How to Uninstall WooCommerce from WordPress Safely

A careful guide to deactivating and deleting WooCommerce without losing store data, plus the permanent wp-config.php method, Action Scheduler warning, dependency order and post-uninstall checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove WooCommerce without losing store records, deactivate it and click Delete in Plugins → Installed Plugins; WooCommerce leaves its data in place by default. Permanent erasure is a separate, destructive procedure that requires a verified backup, exports of records you must keep, and a deliberate WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA setting in wp-config.php.

Understand what “uninstall” means

WordPress has two distinct plugin lifecycle actions: deactivation and deletion. Deactivation turns a plugin off. Deletion runs the plugin’s uninstall process and removes its plugin files. The WordPress Plugin Handbook describes the normal lifecycle as deactivating a plugin and then choosing Delete in the administrator. WooCommerce follows that lifecycle, but its default uninstall behavior is deliberately conservative: WooCommerce data is left in the database unless you explicitly enable its full-removal option.

That means a normal WooCommerce deletion is generally the reversible route. Products, orders, coupons, settings and related WooCommerce records should be treated as retained, even though the storefront and WooCommerce administration screens stop working until the plugin is installed and activated again. Full removal is different: WooCommerce says it removes all WooCommerce data and warns that the action is destructive and permanent.

Choose the right removal route

Decision point Normal deactivation and deletion Full data removal
How it starts Plugins → Installed Plugins → deactivate WooCommerce, then click Delete Add define( 'WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA', true ); to wp-config.php, then deactivate and delete
Reversibility Plugin data remains available if WooCommerce is installed again Intended to erase WooCommerce data; recovery depends on a backup
Data scope Removes WooCommerce plugin files while retaining store data by default Removes WooCommerce data, including products, order data, coupons and other WooCommerce records
Dependency risk Companion extensions still need to be handled in the correct order The same dependency checks apply, plus the database-removal risk of the extra constant
Follow-up work Remove leftover theme, menu, shortcode, webhook and integration references Perform the same site cleanup after confirming the data is gone

If you are changing platforms, closing a store temporarily, diagnosing a conflict or simply testing a different commerce system, use the normal route first. Choose full removal only when the records are no longer needed and your backup and exports have been checked.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

What to do before touching the plugin

1. Create and verify a complete backup

Make a full copy of both the WordPress files and database. WooCommerce’s full-removal warning is permanent, so a backup is your recovery path if you later discover that an order, product, customer record or configuration was still needed. Keep at least one copy outside the WordPress installation—for example, on an external hard drive or SSD used for WordPress backups—and verify that the archive can actually be opened or restored. The official guidance does not prescribe a particular backup product, storage device or capacity.

  • Include the database, where products, orders, settings and scheduled-task records are stored.
  • Include wp-content and the rest of the site files, including the current theme and media.
  • Record the backup date and the WordPress site on which it was made.
  • Do not proceed to permanent removal until you can identify a usable recovery copy.

2. Export records that must survive the change

Backups are for recovery; exports are for practical use after WooCommerce is gone. Export the business records you may need for accounting, tax, legal retention, customer service, migration or an audit, and store those files outside the site. Decide in advance how you will access them without WooCommerce. The exact export format and retention period depend on your business and jurisdiction, so preserve whatever your accountant, legal adviser or successor system requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Inventory extensions and integrations

List every active WooCommerce extension, payment connection, shipping or tax integration, theme customization and external service that expects WooCommerce to be present. WordPress.com support specifically advises handling companion plugins such as WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping and WooCommerce Tax before deleting WooCommerce. Deactivate and, where appropriate, delete those dependent extensions first. A dependent extension left active can produce an error or crash when its base plugin disappears.

Also note payment webhooks, scheduled imports, fulfillment connections, analytics jobs, customer-account links and custom code. These may continue trying to call WooCommerce after the plugin is removed. Their removal or reassignment is site-specific and may require the extension or theme developer’s instructions.

4. Plan a maintenance window

Plugin deletion changes the storefront and administration immediately. Pick a period when orders are not being accepted, notify anyone who administers the site, and make sure you can reach the hosting control panel or file manager in case a configuration edit needs to be reversed. If the store must remain online, prepare a maintenance page or another destination before you begin.

Safely remove WooCommerce while keeping its data

Use these steps when you want WooCommerce files and runtime behavior removed but may need the products, orders or settings later.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Confirm the backup and exports. Do not rely on an unverified archive, and do not skip business-record exports merely because you made a database backup.
  2. Remove dependent extensions first. In Plugins → Installed Plugins, deactivate companion plugins and delete those you no longer need. WooCommerce’s documented examples include WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping and WooCommerce Tax.
  3. Deactivate WooCommerce. In Plugins → Installed Plugins, find WooCommerce and select Deactivate. Deactivation stops WooCommerce code from running; it does not perform the full data wipe.
  4. Delete the plugin. On the same screen, click Delete for WooCommerce and confirm WordPress’s prompt. This is the documented WordPress uninstall lifecycle, and WooCommerce leaves its data in place by default.
  5. Check the public site. Visit the home page, relevant landing pages, login, former shop and checkout URLs, and any replacement pages. Confirm that the remaining theme and plugins render normally. A checkout URL may now be intentionally unavailable; the important check is that it fails in a controlled way rather than breaking unrelated pages.
  6. Check essential administration screens. Sign in and review the dashboard, media library, users and any replacement plugin’s settings. Look for fatal-error messages, missing widgets or templates, and unexpected redirects.
  7. Remove references that are no longer valid. Edit navigation menus, widgets, blocks, shortcodes, theme templates and custom code that point to shop, cart, checkout or account pages. Disable payment webhooks, scheduled integrations and automation jobs that have no replacement destination.
  8. Keep the retained data protected. Because the default uninstall leaves WooCommerce records behind, maintain the backup and export policy for as long as those records are subject to business or legal retention.

Reinstalling and activating WooCommerce can make retained data available again, provided the WordPress site, database and compatible extensions remain intact. A normal deletion is therefore the appropriate first choice when your decision is not irreversible.

Know exactly what normal deletion leaves behind

Deleting the plugin files is not the same as emptying the store database. Under WooCommerce’s default behavior, products, order data, coupons, settings and related records remain available for a later installation. This distinction matters when a store is being paused, redesigned or migrated: removing the runtime does not by itself create a clean database.

Retained records can still be subject to your organization’s accounting, tax, privacy and customer-service obligations. Keep the backup and exports in the same controlled manner you would use while the store was active. If another administrator assumes the site has been wiped simply because WooCommerce no longer appears in the plugin list, clarify that the data remains.

When the normal route is used, reinstalling a compatible WooCommerce version is the potential recovery path. When the full-removal flag is used, there is no intentionally retained WooCommerce dataset for a later installation to rediscover; recovery then depends on the database backup or exported records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a dependency map before deletion

Dependency order is more than housekeeping. Companion plugins can load WooCommerce functions during their own startup, so deleting the base plugin first can trigger an error or crash. Make a short list of every active extension that mentions WooCommerce, payments, shipping, tax, checkout, orders or products, then decide whether each item will be removed, replaced or retained.

  • Handle WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping and WooCommerce Tax before WooCommerce, as WordPress.com support recommends.
  • Check the active theme and custom snippets for WooCommerce functions, templates and shortcodes.
  • Identify external webhooks and scheduled jobs that expect product, order or customer endpoints.
  • After deletion, revisit the list and mark each dependency as removed, repointed or deliberately inactive.

If you cannot determine whether an integration is dependent, do not guess during a production change. Preserve the backup, consult the integration’s documentation, and use the reversible route until the dependency is understood.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

Permanently remove WooCommerce data

Use this path only after confirming that the store records are no longer needed and that your backup and exports are restorable. WooCommerce’s own warning says: “As this action is destructive and permanent, the information is provided as is. WooCommerce Support cannot help with this process or anything that happens as a result.”

Enable the documented full-removal flag

  1. Open the site’s wp-config.php using your host’s file manager, secure file transfer or another method appropriate for your installation.
  2. Insert this line above the comment /* That's all, stop editing. */:
define( 'WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA', true );
  1. Save the file without changing the surrounding database credentials or other configuration.
  2. Return to Plugins → Installed Plugins, deactivate WooCommerce and then click Delete.
  3. Wait for the uninstall process to finish, then inspect the site and administrator for errors.

WooCommerce states that this option removes all WooCommerce data, including products, order data and coupons. The comparison also includes WooCommerce pages, tables, options and other records created for the store. Treat the result as unrecoverable except through your verified backup. If you later reinstall WooCommerce, there will be no intentionally retained store dataset for it to restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether Action Scheduler tables may be removed

WooCommerce does not remove Action Scheduler tables through WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA because another active plugin may use the shared library. Only when you have verified that no other active plugin depends on Action Scheduler should you add the second constant, also above the “That’s all, stop editing” line:

define( 'WC_REMOVE_ACTION_SCHEDULER', true );

Both constants are needed for the extra Action Scheduler table removal. Do not add this line merely to make the database appear cleaner. If another plugin still relies on those tables, deleting them can disrupt that plugin’s scheduled work. When dependency usage is uncertain, leave the constant out and preserve the shared tables.

What WooCommerce cleans up during uninstall

The published WooCommerce uninstall code clears WooCommerce’s scheduled hooks. The cleanup covers:

  • scheduled sale events;
  • automatic cancellation of unpaid orders;
  • customer-session cleanup;
  • personal-data cleanup tasks;
  • log cleanup;
  • GeoIP database updates;
  • tracking tasks;
  • rate-limit cleanup;
  • WooCommerce Admin daily tasks; and
  • category lookup-table generation.

Clearing these hooks does not remove every external connection or every piece of custom site code. Payment providers, shipping services, tax services, theme templates, webhooks and remote automation can have their own settings and queues. Check each integration separately after deletion.

After deletion: a practical verification checklist

Public-facing checks

  • Open the home page and several ordinary content pages.
  • Test the former shop, cart, checkout and account URLs and confirm the intended replacement or error page appears.
  • Check the site on a logged-out browser and, if relevant, on a mobile viewport.
  • Confirm that navigation menus and footer links no longer lead visitors into a dead WooCommerce flow.

Administration and integration checks

  • Review the dashboard for fatal errors, missing widgets or notices from dependent plugins.
  • Inspect active plugins and remove extensions that have no remaining purpose.
  • Search theme templates, custom snippets and page content for WooCommerce shortcodes, functions or URLs.
  • Disable payment, shipping, tax, analytics and fulfillment webhooks that still target the old store.
  • Review scheduled integrations and server-side jobs that could continue sending requests to deleted endpoints.
  • If full removal was selected, compare the result with the backup and retained exports rather than assuming that a clean-looking dashboard proves every record is gone.

Troubleshooting common failure modes

WordPress reports an error or the site crashes after deletion

A dependent extension may still be active. Restore the backup if necessary, identify the extension that expects WooCommerce, and deactivate or remove it before attempting the deletion again. WordPress.com’s support guidance calls out WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping and WooCommerce Tax as examples of companions to handle first.

The products or orders are missing after reinstalling

Check which route you used. Normal deletion leaves WooCommerce data in place; enabling WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA instructs WooCommerce to erase it. If the full-removal flag was used, recover the needed records from the verified database backup or use the exports you made before deletion.

The database still contains Action Scheduler tables

That is expected unless you deliberately added WC_REMOVE_ACTION_SCHEDULER. WooCommerce avoids deleting those tables because another active plugin may share them. Leave them intact when dependency use has not been ruled out.

Old shop links or shortcodes remain on the site

Plugin uninstall cannot know which menus, widgets, templates or custom content your site intends to keep. Edit those references manually, replace the destination, or remove the component. Theme and extension documentation may be necessary for custom templates or code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which route should you use?

  • Temporarily closing or redesigning a store: deactivate and delete WooCommerce normally so the data remains available.
  • Switching to another commerce system: export the records first, remove dependent extensions, then use normal deletion until the migration has been checked.
  • Abandoning the store and its records: verify the backup and exports, enable WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA, and accept that the removal is permanent.
  • Cleaning Action Scheduler tables: do so only after confirming that no active plugin shares them; otherwise do not set WC_REMOVE_ACTION_SCHEDULER.

The safest default is to remove WooCommerce normally and postpone database destruction. That preserves an escape route while you confirm that replacement pages, integrations and business records are all accounted for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I uninstall WooCommerce without losing my products?

In WordPress Admin, deactivate WooCommerce and then click Delete under Plugins → Installed Plugins. Do not add WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA to wp-config.php. WooCommerce leaves products, orders, coupons, settings and related records in place by default, so a compatible reinstall can make the retained data available again.

Does deleting WooCommerce delete orders?

Not when you use the normal WordPress deletion process. Default uninstall removes the plugin files but leaves WooCommerce data in the database. Orders are removed only when you deliberately enable the full-removal path with define( ‘WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA’, true ); and then deactivate and delete WooCommerce.

What should I back up before removing WooCommerce?

Make a complete copy of the WordPress files and database, including wp-content, the theme and media. Verify that the archive can be opened or restored, keep a copy outside the site such as on an external hard drive or SSD for WordPress backups, and export records needed for accounting, tax, legal, customer-service or migration purposes.

Which plugins should I remove before WooCommerce?

Handle dependent extensions first. WordPress.com support specifically names WooPayments, WooCommerce Shipping and WooCommerce Tax. Review every payment, shipping, tax and other integration, then deactivate and, where appropriate, delete companions before deleting the WooCommerce base plugin.

How do I completely remove WooCommerce and its database data?

After verifying a restorable backup and required exports, add define( ‘WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA’, true ); to wp-config.php above /* That’s all, stop editing. */. Save the file, deactivate WooCommerce and click Delete. WooCommerce describes this as destructive and permanent and says it removes products, order data, coupons and other WooCommerce records.

Should I delete Action Scheduler tables too?

Only if you have verified that no other active plugin uses Action Scheduler. WooCommerce intentionally leaves those shared tables alone through WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA. To request their removal, add define( ‘WC_REMOVE_ACTION_SCHEDULER’, true ); above the same wp-config.php comment, alongside the full-removal constant. When usage is uncertain, leave the tables intact.

Why are old shop or checkout links still visible after uninstalling?

Uninstall does not know which menus, widgets, blocks, shortcodes, theme templates, webhooks or custom code your site still references. Remove or repoint those items manually, and disable payment or scheduled integrations that no longer have a valid WooCommerce destination.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What scheduled work does WooCommerce clear during uninstall?

WooCommerce clears its scheduled sales events, unpaid-order cancellation, session cleanup, personal-data cleanup, log cleanup, GeoIP updates, tracking, rate-limit cleanup, WooCommerce Admin daily tasks and category lookup generation. External services and custom automation can have separate queues, so check those independently.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Back up and export first, remove dependent extensions, then use normal deactivation and deletion unless you are certain the store data is no longer needed. Enable WC_REMOVE_ALL_DATA only for a verified, permanent wipe, and remove Action Scheduler tables only after confirming that no other plugin shares them.
