To open Android Auto’s hidden developer settings, use your Android phone’s Settings search to find Android Auto. Open Android Auto Settings, tap Version to expand Version and permission info, then tap that expanded text 10 times in a row—or until the prompt appears. Choose OK on Allow development settings?, then open Developer settings from the menu. These settings are on the phone, not the car’s display. Google notes that steps may vary slightly by phone brand (Google Android Auto Help).

Tap OK, then open Developer settings from the menu.
The repeated taps apply to the expanded text, not the initial Version field. Google’s instructions are for Android Auto on the phone; you do not need to change a setting on the car’s head unit to reach this screen.
Android Auto Developer settings and phone Developer options are different
Android Auto Developer settings are a separate mode from the phone’s general Developer options. They have different activation and exit steps. You do not need to enable phone Developer options just to open Android Auto Developer settings.

If Google’s bug-report workflow asks you to enable phone Developer options, open the phone’s Settings, go to About phone (or System), find Build number, and tap it seven times or until You’re now a developer appears. Return to Settings or System and open Developer options. The exact path can vary by phone brand.
What to change—and when
Google documents Force debug logging as part of its procedure for preparing an Android Auto bug report. It is not a general requirement for everyday Android Auto use. If you are collecting a report, follow Google’s additional instructions: enable the phone’s Bug report shortcut, set Logger buffer sizes to 16M or the highest value available, and turn on Force debug logging in Android Auto Developer settings. Capture the report immediately after the problem occurs. Google warns not to disconnect the phone from the car display while capturing and sharing it. To turn off Android Auto Developer mode, return to Android Auto Settings, open the menu, and select Quit developer mode. If you separately enabled the phone’s Developer options, switch that mode off on the phone’s Developer options screen.

If the menu or prompt does not appear

Search for Android Auto in the phone’s Settings rather than relying on a particular manufacturer’s menu path.

Confirm that you expanded Version and are tapping the revealed Version and permission info text.

Keep tapping that expanded text until the prompt appears; Google’s documented instruction is 10 taps in a row or until the prompt appears.
Google says the steps may vary slightly between phone brands, but its help page does not give model-specific alternate paths.
