How to Gather Infrastructure Metrics with Packetbeat and ELK

Packetbeat provides passive network and application-transaction telemetry for ELK—not host CPU or memory metrics. This guide covers installation, sniffer and interface configuration, secure publishing, Kibana verification, dashboards, troubleshooting, and when to add Metricbeat.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Packetbeat can show how applications and services communicate across your infrastructure, but it is not the collector for host CPU, memory, disk, or process utilization. Deploy Packetbeat on the systems whose traffic you need to observe, send its events to Elasticsearch directly or through Logstash, and use Kibana to search transactions, latency, errors, and service relationships. Add Metricbeat (or Elastic’s current host-metrics integration) when you need resource metrics from the hosts themselves.

The reliable implementation sequence is: install Packetbeat, configure its output and credentials, select a visible network interface and sniffer, enable the protocols and enrichments your environment needs, load the index template and dashboards with packetbeat setup -e, start the service, and verify data in Kibana’s packetbeat-* data view.

What Packetbeat measures—and what it does not

Packetbeat is a passive network and application-transaction sensor. Elastic describes it as “a real-time network packet analyzer that you can use with Elasticsearch to provide an application monitoring and performance analytics system.” It observes traffic on a host, decodes supported application-layer protocols, correlates requests with responses, and publishes transaction fields that you can search and visualize.

That makes Packetbeat useful for questions such as:

Packetbeat is not a general-purpose operating-system monitor. Its own internal monitoring statistics describe collection and publishing health, not the host’s CPU percentage, memory pressure, filesystem capacity, or process resource consumption. Elastic’s quick-start component map assigns those infrastructure metrics to Metricbeat (or the current Elastic host-metrics integration). A complete view normally combines both agents: Packetbeat for network transactions and Metricbeat for the resources that run them.

How Packetbeat fits into an ELK deployment

An ELK-style deployment separates collection, storage, search, and presentation:

Layer Role in this design
Packetbeat Captures visible traffic, decodes enabled protocols, correlates request and response events, and adds transaction context.
Logstash (optional) Receives Packetbeat events when you need a processing or routing stage before Elasticsearch.
Elasticsearch Stores, indexes, and searches Packetbeat events.
Kibana Provides Discover, dashboards, filters, and time-range controls for the indexed events.

Packetbeat can publish directly to Elasticsearch or send to Logstash. It uses Elastic Common Schema (ECS)-compatible fields, which makes its events easier to query alongside other Elastic telemetry when the versions and integrations are compatible.

Elastic Cloud Hosted is an optional managed deployment route. It can remove much of the work of operating Elasticsearch and Kibana, but you still have to install and operate Packetbeat where the traffic is visible and configure the correct endpoint, credentials, TLS settings, and permissions.

Plan collection before installing anything

Choose the observation point

Install Packetbeat on each host whose traffic you want to inspect. The agent only sees packets available on its selected interface and permitted by the operating system. Installing it on an unrelated host will not reveal traffic that never reaches that host. In virtualized, containerized, load-balanced, or encrypted topologies, map the path first and decide whether the client, server, proxy, or gateway is the useful observation point.

Define the questions and retention boundary

Decide whether the first use case is latency investigation, error discovery, dependency mapping, traffic profiling, or a combination. That decision determines which protocols, flow records, process enrichment, and Kibana filters are worth enabling. Also establish how long transaction data should remain searchable and who may view it; packet-derived fields can reveal service names, addresses, and request metadata that may require access controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check version and compatibility boundaries

Use the Packetbeat documentation that matches the installed release when selecting protocol analyzers and options. Exact protocol coverage, field names, dashboard assets, and integration behavior can change between releases. Keep Packetbeat, Elasticsearch, Kibana, and any Logstash pipeline within a tested compatibility range rather than assuming that similarly named versions are interchangeable.

Install and configure Packetbeat step by step

  1. Install the package on every monitored system. Use the package and installation method for that operating system and release. Confirm that the resulting Packetbeat binary can run with the privileges required for packet capture and that the host can reach the chosen Elasticsearch or Logstash endpoint.
  2. Configure the publishing destination. In packetbeat.yml, configure either the Elasticsearch output or the Logstash output, together with the endpoint, authentication, and TLS settings required by your deployment. Store sensitive values in the Elastic secrets keystore where possible instead of leaving credentials in plain configuration text.
  3. Select a sniffer and device. Configure the sniffer type and the network device that carries the traffic of interest. Elastic’s example uses pcap. On Linux, af_packet is documented as a faster option that does not require a kernel module. The special any device captures all messages available on the host, but it is not supported on macOS. Choose deliberately: a broad capture can increase noise and processing, while a narrow interface can silently omit the transactions you need.
  4. Enable the required protocol and enrichment features. Configure the protocol analyzers that match the traffic, then decide whether to collect network flows, add process enrichment, use processors, and apply SSL-related settings. A protocol that is not enabled, or traffic that does not match its expected framing, will not produce the transaction fields you are looking for.
  5. Load the index template and example dashboards. Run packetbeat setup -e after the output and credentials are valid. This command loads the recommended index template and sample Kibana dashboards. The setup operation needs permissions to create or update those assets, so treat an authorization error here as a deployment problem rather than an empty-data problem.
  6. Start Packetbeat. Start it with the service manager appropriate to the platform, or run the documented foreground form while testing. Confirm that the process remains running and that its logs do not report capture, authentication, TLS, or publishing errors.
  7. Verify the data view in Kibana. Open Discover, select the predefined packetbeat-* data view, and choose a time range that includes the test traffic. Then open the Packetbeat dashboard. The shipped dashboards are examples; Elastic recommends customizing them for your services and objectives.
  8. Generate a known transaction and trace it end to end. Make one controlled request across the selected interface, then check whether an event appears in Discover. This separates a capture problem from a dashboard or time-filter problem and gives you a concrete event with which to validate fields.

Sniffers and interfaces: the setting that controls visibility

Choice Documented behavior When to consider it
pcap Elastic’s example sniffer type for packet capture. Use when it matches the platform and capture requirements in the release documentation.
af_packet On Linux, documented as faster than the example approach and not dependent on a kernel module. Consider for Linux hosts where capture efficiency matters and the interface is supported.
any device Captures all messages available on the host; unsupported on macOS. Useful for discovery when the correct interface is unknown, but validate noise, overhead, and platform support before keeping it.

Interface selection is a common reason for an apparently healthy but empty deployment. A host can be connected to several networks, use a virtual interface for container traffic, or receive traffic through a proxy that hides the original connection. Confirm that the selected device actually sees the packets and that the traffic is not encrypted or encapsulated in a way the configured analyzer cannot decode.

Configure protocol analyzers, flows, and enrichment

Protocol analyzers

Enable only analyzers relevant to the traffic you intend to investigate. When an analyzer recognizes a request and its response, Packetbeat can expose transaction timing, outcome, and service interaction fields. If the protocol is absent, disabled, unsupported in the installed release, or carried in an unexpected form, the resulting event may contain only lower-level flow information—or no useful event at all.

Network flows

Flow data provides traffic-pattern context even when a full application transaction cannot be decoded. Use it to identify communicating endpoints, direction, and volume patterns, then narrow the investigation to a protocol or service. Flow records complement transaction events; they do not turn Packetbeat into a host-resource collector.

Process enrichment

Process enrichment can connect observed traffic to the local process responsible for it when the platform and permissions support that association. This is valuable on busy hosts where several services share an interface. Treat missing process fields as a permissions, platform, or correlation limitation rather than proof that no process generated the traffic.

Processors and SSL settings

Processors can normalize, drop, or add fields before publishing. Use them to shape events for the queries and retention policy you actually operate, while preserving the fields needed for incident investigation. Configure SSL options consistently with the endpoint and certificate policy. A mismatch in certificate verification, protocol, or credentials prevents publication even when packet capture itself is working.

Use Kibana to investigate the signals Packetbeat provides

Start in Discover

Discover is the quickest way to determine whether events exist and which fields are populated. Select packetbeat-*, widen the time range beyond Kibana’s default last 15 minutes when necessary, and inspect a recent event. Filter progressively by host, client, server, protocol, service, or error field instead of applying several unknown filters at once.

Read latency and response behavior together

Transaction latency is meaningful only with a time range, service identity, and outcome. Compare response-time behavior for one service or dependency over equivalent periods, then inspect errors and request volume in the same slice. A rising response time with stable volume suggests a different line of inquiry from a response-time change caused by a sudden traffic surge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trace service interactions

Use client and server fields to follow a request path across services. Begin with the entry point where users or upstream systems report a problem, identify the slow or failing dependency, and then filter to that dependency’s traffic. Process enrichment can help distinguish multiple local services that share an interface.

Customize dashboards around decisions

The preloaded dashboards demonstrate what can be visualized, not a finished operating model. Replace generic panels with views tied to your service-level objectives: transaction volume, latency distribution or trend, error behavior, dependency health, and the hosts or processes involved. Packetbeat versus the rest of the Elastic telemetry stack

Component Primary telemetry domain Typical collection position What it answers
Packetbeat Network and application transactions Host interface where traffic is visible Which services communicate, how transactions behave, and where latency or errors appear.
Metricbeat Infrastructure metrics Host or supported service integration How CPU, memory, disk, and other resource indicators are behaving.
Filebeat Logs Systems that produce log files or streams What applications and operating systems recorded as events or errors.
Heartbeat Uptime and availability checks Probe location Whether an endpoint responds from the probe’s perspective.
APM Application-performance telemetry Instrumented application or service Application-level traces and performance data from supported instrumentation.

These domains overlap in an investigation but are not interchangeable. Packetbeat can show that a request became slow; Metricbeat can show host resource pressure at the same time; logs can explain an application error; Heartbeat can confirm whether an endpoint is reachable; and APM can provide deeper in-process application context. Choose components by the question, collection position, field coverage, operational overhead, dashboard needs, and compatibility with the versions you run.

What “infrastructure metrics” means in a Packetbeat deployment

If your definition of infrastructure metrics is network-level service health—transaction counts, response behavior, errors, and dependencies—Packetbeat is an appropriate collector. If it means host utilization, Packetbeat alone is the wrong tool. Add Metricbeat or the current Elastic host-metrics integration and correlate both data sets in Kibana by host and time.

This split prevents a common design error: installing Packetbeat, seeing network events arrive, and assuming that missing CPU or memory fields indicate a broken installation. Those fields are absent because they belong to a different telemetry domain. Conversely, installing only a host-metrics collector leaves you without passive evidence of which dependency introduced latency or errors.

Troubleshoot an empty or incomplete deployment

Discover shows no events

  • Confirm that Discover is using the predefined packetbeat-* data view rather than an unrelated data view.
  • Widen Kibana’s time filter beyond the default last 15 minutes and reproduce a known transaction.
  • Check that Packetbeat is running and that its logs show successful publication rather than repeated retries.
  • Verify the selected network device sees the traffic and that the configured sniffer is supported on the operating system.

Events exist, but transaction fields are missing

  • Check that the relevant protocol analyzer is enabled and configured for the traffic’s actual framing.
  • Confirm that the traffic reaches the interface where Packetbeat is installed; a proxy, container network, or different route may place it elsewhere.
  • Use flow information to determine whether packets are visible but undecodable.
  • Review the installed release documentation for protocol and field support instead of assuming another release has identical coverage.

Setup fails before dashboards appear

  • Validate Elasticsearch or Logstash connectivity, credentials, and TLS settings.
  • Ensure the account used by packetbeat setup -e can create or update the index template and Kibana assets.
  • Run setup against the intended cluster and Kibana space, then confirm that the data view and dashboards were created where you expect them.

Packetbeat captures locally but cannot publish

  • Test network reachability to the configured output endpoint from the monitored host.
  • Recheck authentication and certificate verification, especially after rotating credentials or certificates.
  • Inspect processors for rules that drop or rename events unexpectedly.
  • If using Logstash, verify the receiving pipeline and its onward Elasticsearch connection separately from Packetbeat.

Results are noisy or resource use is higher than expected

  • Replace a broad any capture with the specific interface that carries the required traffic when platform support allows.
  • Limit analyzers, flows, and enrichments to the questions you need to answer.
  • Use processors and retention choices to avoid indexing fields or events that have no operational value.
  • Balance capture coverage against the host’s role; a busy gateway can produce substantially more events than a lightly used service host.

Operational practices for a dependable rollout

Roll out in a test slice

Start with one host and one known transaction path. Validate capture, decoding, publishing, template loading, and dashboard visibility before expanding to additional interfaces or environments. Keep a record of the Packetbeat, Elasticsearch, Kibana, and Logstash versions used in the successful test.

Protect credentials and captured data

Use the secrets keystore for sensitive values where possible, enforce the TLS policy required by your organization, and grant setup and publishing permissions deliberately. Restrict Kibana access to the teams that need transaction data and align retention with its diagnostic value.

Monitor the monitor

Packetbeat’s internal monitoring metrics help identify collection, queueing, and publishing problems. Alert on sustained failures or a prolonged absence of expected events, but do not treat those internal metrics as substitutes for Metricbeat’s host CPU, memory, disk, or process measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep dashboards service-specific

After the initial validation, create views for the services, dependencies, and SLOs your team actually owns. A dashboard that exposes every protocol and host at once can conceal the one failing dependency. Use saved filters and consistent time ranges so responders can move from an overview to a precise transaction without rebuilding the investigation.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need dependency, latency, or transaction-error visibility? Deploy Packetbeat where the traffic is visible.
  • Need CPU, memory, disk, or process utilization? Add Metricbeat or the current host-metrics integration.
  • Need logs correlated with those events? Add Filebeat or the applicable log integration.
  • Need reachability from a defined vantage point? Add Heartbeat.
  • Need in-process application traces? Evaluate APM instrumentation.
  • Need less infrastructure to operate? Consider Elastic Cloud Hosted, while retaining responsibility for Packetbeat placement, configuration, permissions, and network visibility.

The key design decision is not whether Packetbeat can be made to emit more fields; it is whether the field belongs to passive network telemetry in the first place. Once that boundary is clear, the ELK workflow is straightforward: capture the right interface, decode the right protocols, publish securely, load the template, verify in Discover, and build Kibana views around the questions your operators must answer.
