To add alert boxes to a YouTube live stream, connect an alert provider to your channel, choose the events and appearance you want, add the provider’s alert widget to your streaming scene, and test it before going live. In Streamlabs Desktop, add an Alert Box source; in OBS Studio, a provider’s widget URL can be added as a Browser Source.
What a YouTube live alert box does
An alert box is an on-screen overlay from an alert provider. When the provider receives a supported event, such as a new subscriber, member, or contribution, its widget can display an animation, text, and sound in your stream scene. You configure the widget with the provider and render it through your streaming software.

“Alert” can also mean a notification YouTube sends to a viewer. That is separate from an overlay in your video: an alert box is part of the stream scene, while YouTube notifications are controlled by YouTube and each viewer’s account and device settings.

Set up and test alerts before going live
- Connect your YouTube channel. In your alert provider’s dashboard, use its platform or account-linking controls to connect YouTube. In Streamlabs, begin with its alert settings and platform-specific options.
- Choose which events to show. Enable only the event types you want in the stream, such as subscriber, member, or contribution alerts. Available event categories depend on the provider and platform integration.
- Customize the alert. Set the image or animation, sound, text, display duration, and any event variations the provider supports. Review YouTube-specific settings instead of assuming every platform offers identical events or controls, then save your changes.
- Add the widget to the scene.
- Streamlabs Desktop: In the target scene, add an Alert Box source from Sources.
- OBS Studio: Copy the widget URL from the provider dashboard. In the target scene’s Sources, add a Browser Source and enter that URL in its properties.
- Other software: Add the provider’s widget using its browser or web source, following that program’s current instructions.
- Position and size it. Place the source where it will not cover a face, gameplay information, captions, or other content viewers need to see.
- Run a test alert. Use the provider’s test function and check both the picture and sound in the scene you plan to stream. A test shows whether the widget renders and how it looks; it does not prove YouTube will expose or deliver every real subscriber event.
Why a real subscriber alert may not appear
Subscription privacy can hide a subscriber
YouTube subscriptions are private by default. An account with private subscriptions does not appear in a channel’s Subscribers List, so you should not promise that an alert widget will identify every new subscriber. See YouTube’s subscription privacy guidance.
YouTube viewer notifications are not overlay alerts
For encoder-based streams, YouTube says it sends live notifications to eligible subscribers after the broadcast is public and YouTube detects that it is live. A viewer’s channel-notification choices and YouTube account or device notification settings also affect delivery. These notifications are not the alert box displayed in your scene. Subscriber alerts may be delayed
Streamlabs’ troubleshooting page says YouTube subscriber alerts may be delayed by up to four hours. That is a caveat from Streamlabs’ help material, not a guaranteed delay for every provider or channel; check the alert provider’s current guidance if an event is missing. Troubleshoot an alert that does not show
- No test alert appears: Confirm the correct widget URL or source is in the scene, the source is visible, and you are testing the intended scene. Check that the latest provider settings were saved and that you triggered a test event.
- The widget works in a test but not for a real event: A widget test checks rendering, not whether a real event is visible to the provider. Check the event type’s platform-specific settings and consider subscription privacy or provider-side event delivery.
- The alert appears in the wrong place or covers content: Select the source in the target scene and adjust its position and size.
- There is no sound: Check that the alert has a sound configured and inspect the streaming software’s audio monitoring and output settings. Confirm the sound is audible in the scene before going live.
- Controls do not match a guide: Provider interfaces change. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting page is older than its general setup guide, so use current provider documentation for exact interface paths.
