Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo set up a separate Work Profile on your Android phone, first ask your employer’s IT administrator which enrollment method and app your organization requires. A managed Google account may start setup when you add it; organizations using another enterprise mobility management (EMM) system may require a specific management app. Follow the prompts, complete any required screen-lock setup, and install the work apps your organization provides.
What an Android Work Profile separates
A Work Profile creates a managed space for work apps and their data alongside your personal apps and data. Work apps are marked with a briefcase badge, and you can usually find them in a Work tab or the app drawer. In the standard personally owned-device model, your employer manages the work profile while your personal apps, data, and usage remain private. On company-owned devices, management may also apply some policies to the personal profile or the device as a whole. Google’s overview of Work Profile features explains the separation and available controls.

Check eligibility and your organization’s enrollment method
Do not choose a management app on your own. Ask IT whether the organization supports Work Profile enrollment on your phone, whether it uses Google Workspace or Cloud Identity, or whether you must enroll through a particular EMM app. The organization controls the available route, work-app distribution, and many setup requirements.

Set up the profile
If your organization uses Google Workspace or Cloud Identity
- Follow your IT team’s instructions for adding your managed work account to the phone.
- Accept the prompts to create and manage the Work Profile. On the Pixel-specific path documented by Google, Android Device Policy is installed when prompted.
- Set a screen lock if setup requires one, then complete the remaining on-screen steps.
- Install or open the work apps provided by your organization.
Google’s Workspace setup guide describes this flow for Pixel phones running Android 8.0 Oreo or later; other manufacturers may show different screens or steps.
If your organization uses another EMM provider
- Get the name of the required management app from IT.
- Install that organization-selected app from Google Play.
- Open it and follow the enrollment prompts and instructions supplied by your organization.
- Complete any required screen-lock or policy steps, then install the approved work apps.
Enrollment is organization-controlled, so installing an unrelated management app will not substitute for the required process. Google’s employee enrollment guidance describes the supported routes.

Find work apps and check that the profile is active
After enrollment, look for the Work tab in the app drawer or for work apps marked with a briefcase. If work icons appear gray, the profile may be paused. If you cannot find work apps or a Work tab, confirm that enrollment finished and that your organization supports Work Profile on this device. Android settings vary by manufacturer; on Android 14 or later, searching Settings for “Work Profile” may help locate profile controls. If the profile exists but apps are missing, ask IT whether they need to approve or distribute apps through managed Google Play or the organization’s EMM.
Pause work apps and notifications
You can temporarily pause the Work Profile from its Work tab or a supported Quick Settings tile. While paused, work apps do not run or send work notifications. Turn the profile back on when you are ready to resume work apps. On company-owned devices, an administrator may limit how long the profile can remain paused. See Google’s instructions for pausing or turning on a Work Profile.

Review privacy and connected-app permissions
Work and personal apps are separate by default, but some organizations allow connected work and personal apps to share data. Whether that option is available depends on policy. Read the permissions shown before connecting apps, and do not enable sharing unless it suits your needs and is permitted by your organization. Google’s guidance on connecting work and personal apps covers the relevant controls.
Administrators can enforce security requirements for the work profile and remove its work data. On company-owned phones, some policies may extend beyond the profile. The precise controls depend on the device’s ownership and the organization’s management setup; Google’s management-features overview explains this distinction.

Remove a Work Profile safely
Removing a Work Profile deletes the apps and local data stored in that profile. Before removing it, sync or back up any work information you need according to your employer’s policy. On a personal device, profile removal is available in Settings; the exact menu path varies by device. A factory reset is different: it deletes both work and personal data. See Google’s Work Profile information for removal details, and contact IT if the profile is managed by your organization.
