First compare the browser viewport in CSS pixels with the saved image’s pixel dimensions, then verify the effective deviceScaleFactor, capture options, image format, and Puppeteer and Chrome versions.
1. Check the saved image dimensions against the CSS viewport
A viewport width and height describe browser layout dimensions in CSS pixels. The saved screenshot has raster dimensions in image pixels. Do not assume those numbers match: inspect the actual file and compare it with the viewport you set.

Puppeteer’s Viewport interface includes deviceScaleFactor, whose documented default is 1. Record the viewport width, height, and scale factor used by the page. Then inspect the screenshot’s width and height with your image viewer or image-processing tool. If the raster dimensions are not what you expected, investigate the effective scale factor and capture geometry before diagnosing softness.

Reduce the issue to one URL, one explicit viewport, and one screenshot call. Record the Puppeteer package version and the Chrome or Chromium version that Puppeteer launches; results from an unspecified version pair cannot establish a version-specific defect.

This minimal example sets the viewport explicitly, writes a PNG, and prints the browser version and requested viewport values. Replace the URL with the page that looks blurry.

3. Verify the effective device scale factor
Set deviceScaleFactor explicitly rather than relying on the default. In the reproduction, preserve the exact viewport values and confirm that the code path setting the viewport runs before capture. Compare the resulting raster dimensions with the dimensions you intended; a retina or high-DPI display setting in your local environment does not prove that the automated page is using the same scale factor.
4. Check capture geometry
Keep the capture region simple first, then add options back one at a time. Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions interface documents geometry-related settings that can change what is captured and the output dimensions.

fullPage: captures the full page rather than just the viewport.clip: captures a specified rectangle.captureBeyondViewport: affects capture beyond the viewport.
Record whether any of these options are set in the failing case. If the simple viewport capture is sharp but the configured capture is not, add the options back individually to isolate the geometry change.
5. Separate resolution from image encoding and display scaling
If the saved raster dimensions are adequate but the image still appears soft, compare a PNG with a JPEG capture. Puppeteer’s screenshot quality option applies to JPEG and WebP, not PNG; changing that setting will not improve a PNG. Also check whether a later step in your pipeline resizes the file or displays it at a scaled size. The file’s dimensions and the size at which a viewer renders it are separate things.

6. Common symptoms and fixes

7. When to call it a Puppeteer bug
Puppeteer issue #11514 discusses a specific report about captureBeyondViewport and deviceScaleFactor. That discussion is useful context, but it does not establish a general current high-DPI screenshot defect. Before filing or relying on a bug claim, include the minimal reproduction, exact Puppeteer and browser versions, viewport and scale factor, screenshot options, and saved image dimensions.
