These categories overlap and are not governed by one universal industry standard. A shrinking play area, respawns, missions, persistent loot, or an extraction objective can appear outside the category most associated with it. The reliable way to classify a game is to identify its overall success condition, what happens when you leave, and what your equipment or loot means after the match.

FPS is the viewpoint; the other labels describe the game loop
First-person shooter (FPS) means that you normally see the world through the character’s eyes while using firearms or other ranged weapons. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a match is a battle royale, an extraction shooter, an arena shooter, or something else. Those labels describe how a session is organized: what players are trying to accomplish, how the map controls encounters, and what is at stake when someone is eliminated.

- Arena shooter: Can I win this bounded fight or objective against the opposing side?
A game may use the FPS viewpoint while borrowing one or more of these structures. The labels are shorthand, not mutually exclusive legal categories.
What defines a battle royale?
The win condition is being the last survivor
Battle royale is fundamentally an elimination contest. Players enter a shared map, prepare by scavenging or otherwise acquiring equipment, and compete until one player or team remains. Epic’s Fortnite documentation defines the mode as combining “survival, exploration, and scavenging elements into a last-person-standing game,” with solo play or small squads of two to four players. Epic’s Fortnite documentation provides that definition and squad framing.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS gives a concrete implementation: its official overview describes 100 players landing, looting, surviving a shrinking battleground, and attempting to become the lone survivor. The 100-player figure is specific to that game’s current official overview, accessed October 13, 2026; it is not a requirement for every battle royale. PUBG’s official overview is the source for those details.

A shrinking area is common, not mandatory
Many battle royales use a shrinking safe area, sometimes called a zone or circle, to prevent players from avoiding one another indefinitely. As the playable space contracts, squads are pushed toward the same locations and late-match encounters become more likely. This is a common pressure mechanism illustrated by PUBG, but the last-survivor objective is more fundamental than any particular zone system. A game can preserve the battle-royale structure while changing how it concentrates players.

Scavenging prepares you for the contest
Battle-royale maps commonly ask players to search for weapons, armor, ammunition, healing items, or other resources after entering. The scavenging phase creates unequal starting positions and a route from cautious preparation to increasingly frequent fights. It remains a means to the survival contest rather than the match’s ultimate objective: winning means outlasting the remaining opponents.
Elimination and returning to the match
Being knocked out usually removes a player from the immediate contest, but modern battle royales can add conditional ways back in. Electronic Arts’ Battlefield REDSEC – Battle Royale 101 describes respawn options that depend on match timing and surviving squadmates. This shows why “no respawns” is an unreliable definition. The important question is whether the overall match still resolves as an outlasting competition.
What defines an extraction shooter?
Leaving alive is a primary objective
An extraction shooter turns the match into a risk-and-reward run. You enter a session, search for valuable loot or pursue objectives, manage threats from other players and the environment, and then travel to an extraction point. A successful exit is not merely a way to finish the round; it is one of the main things you are trying to achieve.

Loot can matter beyond the current run
Extraction games often make collected items consequential after the encounter. Escaping with loot can preserve it for later use, sale, crafting, or progression, while dying can erase some or all of the run’s gains. The exact inventory rules differ by title, so persistent equipment is a frequent characteristic rather than a universal requirement. What distinguishes the loop is that surviving with value changes your future position.
Risk comes from players, machines, and the route to safety
An extraction route exposes you to several decisions at once: whether to pursue a high-value area, how much noise to make, when to disengage, and which exit to attempt. Player-versus-player firefights may reveal your position, while environmental enemies or hazards can consume health and supplies before another player appears. Reaching the extraction zone does not automatically make the run safe; the exit itself can be a contested point.
Death has a larger possible cost
Compared with a conventional respawning match, extraction games can make death expensive or even permanent for that run. The consequences vary: a title may remove carried loot, damage a long-term economy, or simply reset the current mission. Because the punishment is game-specific, check the particular inventory and recovery rules rather than assuming every extraction shooter uses the same loss model.
Why developers use neighboring names
Genre language continues to evolve. Embark Studios currently describes ARC Raiders as a multiplayer “Extraction Adventure,” emphasizing scavenging and threats from both other Raiders and machines. That wording communicates an extraction-oriented structure without claiming that every game must use the exact phrase “extraction shooter.” Embark’s studio site contains its current descriptions.

What defines an arena shooter?
Combat happens in a bounded space
An arena shooter emphasizes immediate fights or objectives inside a defined arena or compact map. Instead of making a long survival run or a high-stakes trip to an exit the central activity, it puts players into a designed combat space where positioning, aim, movement, team coordination, and objective control decide the result.
The label is less consistently defined than battle royale or extraction shooter. There is no single rulebook that establishes one required player count, respawn system, weapon set, or objective. When describing an arena-style game, explain the actual match rules rather than treating the label as a fixed standard.
Respawns and objectives can vary
An arena match may use repeated respawns, limited lives, rounds, team eliminations, a score limit, or an objective such as capturing a location. These choices change the rhythm and stakes without changing the bounded-space emphasis. A quick-respawn mode encourages repeated engagements; a limited-life mode makes positioning and survival more important.

Embark describes THE FINALS as a “Dynamism Shooter” set in virtual arenas that players can alter, exploit, and destroy. It is a useful example of an arena-space design, not proof that all arena shooters feature destructible environments or use the same terminology. The defining point is that the fight is organized around an arena and its objectives.

The fastest way to tell the categories apart
Use these questions in order when a game appears to combine several labels:
- What counts as success? If the match is won by being the final player or team alive, it points to battle royale. If success requires reaching an exit with loot or mission progress, it points to extraction. If the goal is to win a bounded fight, round, score race, or arena objective, it points to an arena-style match.
- What does leaving mean? In a battle royale, leaving early normally means forfeiting the contest or being eliminated; the goal is to remain until the end. In an extraction game, choosing and reaching an exit is a central accomplishment that can preserve the run’s gains.
- Does loot survive the match? Persistent or carried value strongly suggests extraction design, although not every game uses the same progression system. Battle-royale pickups generally support the current survival attempt rather than forming the primary long-term economy.
- How does the map create encounters? A shrinking battleground tends to concentrate battle-royale players. An extraction map creates routes between objectives, loot areas, and exits, with noise and risk shaping those routes. An arena keeps the conflict inside a deliberately bounded combat space.
- What happens after death? Extraction games may impose substantial losses or permanent consequences for a run. Battle royales can eliminate players while still offering conditional squad-based returns, as REDSEC demonstrates. Arena modes commonly define their identity through a chosen respawn, life, round, or score system.
Games can combine these structures
An extraction mission does not automatically create an extraction shooter
Battlefield REDSEC’s official guide documents a Battle Royale mode that can include a “Data Extraction” mission: squads collect data, deliver it to an extraction drone, and prevent rivals from taking it. That is an extraction objective inside a broader battle-royale match. The presence of one mission does not change the mode’s overall classification if the match still primarily asks squads to outlast one another.
Classify the whole loop, not one feature
To describe a hybrid accurately, identify the dominant success condition and the stakes that persist across the session. A battle royale with an optional delivery mission remains battle-royale-oriented if the final outcome is still determined by survival. An extraction game may include arena-like firefights, but those fights serve the larger enter-loot-exit loop. A compact map alone does not make a mode an arena shooter if the decisive objective is to escape with valuables.
Why genre labels are not perfectly standardized
Publishers, developers, players, and analysts use overlapping terminology. Newzoo’s 2022 taxonomy treats Battle Royale as an independent genre rather than placing it inside its Shooter Games category. That classification choice illustrates why a label should be treated as useful shorthand, not a universal hierarchy. See the Newzoo Game Genre Report for the taxonomy note.
Developer wording can also signal design variation. Embark’s use of “Extraction Adventure” for ARC Raiders and “Dynamism Shooter” for THE FINALS shows that studios may choose neighboring terms to emphasize a game’s particular combination of mechanics. A clear explanation should therefore name the rules players will experience: win condition, map structure, loot persistence, extraction requirements, and death consequences.
Examples in one comparison
| Question | Battle royale | Extraction shooter | Arena shooter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary objective | Outlast the remaining players or teams. | Secure loot or objectives and extract alive. | Win the fight, round, score race, or arena objective. |
| Typical map logic | Shared large space; a shrinking area may force encounters. | Routes connect loot, missions, threats, and extraction points. | Bounded combat arena designed for direct engagements. |
| Role of loot | Usually prepares you for the current survival match. | Often carries value beyond the current run; exact persistence varies. | Usually secondary to weapons, movement, combat, or objectives. |
| Meaning of death | Often removes you from the contest, with conditional returns in some modes. | Can cost carried loot or make the run’s failure permanent, depending on the title. | Defined by the mode’s respawn, life, round, or score rules. |
| Terminology certainty | Broadly recognized, though implementations differ. | Recognized around the enter-loot-exit loop, with neighboring names in use. | Less consistently standardized; describe the actual rules. |
A practical checklist for describing any FPS mode
- State whether the viewpoint is first person, then separately identify the multiplayer structure.
- Name the winning condition in one sentence.
- Explain whether players must stay until the end or can succeed by extracting early.
- Describe whether loot has value after the match and what death can remove.
- Note whether the map shrinks, funnels players toward exits, or keeps combat in a bounded arena.
- Specify respawn, squad-return, life, and round rules instead of assuming “no respawns” or “instant respawns.”
- Call out hybrid missions and classify the mode by its dominant loop.
The bottom line
Battle royale is an outlasting contest, extraction shooter is a high-stakes enter-loot-exit run, and arena shooter is direct combat or objective play inside a bounded space. The same FPS can borrow mechanics from all three. When the label is unclear, follow the match’s real incentives: what wins the game, what a successful departure accomplishes, what survives after death, and how the map controls encounters.
