The exact cable and accessory arrangement can vary by model; the Amazon setup instructions linked below cover the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), so check the instructions supplied with your device if its ports or cables differ.
What you need before setup
- A TV with an available HDMI port.
- Your Fire TV Stick, its included power cable and remote, and the remote’s batteries.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Your Amazon account details, if you plan to sign in to an existing account.
For the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), Amazon also lists an HDMI extender as an optional accessory, not a requirement for every installation. See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation) setup instructions for that model’s included components and steps.

Connect the Fire TV Stick and power
- Connect the included USB-C power cable to the Fire TV Stick’s power port.
- Plug the stick into an available HDMI port on your TV. For the 4K (3rd Generation), Amazon describes connecting the other end of its included 1.3-foot cable to the TV’s USB-A port. If that port reports insufficient power, or the cable cannot reach, use a suitable USB-C cable and a 5V/1A power adapter connected to a wall outlet. Follow your exact model’s instructions if its connection differs.
- Open the remote’s battery compartment and insert the included AAA batteries.
- Turn on the TV with its remote and select the HDMI input where you connected the stick.
If the stick is hard to fit because the TV’s rear panel pocket is smaller than 4.5 inches, cables crowd the area, or back-facing ports are difficult to reach, Amazon says a 4K-compatible HDMI extender may help. It is optional; you do not need one when the stick fits and the HDMI connection is accessible.
Complete Wi-Fi and Amazon account setup
- Follow the Fire TV screen prompts to connect to Wi-Fi. On the cited 4K (3rd Generation) model, you can use QR setup with a phone or choose the network manually with the Fire TV remote. Have your Wi-Fi name and password ready.
- Sign in to an Amazon account or create one using the on-screen QR code or displayed activation-code flow.
- If you created the Amazon account without a password, Amazon’s instructions say to press Back when prompted, then enter the verification code at the web address shown on screen.
- Answer the equipment-control prompts if you want the Fire TV remote to control compatible equipment, such as a soundbar.
Fix common first-time setup problems
The TV shows no picture
- Check that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the stick.
- If the stick is connected through an HDMI hub, try connecting it directly to the TV.
- Use the supplied power equipment. If you see an insufficient-power notice, try a wall adapter rather than relying on an underpowered TV USB port. See Amazon’s low-power troubleshooting steps.
The remote does not pair
The remote normally pairs automatically after you insert its batteries and turn on the TV. If it does not, stay within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV Stick and hold Home for about 10 seconds. Reseat or replace the batteries if pairing still fails, then try Amazon’s remote pairing and reset instructions. Amazon also describes using the Fire TV app as an alternate pairing route.

- Ethernet is another possible route, but some Fire TV devices require an adapter. Check compatibility for your exact model before using one. See Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
You see an insufficient USB power notification
You can acknowledge or snooze the notice to continue temporarily, but Amazon says it will return until the power issue is fixed. Try another TV USB port, preferably USB 3.0 if available, or connect a suitable 5W (5V, 1A or equivalent) adapter to a wall outlet using a longer cable. See Amazon’s low-power troubleshooting steps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why setup does not guarantee 4K playback
Completing setup does not by itself ensure 4K streaming. Amazon says the connected equipment must support the target resolution, the streaming plan must include 4K, the internet connection needs adequate bandwidth, and the TV’s picture or input settings must be appropriate. If an AV receiver or soundbar sits between the stick and TV, Amazon specifies an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 and 4K pass-through. The Audio/Video Diagnostics tool is not available on every Fire TV device. See Amazon’s 4K playback guidance.
