What you need before starting
Gather the hardware and account details before connecting anything. Setup cannot finish without HDMI, power, Wi-Fi, and an Amazon account.

The box may also contain an HDMI extender. It is optional; keep it available if the stick cannot fit comfortably in the television’s HDMI socket or the surrounding plugs block access.

Choose the right Fire TV Stick for your television
Choose by the television you intend to use and the model documented for your market. The two models below have different display targets, but the basic connection and account process is the same.

When the HD model is the sensible choice
Use the Fire TV Stick HD when the TV is an HD set or when you do not need a 4K output target. It is the straightforward match for an entry-level HD installation and follows the same HDMI, power, Wi-Fi and Amazon-account requirements.
When to consider the 4K model
Choose the Fire TV Stick 4K when the television and your viewing objective are both 4K. The stick alone cannot turn an HD television into a 4K display, so buying the 4K model for an HD-only screen does not change that screen’s native capability.
Verify the exact regional listing
Amazon sells and documents Fire TV variants by market. Before purchasing, check the listing for your country and the exact model name, generation and included accessories. Do not assume that a specification, remote feature or availability shown for one region applies everywhere.

Connect the Fire TV Stick to the TV and power
- Locate an open HDMI port. Look at the back or side of the television for a vacant HDMI socket. Note its label, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2; you will select this same label with the television’s own remote.
- Insert the stick into HDMI. Plug the Fire TV Stick directly into the open port. If the television’s design leaves too little room for the stick or its cable, use the optional HDMI extender supplied in the box.
- Connect power. Attach the supplied USB cable to the Fire TV Stick and the supplied power adapter, then connect the adapter to a suitable outlet. The stick needs power in addition to the HDMI connection.
- Turn on the television. Use the television remote to select the HDMI input where the stick is connected. The Fire TV setup screen will not appear if the TV remains on a different input.
Keep the television remote nearby for input selection. Once the correct HDMI input is displayed, most of the remaining setup uses the Alexa Voice Remote.
Complete the on-screen setup
- Install the remote batteries. Insert the included AAA batteries in the Alexa Voice Remote, observing the polarity marks. Press a button; the remote should begin communicating with the Fire TV Stick.
- Choose a language. Use the directional ring and select button to choose the language shown on screen. If the wrong language is selected, continue far enough to reach the device settings and change it there; menu wording can vary by model and region.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Select your home network from the list, enter its password exactly, and wait for the connection confirmation. Keep the stick within reliable range of the router during registration and app downloads.
- Sign in or create an Amazon account. Enter the credentials for the Amazon account you want associated with this device, or follow the prompts to create one. Use the account that should manage the Fire TV Stick; changing accounts later can require signing out and registering again.
- Follow the remaining prompts. Amazon’s setup flow may present device-registration or preference screens. Read each prompt and make the requested selection rather than unplugging the stick while setup is still running.
- Select streaming apps. After the core setup, choose the services you want installed. Amazon’s consumer guide gives Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and Paramount+ as examples, along with other available apps. The selection shown on your screen depends on the device, account region and current app availability.
When the home screen appears, setup is complete. The initial download period can take longer on a busy or slow Wi-Fi connection; leave the stick powered until the selected apps finish installing.
Install apps and sign in to streaming services
Selecting apps during or after setup
The post-registration app screen is the quickest way to install common services. If you skip it, open the Fire TV app area from the home screen and search for a service by name. Select the official listing, choose the install or download command shown on screen, and wait for it to finish before opening it.

Registering the Fire TV Stick with Amazon does not automatically create accounts for every streaming service. Many apps require their own login, subscription or both. Have the credentials for each service ready, and check the service’s terms and regional availability if an app does not appear in search.

If an expected app is missing
- Confirm that the Fire TV Stick is connected to the intended Amazon account and Wi-Fi network.
- Search using the service’s current name; app names and catalogs can change.
- Check the account’s country or region, because availability is not identical in every market.
- Verify that the service supports the Fire TV model and software shown in your regional listing.
How to use the two remotes during setup
There are two distinct jobs for the remotes. The television’s original remote selects the correct HDMI input. The included Alexa Voice Remote navigates the Fire TV menus after its batteries are installed. If you are looking at a blank screen, first use the television remote to cycle through the HDMI inputs; pressing buttons on the Fire TV remote cannot correct a TV that is displaying another source.
Keep the Alexa Voice Remote pointed generally toward the television area while pairing and navigating. If no response appears after inserting batteries, remove and reseat them, check the polarity marks, and press a button again. A depleted or incorrectly installed battery can look like a network or HDMI problem because the setup screen will not advance.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The TV says “No signal” or shows a blank screen
- Use the television remote to select the exact HDMI label used by the stick.
- Remove and firmly reinsert the Fire TV Stick in that HDMI port.
- Check that the USB cable is connected to the stick and that the supplied power adapter is plugged into an outlet.
- Try another HDMI port on the television, then select that new input.
- If the stick is crowded by nearby connectors, insert the optional HDMI extender and repeat the input check.
If the television still shows no picture after these checks, verify that the outlet and power adapter are supplying power before continuing with account or Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
The Alexa Voice Remote does not respond
- Confirm that both AAA batteries are installed with the correct polarity.
- Press a button after reseating the batteries and wait briefly for the setup screen to react.
- Move closer to the Fire TV Stick and remove objects that may prevent the stick from fitting fully into HDMI.
- Restart the connection sequence by disconnecting power, waiting a moment, reconnecting it, and then pressing a remote button when the startup screen returns.
The Wi-Fi network is not listed or the password fails
- Check the network name and password on another device so you know which network is active.
- Move the television or router arrangement so the stick has a stronger signal, if practical.
- Re-enter the password carefully, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Restart the router if other devices also cannot connect, then return to the Fire TV network screen.
- If the network remains unavailable, use another known-working Wi-Fi network temporarily to determine whether the issue is with the stick or the original network.
Amazon account sign-in will not finish
Confirm that the stick is online, then re-enter the account credentials. Make sure you are using the account intended for this device rather than a different household account. If you created a new account during setup, use that account’s credentials consistently when the flow asks you to sign in again.

An app installs but will not open
- Check that the Fire TV Stick still has a working Wi-Fi connection.
- Open the app again from the home screen after installation completes.
- Sign in with the streaming service’s own account; Amazon registration does not replace that step.
- Search the app catalog for an update or a second listing if the service has changed its name.
The 4K television does not show a 4K option
First confirm that the connected device is the Fire TV Stick 4K model rather than the HD model, and that the stick is plugged into the intended television. Then verify the exact regional model documentation and the television’s own input settings. The research for this guide does not establish a universal menu path or a guaranteed 4K mode for every television, so use the model-specific instructions shown by Amazon and the TV manufacturer.

Before putting the television remote away, verify the items that affect everyday use:
- The TV remains on the HDMI input used by the Fire TV Stick.
- The Fire TV home screen loads after a power cycle.
- The Alexa Voice Remote moves through menus and selects an item.
- The Wi-Fi connection remains active when you open an installed app.
- Each service you intend to watch has been opened and signed in with its own account where required.
- The model matches the TV’s HD or 4K target and the regional product listing you purchased.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
Using only HDMI and forgetting power
HDMI is the video connection, not a substitute for the supplied power arrangement. A stick that is inserted correctly but not powered cannot complete setup.

Leaving the TV on the wrong input
The Fire TV interface appears only on the HDMI source carrying the stick’s signal. Always select that source with the television’s original remote.

Trying to use the TV remote for Fire TV menus
The original remote is needed for input selection. Use the included Alexa Voice Remote for the Fire TV setup screens unless your particular television provides a documented alternative.
Assuming one Amazon login covers every service
Amazon account registration and streaming-service authentication are separate. Plan to sign in to each app and maintain any subscription it requires.
Buying by the name alone
HD and 4K labels describe different viewing targets. Check the exact model, generation and regional listing rather than assuming that every Fire TV Stick has identical capabilities or accessories.
When to contact support or consult model-specific instructions
Use Amazon’s model-specific setup documentation when the on-screen wording, included remote or connection hardware differs from the steps above. Contact support after you have confirmed the HDMI input, power connection, remote batteries, Wi-Fi credentials and Amazon account but still cannot reach the home screen. Have the exact Fire TV model and the television’s HDMI input label available so the problem can be narrowed to hardware, display selection, network access or account registration.
