Keep your YouTube stream key private, enter it only in OBS’s stream settings, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed. The key is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to your channel; it does not make a stream reliable by itself. This guide explains how to set it up and handle it safely for a continuous music stream.
What a YouTube stream key does
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key identifies which encoder may send a feed; the server URL is a separate setting that tells the encoder where to send it. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream using it. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Set up the key in YouTube Studio and OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Create a custom stream key if you need a reusable key, or select the intended existing key. YouTube’s interface can change; confirm the labels in your account. - Enter the separate encoder values in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if that option is available in your setup, then enter the YouTube server URL in the server field and the key in Stream Key. If OBS offers an account connection rather than manual key entry, follow the workflow you intend to use and verify which key is active in Live Control Room.
- Keep the key out of view. Do not include it in screenshots, public chat, tutorials, shared documents, scenes, or overlays. Avoid sharing OBS configuration with people who do not need access. These are prudent precautions because the key functions as a credential; YouTube does not provide a detailed OBS-specific secret-storage checklist.
- Test before relying on continuous playback. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm that audio and video are correct and that your planned backup-encoder failover works. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder, previewing, testing failover, and monitoring audio and video. Protect access to the channel and OBS setup
Limit channel permissions to people you trust. YouTube’s guidance says, “Admin access for your channel should only be given to who you trust.” Owners and managers can reset a stream key; editors and viewers cannot. Apply the same least-access principle to any device or configuration where OBS is available, since someone with access to the encoder setup may be able to use its key. If you reuse prior stream settings in YouTube, check the selected key before starting: reusing settings also carries forward the previous key. This can be useful for a recurring stream, but it can also leave OBS pointed at a key other than the one you intended. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Reset a key if it may have been exposed
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the Stream tab.
- Reset the affected key, then copy the newly generated value.
- Replace the old value in OBS’s Settings > Stream key field.
- Reconnect the encoder and confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed with the replacement key.
Resetting is the documented recovery step if a key is compromised. Do not assume deleting a screenshot or message is enough once another person may have seen the value. YouTube’s documented permissions allow owners and managers to reset keys, not editors or viewers. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
What the key cannot guarantee for a 24/7 stream
A valid key permits an encoder to send a feed; it does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting, automatic recovery, or continuous archive availability. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends preparation, previewing, testing backup-encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video. It does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 availability. The same instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer continuous stream will be archived in the same way. YouTube’s stated limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; YouTube’s page gave no year for these limits when consulted on October 3, 2026. Check the current help page before planning multiple concurrent feeds. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Music rights still apply
Keeping the key private does not establish that music is authorized for a livestream. The YouTube encoder and key guidance does not determine the copyright status of music in a broadcast. Confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for the specific recordings and use before streaming.
