To set up Alexa on a standard Amazon Echo, install or update the Alexa app, plug in the Echo, then open Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more. Follow the prompts to connect the speaker to Wi-Fi and register it to your Amazon account.
Have your Amazon sign-in details, Wi-Fi network name and Wi-Fi password ready before you begin. Exact screens can differ by Echo model; the labels above match Amazon’s help flow reviewed on October 13, 2026.

What you need before setup
Gather the following items before opening the app:
- The Echo device and its power adapter. Keep the speaker close to the phone during setup and within range of your home router.
- A phone or other compatible mobile device with an internet connection.
- The current Alexa app. Install it if necessary, or update it before trying to add the Echo.
- An Amazon account. You will sign in so the Echo can be registered to your account.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password. Amazon specifically lists these details as prerequisites for the Echo Spot (2024 release), and they are also needed for the normal Echo setup flow.
Do not assume that every Echo follows precisely the same on-screen sequence. Amazon publishes separate instructions for speaker models, screen-equipped Echo devices and portable devices. If the model-specific guide conflicts with a generic step, use the guide for the exact model printed on your device or packaging.
Standard Amazon Echo setup in the Alexa app
For an Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop or a similar standard speaker, use this sequence.

When the app finishes, leave the Echo powered on and allow any requested software update to complete. Do not unplug it while an update or registration step is in progress.
If the Alexa app offers a different label
App navigation changes over time and can vary by phone operating system, account state and device family. If you do not see the exact wording above, stay in Devices and look for the control to add a new device, then select the Amazon Echo category. Amazon’s setup index is the appropriate place to select the exact Echo model when the generic category does not match what you see.
Echo Spot (2024 release): model-specific setup
The Echo Spot has a screen, so its setup can begin in two ways. Use the included power adapter, an internet-ready phone or other mobile device, an Amazon account and your Wi-Fi details.

What registration and Wi-Fi connection accomplish
The setup flow performs two related jobs. First, it gives the Echo access to your local Wi-Fi network so it can communicate over the internet. Second, it registers the device to the Amazon account used in the Alexa app. Completing both steps is what turns a newly powered speaker into an Echo that the account can manage.
The app may ask you to identify the network and enter its password even when the phone is already online. Your phone’s connection does not automatically provide the Echo with your Wi-Fi credentials; the Echo must be configured as a separate device.
Keep the Echo near the router and phone during first setup. This is a practical way to reduce discovery and signal problems while the app is transferring network information. Once setup is complete, you can move the Echo to its intended location and test it there.
Wi-Fi compatibility and network limits
Amazon says Echo devices support common home Wi-Fi networks using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and the 802.11a/b/g/n standards. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks. A network that works for a phone may therefore still be unsuitable if it is configured as an unsupported peer-to-peer arrangement.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
When to use a phone hotspot
If the Echo repeatedly fails to join your home Wi-Fi, Amazon recommends retrying setup with the phone used as a Wi-Fi hotspot. This is a diagnostic step, not a replacement for your normal home network:
- Enable the phone’s hotspot and note its network name and password.
- Return to the Alexa app’s add-device flow.
- When the app asks which network to use, select the phone hotspot and enter its password.
- Complete setup and see whether the Echo can register.
If the Echo connects through the hotspot, the device and app can complete setup and the problem is more likely related to the home network, its password or its configuration. Turn the hotspot off after testing and configure the Echo for the intended home network through Device Settings.
When several devices have connection trouble
If phones, computers or other connected devices are also losing internet access, the issue may not be specific to the Echo. Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider when several devices have connection problems.
Troubleshooting setup failures
Use the least disruptive check first. Updating the app and verifying the connection should come before a reset, because a reset erases the Echo’s current setup state.

The app does not find the Echo
- Confirm that the Echo is plugged in and has had time to start.
- Make sure the Alexa app is current.
- Open Devices, choose the add-device control and restart the Add Device flow.
- Select Amazon Echo, then Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more, rather than waiting only for an automatic pop-up.
- If the model is a screen-equipped or portable Echo, use the model-specific option in Amazon’s setup index instead of the standard speaker path.
Registration stalls or setup fails partway through
- Check that the phone itself has a working internet connection.
- Verify that the Alexa app is updated.
- Restart the Echo: unplug it, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Run the add-device flow again after the Echo restarts.
- If those steps do not resolve the problem, reset the Echo and repeat setup.
Amazon places the reset after connection checks and a restart. The exact reset action varies by Echo model, so use the instructions for that model rather than applying a button combination from a different device.
The Echo cannot connect to Wi-Fi
- Update the Alexa app.
- Confirm the Wi-Fi name and password, including capitalization and any special characters.
- Check that the network is a supported home Wi-Fi network rather than an ad-hoc or peer-to-peer network.
- Restart the Echo by unplugging it for 30 seconds and reconnecting it.
- Retry setup using the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- If the hotspot works but the home network does not, check the router or contact the internet service provider when other devices are affected.
- Reset the Echo only after the earlier steps fail, then start the setup flow again.
The Echo was set up but later went offline
First determine whether the home network is currently working on other devices. If the network is available, restart the Echo and retry its connection. If the network name or password changed, use the dedicated Wi-Fi change path described below instead of registering a second copy of the device.

Choosing the correct setup instructions by Echo family
Setup is not a hardware buying comparison. It is a way to select the right instructions for the device you already own.
| Echo family | Where setup starts | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Standard speaker, including Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Pop | Alexa app: Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more | Plug in the speaker, choose the category, then follow the prompts for Wi-Fi and registration. |
| Screen-equipped Echo, such as Echo Spot (2024 release) | Scan the QR code shown on the device or use Add Device in the Alexa app | The screen can launch guided setup; the app still completes Wi-Fi configuration, registration and any software update. |
| Portable Echo device | Use the exact model’s instructions in Amazon’s Echo setup index | Amazon publishes a separate flow for portable devices; labels and steps may differ from standard speakers. |
If you are unsure which family applies, identify the model before beginning. Choosing a near match in the app can lead to missing prompts or an unsuccessful discovery attempt.
A practical setup checklist
Use this checklist before declaring the Echo ready:
Recommended Free Tools
- The Alexa app is installed and updated.
- You are signed in to the Amazon account that should manage the Echo.
- The Echo is connected to power.
- The Wi-Fi network name and password are available.
- The Echo appears in the app’s add-device flow.
- The Echo joins the intended 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home network.
- The app completes registration without an error.
- Any requested software update finishes.
- The Echo remains connected after you move it to its final location.
Official setup guidance in one sentence
“Use the Alexa app to set up or register your Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, or Echo Dot Kids.”
That statement from Amazon’s Echo setup help page captures the central rule: the Alexa app is the control point for registering the ordinary Echo family. The model-specific instructions matter when you have a screen-equipped or portable device, or when the generic discovery flow does not match your hardware.
