1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can send an FFmpeg stream from an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine to YouTube Live by creating a VM with public internet access, installing an FFmpeg build that supports RTMPS, and using the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. For a 1080p30 H.264 starting profile, YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Test privately and check YouTube’s stream health before going public.
Before you start
This setup is for sending a media stream from an internet-connected Linux VM to YouTube Live. It is not a camera-based broadcast. You need an OCI tenancy, an eligible compute shape, an Ubuntu image, SSH access, media the VM can read, and a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- OCI account and region: Always Free resources apply in the tenancy’s home region, and eligible capacity may not be immediately available.
- Network access: The VM needs outbound access to YouTube’s ingest service. If you intend to administer it directly over SSH, it also needs a public IP and an inbound SSH rule limited to your trusted source address where feasible.
- Encoding capacity: Match resolution, frame rate, and codec to the VM’s actual CPU capacity and stable outbound bandwidth. OCI shape performance for a particular FFmpeg workload is not established here; test the profile you plan to use.
- Credentials: Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. Do not expose it in a public script, terminal recording, or shared log.
Oracle’s Always Free resource documentation lists the current A1 Flex free allowance and notes possible capacity shortages. Its Linux instance tutorial covers creating a VCN, an internet-connected subnet, an instance, and SSH access. Console labels and defaults can change, so use the current OCI console guidance for your tenancy.
Provision an OCI VM with internet access
Choose the region and eligible compute
If you plan to use Always Free resources, choose your tenancy’s home region. Oracle’s current documentation lists the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape and Ubuntu among eligible options. The A1 allowance is the first 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month, equivalent for Always Free tenancies to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. Availability depends on capacity in that region; if creation fails because capacity is unavailable, try again later or review the options Oracle currently makes available to your tenancy.

Always Free is not a guaranteed permanent stream host. Oracle documents possible reclamation of idle instances when, over a seven-day period, CPU utilization at the 95th percentile is below 20%, network utilization is below 20%, and, for A1, memory utilization is below 20%. Whether a particular stream workload meets those conditions depends on its measured metrics.
Configure networking and create the instance
- In the OCI console, create or select a VCN and a subnet with a route to the public internet. Follow Oracle’s current Linux instance tutorial for the VCN, subnet, and gateway workflow.
- When direct SSH administration is needed, assign a public IP and configure SSH ingress. Restrict the source to your trusted public IP or network when feasible instead of allowing SSH from everywhere.
- Select an Ubuntu image and the available eligible compute shape, then provide the SSH public key during instance creation. Keep the matching private key secure on your computer.
- Wait until the instance is running, note its public IP, and confirm that the subnet and security rules permit the traffic this setup needs. Do not open inbound ports for YouTube ingest; the VM sends the stream outbound.
Connect to Ubuntu and install FFmpeg
Connect using the private key paired with the key you supplied during instance creation. The exact SSH username depends on the chosen image; use the image’s current Oracle instructions rather than guessing it. Once connected, install FFmpeg using the current package instructions for that Ubuntu release.

Before configuring a stream, check the installed FFmpeg build and confirm that it supports the protocol and codecs you intend to use. Package versions and build options vary by Ubuntu release and repository. In particular, do not assume RTMPS support merely because an ffmpeg command is installed: verify the build against the current FFmpeg documentation and the package information for your system.
This guide does not provide a copy-and-run FFmpeg command: exact option syntax and interactions depend on the input, FFmpeg build, and RTMPS destination details, and have not been verified for a specific setup. Consult the official FFmpeg documentation for your installed version before executing a command.

Get YouTube’s RTMPS destination and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube says the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default; select the RTMPS destination when available instead of substituting a guessed ingest host.
- Provide the destination and key to FFmpeg using the method supported by your command and build. Keep the key out of published scripts and logs.
- If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before resuming the stream.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” on its Manage live stream settings page. Its RTMPS instructions explain that RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommend using the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room.
Choose an encoder profile YouTube can receive
YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends CBR, a keyframe interval of two seconds and no more than four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use the codec and bitrate guidance that corresponds to the codec you actually encode.

|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds |
These are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that a given OCI VM can encode the profile or sustain its network path. YouTube also publishes AV1 and H.265 guidance; consult its current table if you choose either codec instead of H.264.
Audio and keyframes
For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. Its advanced guidance lists 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where possible; YouTube recommends no more than four seconds. Check the actual output and YouTube’s health feedback, not only the configured values.

Start with a controlled test, then go live
- Configure FFmpeg to read the intended media and send it to the RTMPS URL with the stream key, using a profile supported by both the FFmpeg build and the VM.
- Start a private or otherwise controlled test stream before announcing a public broadcast.
- Wait for YouTube’s preview, then confirm that the picture, motion, and audio match the source and that YouTube reports healthy stream status.
- Test with media that has movement and sound similar to the material you expect to broadcast; a static or silent test may not expose problems that occur with real content.
- Only after the preview and health checks look right, change the stream’s visibility or proceed with the planned public broadcast in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and sound and reviewing its stream-health messages. A successful FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OCI will not create the chosen Always Free instance | Home-region capacity or eligibility | Confirm the tenancy’s home region and current eligibility. Capacity can be temporarily unavailable; retry later or review the shapes Oracle currently offers. |
| SSH connection times out | Public IP, subnet route, or inbound SSH rule | Confirm the instance has the intended public IP, the subnet has internet routing, and the SSH ingress rule allows your current trusted source address. |
| FFmpeg does not recognize RTMPS or fails before connecting | Installed build or protocol support | Inspect the installed build and verify that it supports the required protocol. Install or build a version with the needed support using current FFmpeg and Ubuntu documentation. |
| RTMPS reports an SSL error | Destination scheme, server, or port | Recheck the RTMPS URL and server copied from Live Control Room. YouTube says to try port 443 if needed; do not replace its destination with a guessed endpoint. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream or the key is rejected | Wrong stream selection, URL, or key | Make sure the URL and key belong to the selected Live Control Room stream and were copied accurately. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Preview is unstable, drops frames, or has poor audio | Encoding load, outbound path, or profile mismatch | Check YouTube’s health messages, lower resolution or frame rate for a test, and compare the configured bitrate with the VM’s measured ability to encode and send steadily. |
| Stream plays but looks or sounds wrong | Input media or encoder settings | Compare YouTube’s preview with the source. Check the selected audio stream, codec compatibility, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio sample rate. |
Understand the cost and reliability trade-offs
Oracle’s Always Free A1 Flex allowance can reduce VM compute charges for an eligible tenancy in its home region, but it does not guarantee immediate capacity or immunity from idle-instance reclamation. A continuous stream is not automatically exempt: Oracle’s documented policy depends on the instance’s measured CPU, network, and (for A1) memory utilization over the stated seven-day window. Check current Oracle terms and your billing view before relying on a free VM for a persistent broadcast.
A VPS gives you control over the Linux environment and FFmpeg workflow, but you are responsible for the VM, network path, process supervision, and diagnosing interruptions. There is no established benchmark here showing which OCI shape can sustain a particular resolution or frame rate; validate your own setup with a controlled test.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than operate an FFmpeg VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service built for that workflow: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
