To automate a live feed, schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or cloud playout service to send and sequence the video. If you only need a regular video to become public at a set time, schedule its publication instead.
First, choose what you need to schedule
There are three separate controls that are easy to mix up:

- Live broadcast time: when the YouTube event is scheduled to start. YouTube Studio manages the event page and audience reminders.
- Video publish time: when an uploaded video changes from scheduled/private to public. This is not a live broadcast.
- Media playout: which prerecorded item the audience sees next, and when. An encoder or streaming service must generate and send this feed.
A YouTube broadcast and its incoming video feed are distinct resources: Google describes the event as a liveBroadcast and the feed settings as a liveStream, which must be bound together. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

For several scheduled live shows
Use YouTube Studio to create or reuse a scheduled event, then send the show through a software or hardware encoder. If the events use the same transmission setup, the same stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. For concurrent shows or different transmission settings, separate stream resources may be needed.

For a continuous feed of prerecorded videos
Choose an encoder or cloud playout service that explicitly supports continuous or scheduled prerecorded media. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists options including Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streams, Upstream for browser-based 24/7 streaming, and AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. These directory descriptions are vendor claims, not independent performance comparisons; check each provider’s current compatibility, rights requirements, operating limits, and terms.
For ordinary scheduled videos
If viewers do not need a live event, upload the video and schedule its publication in YouTube Studio. YouTube says a scheduled upload is private until it becomes public at the selected time. A regular YouTube playlist or scheduled upload does not send a live feed.

Set up a scheduled live event with an encoder
- Confirm live access. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check that the channel can go live and address any account restrictions before the planned start.
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live, open Manage in Live Control Room, then choose Schedule stream. Create a new broadcast or reuse settings from a previous one. Enter the title, scheduled time, privacy, and other event details. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, be shared, and offer viewers a reminder.
- Connect the encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its connection prompts. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server/RTMP field and paste the stream key into its key field. Treat the key like a password; reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
- Prepare the program. For a presenter-led show, configure your live sources and start the encoder at the event time. For prerecorded playlist-style output, create the sequence in a product that supports that specific playout workflow. A normal YouTube playlist does not feed the encoder automatically.
- Start and verify the event. Start sending video from the encoder and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room. Select Go live unless auto-start is enabled for the broadcast. Monitor the public watch page and end the Studio event and encoder feed when appropriate.
- Check the archive. YouTube Help says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. After the event, check the channel’s Live tab and confirm the watch page has the intended visibility.

What auto-start and auto-stop do—and do not do
Auto-start can start a broadcast when video begins arriving on its bound stream. Auto-stop can end the broadcast about one minute after the channel stops sending video. These are event-lifecycle controls: they do not create a playlist, choose the next prerecorded item, or schedule media playout. The encoder or service must keep the intended feed running. Automate many events with the YouTube API
The YouTube Live Streaming API is suited to building a schedule manager or automating many broadcasts. An application needs registration and channel authorization. At a high level, create a liveBroadcast with its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status; create or reuse a liveStream with transmission settings such as ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate; bind the broadcast to the stream; then transition the broadcast to testing or live as appropriate.
Google’s API guide explains that recurring broadcasts at different times can share a stream, while multiple channels need different streams. API automation manages YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle; it still needs an encoder or service to deliver the actual video feed.

Rights, monetization, and other checks
- Use content you have rights to stream. This matters especially for continuous music and prerecorded programming. YouTube’s playlist and live-stream guidance describes restrictions on content and features; review the relevant playlist help and live-stream guidance.
- Do not assume scheduling enables ads. YouTube says a channel must be eligible to monetize videos to enable automated ads on a broadcast. Scheduling alone does not promise monetization or revenue; see YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
- Check the event’s visibility. Confirm its privacy setting and the public watch page before sharing the event link.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
- No live access at the planned time: enable live streaming ahead of time; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, and account restrictions can also prevent a broadcast.
- The event exists but has no preview: confirm that the encoder is running, the YouTube stream URL and key are correct, and the encoder is sending to the stream bound to that event.
- The broadcast starts but the playlist does not advance: the event’s schedule and auto-start settings do not manage media order. Set up sequence and repeat behavior in an encoder or playout service that supports prerecorded programming.
- A stream key may be compromised: reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder or service with the replacement.
- The broadcast remains open after the program ends: end the event in Studio or configure auto-stop; auto-stop responds to the feed ending and does not stop or select individual playlist items.
- A repeat event uses the wrong feed settings: check that the broadcast is bound to the intended stream. Reuse a stream for sequential events only when the transmission setup matches; use separate stream resources for concurrent or differently configured feeds.
