You can stream to YouTube from an Ubuntu VPS by running an encoder or relay on the server, then sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. First decide whether the VPS must encode or resize video, or only forward an already-encoded feed: encoding demands substantially more compute, while relaying is a different workload. A Contabo India-region VPS is one possible host, but its location or advertised specifications alone do not guarantee a stable route, sustained bitrate, or successful encode.
Choose what the VPS will do
An Ubuntu VPS can participate in a YouTube stream in two distinct ways. Plan around the job rather than assuming that any VPS can handle any stream.

Encode or transcode on the VPS
The server takes source media and encodes it, or changes its resolution, frame rate, or codec before sending it to YouTube. This is CPU-intensive; the required capacity depends on the source, encoding settings, and whether the stream is live or pre-recorded. Contabo identifies video encoding and transcoding as Cloud VDS workloads, but that does not mean every stream requires a VDS or establish that a particular plan will sustain a given output. Relay an already-encoded feed
If another device or service has already encoded the video, the VPS may only need to forward that feed to YouTube. This is a different compute workload from transcoding; it still depends on a reliable network path and enough port capacity for the outgoing bitrate. No tested Ubuntu relay command or configuration is documented, so do not treat an unverified recipe as a known-good setup.

Select an India-region server carefully
Contabo lists Cloud VPS plans in India. One displayed Cloud VPS 6 listing has 6 vCPU cores, 12 GB RAM, and 200 GB SSD; listings, availability, and prices can change, so check the current product page and order flow before buying. Ubuntu Server is available as an image in Contabo’s managed VPS ordering flow. A base operating-system requirement is not a sizing guide for an encoder: choose based on the actual workload and validate performance with a representative test. Contabo VPS ordering
Choose Mumbai if it makes sense for the source and network route, not simply because the intended audience is in India. The India location does not by itself guarantee low latency or a stable route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Contabo says server port speeds vary by product, from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, and that VPS, VDS, and dedicated servers have no default bandwidth limit, subject to its fair-use policy, which allows intervention for exceptionally high or disruptive use. Get YouTube’s RTMPS address and stream key

Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s stream setup instructions are at YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.

In the stream settings, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use those exact values in the encoder or relay configuration; do not substitute a guessed ingest address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

Keep the key private: treat it like a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Set output to match the source and connection
Use settings appropriate to the actual source and test the path from the encoder to YouTube. For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 recommends the following example bitrates. - Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: match the source and choose only what the encoder and real upload path can sustain. Avoid upscaling or selecting a higher frame rate without a reason.
- Audio: configure the encoder’s audio input and verify the result during testing; a video-only feed may be technically connected but still fail the viewing purpose.
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and a VPS’s measured capabilities are separate questions. No specific Contabo-to-YouTube sustained-upload benchmark or tested command recipe for a particular Ubuntu workload is established.

Bring the stream up and verify it before relying on it

Install and configure the encoder or relay suited to your workload on the Ubuntu server. The precise application and commands depend on whether it is encoding source files, capturing a live input, or forwarding an encoded feed; no one command applies safely to all three.

Enter YouTube’s copied RTMPS server URL and stream key in the software’s streaming destination settings.

Set the output codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval. Keep the target within the chosen plan’s port capacity and the tested connection’s sustained upload capacity.

Start a test stream using representative motion and audio. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and watch the resulting stream before a scheduled broadcast. Monitor both the encoder and YouTube stream health while live. If you change the source, encoding settings, server, or route, test again rather than assuming the previous result still applies.
Check YouTube’s rights and live-stream rules
Having a VPS and a valid stream key does not grant rights to the content. Before broadcasting, confirm that you own or have permission to use the video, music, and other material in the feed. YouTube may detect copyrighted material in live streams; a stream can be interrupted or terminated if it violates its policies. Review the current copyright safety checklist before using recordings, background music, or third-party clips.
For recurring or pre-recorded programming, technical availability is not the same as monetization eligibility. YouTube’s policies and review decisions determine whether a channel’s content qualifies; avoid assuming that looping or lightly altered third-party material is acceptable. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Consider the operating cost and workload trade-off
A VPS is not just a monthly server line item if the goal is an always-on channel. Consider the selected server charge, any required storage or bandwidth terms, setup and monitoring time, and the cost of a more capable machine if it must encode continuously. Contabo’s statement that there is no default bandwidth limit is qualified by its fair-use policy, while port speed depends on the product; check the current terms and plan before estimating cost.
