YouTube’s published settings explain what to send; they do not certify a Mac mini for uninterrupted 24-hour 4K streaming. Test your exact setup before relying on it unattended. Also plan separately for a replay: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What the Mac mini has to do
A prerecorded video becomes a live broadcast when encoder software reads the file and continuously sends the stream to YouTube. With a Mac mini, the computer, OBS or another compatible encoder, and a stable internet connection must keep running. The machine is not simply uploading a file once: it must encode or otherwise process the source as required and transmit data continuously.

OBS supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream at a chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. No model-specific 24-hour 4K Mac mini benchmark or reliability result is established here. Treat compatibility as a starting point, not a promise.
Set the YouTube stream settings
YouTube’s encoder settings support H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. It lists frame rates up to 60 fps. The following 2160p/4K bitrates are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of what a Mac mini can sustain.

| 4K output | Codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p at 30 fps | H.264 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | AV1 or HEVC/H.265 | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | H.264 | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | AV1 or HEVC/H.265 | 35 Mbps |
Use settings supported by both the encoder and the selected YouTube workflow. YouTube’s 4K HDR live workflow requires HEVC and HLS; do not apply the SDR RTMP recommendations to an HDR setup. For SDR, YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 709. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current options.
Choose an encoder path for your Mac
Apple Silicon
OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware encoding for H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon Macs. Hardware encoding can move encoding work away from the CPU, but that alone does not establish that a specific Mac mini can deliver your chosen 4K quality continuously. Confirm that your OBS version exposes the intended encoder and settings, then test with the actual source video.

Intel Mac mini
OBS says Intel Macs cannot use its VideoToolbox path for streaming because that path does not support constant bitrate as required by most streaming services. OBS directs Intel Mac users to x264. Software encoding can put more work on the CPU, so test the actual resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and video for sustained operation rather than assuming an Intel model will manage 4K.
OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon processors and macOS 11 or later as basic Mac system requirements in its system requirements. Requirements are not a performance guarantee; OBS warns that the workload and settings matter. Its hardware encoding documentation explains the encoder distinctions.

Prepare the YouTube channel and stream key
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Confirm access before scheduling a long broadcast. See YouTube’s live streaming requirements.
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. In the live control room, configure the stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Enter the ingest details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube RTMPS service, and enter the stream key. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS endpoint where available.
- Configure output and video. In OBS, set the output encoder, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate to a combination supported by the machine and YouTube. Use the table above as YouTube’s 4K target, not as a guarantee of local performance.
- Load the prerecorded source. Add the video file as a media source and configure the source behavior for the intended broadcast: for example, whether it should loop or stop at the end. Confirm the picture and audio in OBS preview.
- Test before the real broadcast. Start a test stream, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and verify that the video and audio play as intended. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health before and during a broadcast.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Start streaming in OBS and confirm in YouTube’s live control room that the stream is reaching the channel and is accessible. For an unattended run, test the full intended looping or playlist behavior and observe how the setup responds to interruptions; OBS does not thereby guarantee automatic recovery.
Make sure the connection has enough upload capacity
Measure sustained upload speed at the Mac mini’s actual location. A fast download result does not prove that upload capacity is sufficient, and other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including any backup stream. For example, a 42 Mbps stream implies at least 50.4 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation. This is headroom guidance, not an uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s encoder setup tips.
- Prefer a reliable connection and avoid saturating it with other large uploads.
- Check OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators during a test, not just an internet speed-test result.
- Ensure the Mac mini will remain powered on and the network connection will remain active for the entire broadcast.
Know the 12-hour archive limit
A 24-hour live transmission and a complete 24-hour replay are different requirements. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, including streams at 1440p and 2160p/4K. It warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is an archive caveat, not proof that an encoder cannot transmit longer than 12 hours. If preserving the full recording matters, keep a local recording backup or plan shorter sessions and a separate recording workflow. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Check rights and live-stream policies
The video being prerecorded does not exempt the broadcast from YouTube rules. YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; copyright matching and strikes can also lead to live-stream restrictions. Make sure you have the necessary rights to broadcast every part of the video and its audio. No general checklist can determine whether a particular recording is cleared for your channel. Review YouTube’s live-stream guidance and the relevant rights for your content.

| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or the stream disconnects | Available upload capacity, network sharing, and whether the connection remains steady | Measure upload at the streaming location, reduce competing network use, and retest with the required bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| OBS cannot select the expected hardware encoder | Whether the Mac is Apple Silicon or Intel, and the encoder options OBS exposes | On Apple Silicon, check for the documented VideoToolbox H.264 option. On Intel, OBS directs streaming users to x264 because its VideoToolbox path lacks the required CBR support. |
| 4K output stutters or the computer struggles | The selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, source, and sustained workload | Run a longer test with the exact setup. If it is not stable, lower the frame rate or resolution, or choose an encoder setting the Mac can sustain; do not treat platform compatibility as proof of capacity. |
| The video ends instead of continuing | The media source’s end-of-file and loop behavior | Configure the source for the intended repeat behavior and verify the transition during a test before going live. |
| The live stream is present but no full replay appears | Whether the broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive caution threshold | Use a local recording backup or shorter sessions if the complete replay is important. |
| Live streaming is unavailable for the channel | Channel verification, prior live-stream restrictions, and first-time activation status | Resolve eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream activation before relying on the encoder. |
