooler should be shaded and have at least 0.6 m (2 ft) of rear airflow clearance. Keep coil faces clear of walls, leaves, snow, and recirculating exhaust air.
Instrumentation and containment
- Temperature sensors at tank, loop supply, and loop return.
- Flow switch or flow meter that can shut down the miner or pump on loss of circulation.
- Tank-level sensor or a clearly visible level mark.
- Leak detector beneath the tank and at vulnerable fittings.
- Controller alarms for high temperature, low flow, low level, and pump failure.
- Drain and recovery containers rated for the fluid.
5. Prepare electrical, network, and room services
Electrical work is site-specific. Have a licensed electrician verify conductor sizing, breaker ratings, grounding, disconnect location, local code, and whether GFCI protection is required for the equipment and location. Keep fluid plumbing away from energized connections and provide a visible emergency disconnect.
| Published example | Requirement or specification | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Hashrate House immersion heater | Dedicated 30 A, 240 V hardwired circuit. | This is the requirement listed for that system’s heater, not a universal home-miner rule. |
| Complete HashTub installation | 60 A, 240 V GFCI spa circuit and a visible disconnect. | Follow the system manual and local electrical code; a different tank may need a different service. |
| Exergy Fog C2 equipment | 200–240 V, 50/60 Hz inputs; a PDU is recommended. | Confirm the exact PSU and regional connector before energizing. |
Use the miner’s measured input current and the pump, fans, heater, controls, and networking loads to size the service. Do not share a high-load continuous miner circuit with household receptacles merely because the receptacle voltage matches. Continuous operation, ambient temperature, conductor length, and local code affect the final design.
Network setup
Run Ethernet to the miner or the system’s network switch. Reserve an address or document the DHCP lease, then verify that the management interface is reachable from a trusted local network. Configure the mining pool, worker name, time source, firmware access controls, and alert destination before commissioning. Do not expose the miner’s management interface directly to the public internet.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Assemble the system: an exact commissioning sequence
- Stage the equipment. Place the tank, dry cooler or heat exchanger, pump, controls, PDU, and containment in their final positions. Confirm service clearance and that the dry cooler has the manufacturer’s required airflow.
- Inspect the miner. Photograph cable routes and board orientation. Remove or manage fans only as the system manual directs. Keep the PSU and control electronics in their specified positions.
- Install the loop. Connect tank OUT to pump and heat-rejection IN, then heat-rejection OUT back to tank IN. Fit isolation valves, unions, drain, fill, high-point purge, temperature sensors, flow sensor, and leak detector. Verify that hoses cannot kink when the lid is installed.
- Prepare cable pass-throughs. Use the supplied glands or sealed pass-throughs. In the Fog C2 procedure, fan simulators plug into the miner’s fan headers and cables pass through sealed openings; use the equivalent parts specified for your system.
- Fill with the approved fluid. Confirm the product label, batch, and cleanliness. Add fluid slowly with the pump off unless the manual specifies another method. Leave the required expansion space.
- Purge trapped air. Run the pump according to the manual, open the purge point, and watch the level. Refill with the same approved fluid as bubbles leave the loop. Inspect every joint, clamp, valve, and pass-through for seepage.
- Test controls before miner power. Confirm pump rotation and flow, sensor readings, alarm thresholds, leak detection, dry-cooler fans, and network connectivity. Simulate a low-flow or high-temperature alarm if the controller supports it.
- Energize in the safe order. Hashrate House states: “Fill with the supplied fluid and purge before the miner breaker is ever switched on.” Follow that principle: establish fluid level and circulation first, then energize controls and the miner breaker only after all interlocks and readings are normal.
- Start at stock settings. Let the miner reach steady load while recording tank, inlet, outlet, flow, and board temperatures. Do not overclock during initial commissioning.
- Verify pool operation. Confirm accepted shares, stable hashrate, normal hardware-error rate, and working alarms. Save a baseline record of temperatures, power, fan-simulator status, and firmware.
7. Commissioning checks and operating limits
First-hour checks
- Walk the entire loop for leaks after the fluid warms and expands.
- Compare supply and return temperatures; a sudden collapse in temperature difference can indicate bypass flow, a sensor problem, or insufficient heat transfer.
- Listen for pump cavitation, rattling, or changing pitch that suggests air or a restricted inlet.
- Check that dry-cooler fans ramp as expected and that hot exhaust air is not being pulled back through the coil.
- Confirm that the miner’s telemetry agrees reasonably with external sensors.
Do not treat a low noise reading as a performance guarantee
Immersion can remove the high-speed ASIC fans from the room, but pumps, dry-cooler fans, electrical equipment, and building transmission still make noise. Room construction, measurement distance, fan speed, and operating load matter. Vendor noise figures should be read as conditions attached to that product, not as a promise for every installation.
Overclocking is a separate engineering decision
After a stable stock baseline, evaluate any frequency or voltage change against board temperatures, fluid temperature, power limits, error rate, pool hashrate, and warranty terms. The “up to 40% overclock capability” listed for some packaged systems is a vendor specification, not independent evidence that every miner will achieve it safely or profitably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Heat reuse: useful, but optional
A heat exchanger can transfer mining heat to a hydronic loop without mixing fluids. Documented destinations include domestic hot water, radiant floors, a furnace coil, a buffer tank, or a hot tub. The Hashrate House immersion documentation describes these applications and also lists model-specific electrical requirements.
Domestic hot water
Use a rated heat exchanger and a storage tank with proper temperature control, mixing valve, expansion tank, isolation, and backflow protection. Mining output is continuous, while household demand is intermittent; a buffer tank prevents short cycling and gives the dry cooler somewhere to send excess heat.
Radiant floor or furnace coil
Match the heat exchanger and circulation pump to the hydronic system’s pressure and temperature. Include a bypass or alternate heat-rejection path for warm weather, vacations, and periods when the house needs no heat.

Hot tub
A hot tub is a large, damp electrical environment. Use the manufacturer’s specified GFCI protection, bonding, disconnect, plumbing materials, and heat exchanger. Never put dielectric fluid directly into a spa or connect it to the spa water circuit without physical separation.
Heat reuse improves utilization of energy that would otherwise be rejected, but it does not make the miner free to run. Electricity cost, pool fees, hardware depreciation, fluid, maintenance, taxes, and downtime still determine economics.
9. Routine maintenance and failure recovery
Weekly or per-shift observations
- Record fluid level, tank and loop temperatures, flow, miner telemetry, and ambient temperature.
- Look for haze, discoloration, particles, foam, or an unusual odor.
- Inspect fittings, hose bends, cable glands, and the containment area.
- Check pump noise and dry-cooler fan operation.
Monthly or seasonal tasks
- Clean dust and vegetation from the dry cooler and verify its airflow clearance.
- Inspect clamps, seals, tubing, and valve stems for swelling, brittleness, or weeping.
- Test alarms, leak detection, emergency disconnects, and backup power for controls if installed.
- Follow the fluid supplier’s filtration, sampling, and replacement schedule. Do not add water or a different fluid to correct a level or viscosity problem.
- Before freezing weather, verify outdoor piping protection and the fluid’s low-temperature behavior; before hot weather, confirm dry-cooler capacity at the expected ambient temperature.
Symptom-to-action guide
| Symptom | Likely causes | Immediate action |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid temperature rise | Pump stopped, low level, blocked line, closed valve, dry-cooler fan failure, or undersized heat rejection. | Stop miner power through the normal shutdown path, keep the loop safe, check level and valves, and do not restart until flow and heat rejection are proven. |
| Bubbles, foaming, or cavitation | Air trapped after filling, pump suction leak, low level, or fluid incompatibility. | Reduce load, inspect suction fittings, purge at the high point, and consult the fluid supplier if foaming persists. |
| Leak or falling level | Loose clamp, seal attack, cracked tubing, or thermal expansion spill. | De-energize safely, contain the fluid, isolate the leaking section, and replace the failed material with a verified compatible part. |
| Normal tank temperature but high board temperature | Stratification, blocked flow around the miner, sensor placement error, or board-side fault. | Stop overclocking, verify flow distribution and sensor accuracy, and inspect the miner only after it is isolated and safe to handle. |
| Miner will not start | Fan-simulator fault, PSU interlock, incorrect firmware setting, missing network, or power-protection trip. | Check the system manual, fan headers, PSU status, breaker, and management logs; do not bypass an interlock casually. |
10. Turnkey systems: what the published specifications actually say
Packaged systems can reduce fabrication work, but you still need to verify miner compatibility, service capacity, shipping, warranty, installation labor, and local code. The figures below are vendor or support-page specifications, not independent comparative test results.

Compare packages on eight axes: miner compatibility and warranty, heat-rejection capacity in your climate, electrical service and protection, fluid volume and material compatibility, noise and footprint, maintenance access, heat-reuse value, and total installed cost. If a specification is not published for your exact model or region, obtain it in writing rather than assuming the largest advertised capacity applies.
11. Estimate the real project scope
A meaningful budget includes more than the tank and fluid. List the ASIC and PSU, tank or packaged enclosure, approved fluid, pump, dry cooler or heat exchanger, tubing and compatible seals, valves and sensors, controller, PDU, electrician, plumbing labor, containment, network hardware, shipping, permits, replacement filters, and a contingency for a failed pump or seal. Published pages above do not establish a universal installed price, and local electrical and plumbing work can dominate a small home project.
Separate one-time capital costs from recurring costs: electricity, pool fees, fluid sampling or replacement, pump and fan power, filter media, maintenance labor, and downtime. A heat-reuse loop may reduce a separate heating bill, but only during periods when the building can use the heat and the exchanger operates efficiently.
12. A practical go/no-go checklist
- Miner: Exact model, PSU, firmware, dimensions, power draw, fan-control method, and written immersion/warranty position recorded.
- Fluid: ASIC-immersion product selected; supplier compatibility data covers every wetted material; no mixing or water addition planned.
- Loop: Tank, pump, valves, purge, drain, sensors, containment, and expansion allowance designed as one circuit.
- Heat rejection: Dry cooler, radiator, or exchanger sized for continuous output at local design conditions, with a backup or bypass path where needed.
- Electrical: Licensed review completed; voltage, breaker, conductor, GFCI, grounding, disconnect, PDU, and continuous-load assumptions documented.
- Network: Ethernet, pool credentials, management access controls, time source, and alerts tested.
- Commissioning: Fill, purge, leak check, flow test, alarm test, and baseline recording completed before miner power.
- Operations: Maintenance schedule, spill response, shutdown procedure, replacement fluid, and a safe way to remove the miner are ready.
If any item is unresolved, keep the miner out of the tank. Immersion cooling rewards careful integration; it does not forgive an undersized dry cooler, an incompatible seal, a missing interlock, or a breaker energized before the loop is full and circulating.
