Choose self-hosting or managed hosting first
Your operating model determines how much of the setup you must maintain. Self-hosting provides direct access to files, launch parameters, logs and operating-system settings. A managed host supplies a prepared machine and support, but you work within its panel, file permissions and restart process.

For a small private group, either model works. Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable with Windows or Linux administration and need unrestricted access. Choose managed hosting when predictable administration time matters more than control. In both cases, you remain responsible for selecting a compatible mission and keeping clients synchronized.
Plan the server before installing anything
Pick one mission or community pack
“Star Wars server” is not one official package. It can mean a particular Workshop mission, a total-conversion collection, or a community campaign with its own required addons. Select the mission first. Open its Workshop page and record every required mod, dependency, supported version and dedicated-server instruction. Do not assume that two Star Wars packs can be combined simply because they use similar names or assets.

Reserve a separate server machine or virtual machine
Bohemia Interactive recommends keeping SteamCMD, the dedicated-server files and the normal game client in separate locations. A simple layout is:

C:arma3-servermodsOn Linux, use equivalent separate directories owned by a non-root service account. Separating the folders prevents a client update, Workshop cache or local profile from overwriting files used by the dedicated server.

- Use a dedicated Windows account or a non-root Linux account for the server process.
- Give that account read/write access to the server directory, profile directory and mod directory.
- Back up
server.cfg, the profile directory, startup scripts and the list of mod names before updates. - Keep a written copy of the chosen mission’s dependency list and the date on which you last tested it.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Steam Support states that standalone Steam game servers use SteamCMD to download and update their files. Install SteamCMD in its own directory, then install Arma 3 into the separate server directory.
Windows installation
- Download and extract SteamCMD to a directory such as
C:steamcmd. - Open Command Prompt and change to that directory.
- Run SteamCMD with a separate installation path for the server:
steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:arma3-server +login anonymous +app_update 233780 validate +quitThe validate option checks downloaded files. Run the same app_update command later when you deliberately update the server, rather than updating during an active event.

Linux installation
- Create a non-root account for the service and give it ownership of the SteamCMD and server directories.
- Install SteamCMD using the distribution method documented for your Linux distribution.
- Run SteamCMD with the server directory as its force-install path:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /srv/arma3-server +login anonymous +app_update 233780 validate +quitLinux profile and path behavior differs from Windows. Use absolute paths in scripts, confirm that the service account can write the profile directory, and check the generated log location after the first start.
Do not mix client and server files
Do not point the dedicated server at your desktop Arma 3 installation. The client has its own addons, Workshop cache and profile data. Mixing them makes it harder to identify whether a missing file belongs to the server, a client-only mod or a stale download.

Create the server profile and server.cfg
The profile stores difficulty and related server settings. server.cfg defines the public identity and access behavior. Pass the configuration file with -config and the profile directory with -profiles when launching.

difficulty = "Regular";Adjust every value for your group. Use a strong administrator password and do not publish it in a public post. A session password is optional for a public server but useful while you are testing mods. The exact difficulty name and available parameters depend on the Arma 3 version and profile settings; keep the file’s syntax precise, including semicolons and quotation marks.

Launch with the profile and config
A basic Windows batch file can look like this:

pauseOn Linux, the equivalent command uses the Linux executable and quoted parameters where the shell would otherwise interpret separators:

If a package supplies a startup script, read it before adapting it; some collections require additional server-only parameters or a particular mission selection.
Open the Arma 3 network ports
The documented default instance uses a consecutive UDP block. Forward the block from your router to the server’s fixed local IP address, and allow the same ports through the host firewall.

- Assign the host a DHCP reservation or static local address so the forwarding rule does not change.
- Create UDP firewall and router rules for ports 2302 through 2306 to that address.
- Set another game port with
-portonly when you need to avoid a conflict. - For multiple instances, give each instance its own separated port block and its own profile, config and startup command.
- Restart the server and test from outside your home network; a test from the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT and do not provide a routable public address. In that case, ordinary port forwarding cannot make a home server reachable; use a managed host or a network service that provides an externally reachable address.

Install the Star Wars mods and mission
Arma 3 Workshop content is free additional content, and Bohemia Interactive reported more than 140,000 mods in 2024. That quantity makes dependency discipline essential: a large collection can include optional files, client-only components, server keys and scripts that are not interchangeable.
Build a dependency manifest
- Open the selected mission or community pack’s Workshop page.
- Copy its required items into a manifest, including core frameworks, assets, factions, maps, sounds and compatibility patches.
- Record the exact Workshop names and the folder names that appear after download. The launch parameter uses folder names, not the display title alone.
- Read the pack’s installation notes for keys, server-only files, load order, required mission parameters and supported Arma 3 version.
Download to the server
Download every required item to the dedicated server’s mod directory using the method supported by your operating model. A managed panel may offer a Workshop-ID importer; a self-hosted administrator may use SteamCMD’s Workshop tooling or copy a verified mod directory from a staging machine. Do not copy only the visible PBO files if the package also supplies a keys directory, bikey files, configuration or script files.
Preserve the directory names expected by the collection. Renaming a folder can make the launch line look tidy but can break dependencies, key paths or update tools. Keep a clean staging copy so you can test a new version without deleting the currently working one.
Load the same collection
Joiners must use the same required mod names, versions and dependencies as the server. Put the full set in the launch parameter, for example:
-mod="@CoreFramework;@StarWarsAssets;@ChosenMap;@MissionDependencies"The order supplied by the mission author takes priority over a generic alphabetical order. If the pack specifies server-only content, follow its instructions rather than loading client-only files on the server. Never promise compatibility between two packs without checking both dependency lists and their update notes.

Publish the exact Workshop collection, version notes and launch order to players. Tell them to remove obsolete versions before joining. If the mission author changes the required collection, update the server and announce the new collection before the next session. A player who has a similarly named but older mod can still receive a signature or missing-addon error.

- Stop any old Arma 3 server process.
- Run the startup script with the profile, config, port and complete mod parameter.
- Watch the console for a clean startup and note the profile and log paths.
- Search for the server in the Arma 3 browser using its hostname, or connect directly using the public address and game port.
- Join from a test client that has the identical mod collection and versions.
- Select the intended mission and verify that its map, factions, units and scripted features load.
- Open the server log and check for missing addons, duplicate files, signature failures, BattlEye errors and script exceptions.
- Test a second client from outside the host’s local network before announcing the event.
Do not treat a visible server in the browser as proof that the mission is ready. Browser registration can work while a firewall blocks the game port, and a client can reach the lobby while a missing dependency prevents the mission from loading.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
The server does not appear in the browser
- Confirm the process is running and listening on the port specified by
-port. - Allow UDP 2302–2306 in the host firewall and forward them to the correct local address.
- Check whether the router has a public IPv4 address rather than carrier-grade NAT.
- Verify that another Arma instance is not already using the same port block.
“Missing addons” or a mission that will not load
- Compare the server’s mod folders with the mission’s current dependency list.
- Check spelling and capitalization of folder names in
-mod. - Download the required map, framework and compatibility items, not only the headline Star Wars pack.
- Remove stale duplicate versions and retest with a clean client profile.
Signature or BattlEye errors
- Make sure the server has the key files supplied by the mod author in the expected
keysdirectory. - Ensure every client uses the same signed release as the server.
- Do not disable signature verification as a shortcut for an unknown or mismatched package; identify the file and version that differs.
- Check BattlEye status and its log when a player is rejected after reaching the lobby.
Linux starts and then exits
- Run under the non-root service account and verify ownership of the profile and log directories.
- Use absolute paths and confirm that the executable has permission to run.
- Inspect the generated log for a missing library, malformed config line or inaccessible mod directory.
Players experience lag or mission failures
First separate network reachability from simulation load. If the lobby is stable but the mission degrades after spawning AI or scripts, test the mission with optional mods removed, review its performance guidance and reduce unnecessary scripted systems. If players disconnect before the mission begins, investigate port forwarding, firewall state and public-address changes instead.
Maintain the server between sessions
Use a change window
Stop the server, back up the config and profile, update Arma 3 with SteamCMD, then update one mod or collection at a time. Start the server privately and join with a test client before opening it to the group. Keep the previous working mod directories until the new set has passed a mission load and multiplayer test.

Track versions and load order
Maintain a plain-text manifest containing the mission name, Workshop collection, mod folder names, last tested date, launch parameters and any required keys. This turns a future “it worked last week” incident into a comparison between two known states.
Secure administration
- Use a strong, private
passwordAdmin. - Use a session password while testing or during closed events.
- Limit operating-system access to administrators who need it.
- Keep SteamCMD and the server software updated during scheduled maintenance rather than immediately before a public event.
- Back up configuration and profiles, but do not distribute administrator credentials with the player collection.
Which hosting model fits your Star Wars group?

Managed hosting removes infrastructure chores but does not remove mod compatibility work. Self-hosting gives maximum control but makes you the network administrator, update manager and first-line support desk. Decide according to the work you are prepared to perform every time the mission or collection changes.
