Set it up inside the relevant Alert Box event type, add the Alert Box to your streaming software, and test it before going live.
What alert variations do
Streamlabs describes variations as a way to play different alerts when a viewer action meets a preset condition. That lets one event type—such as tips or subscriptions—show different visuals, sounds, or messages depending on the event. See Streamlabs Support’s How Do Alert Box Variations Work? for its explanation.

Use a variation when the alert should change in response to an event condition. If your goal is instead to assemble a broader overlay from several widgets, StreamElements documents an overlay editor with a native AlertBox widget; its workflow is distinct from Streamlabs variations. See StreamElements’ Overlay Editor documentation.
Create a variation in Streamlabs
- Open the Streamlabs dashboard and go to Alert Box.
- Choose the event category you want to customize, such as tips or subscriptions.
- Select Add Variation, enter a recognizable name, and define the condition that should trigger it. For example, use a higher tip amount or a subscription milestone if those are the distinctions you want to highlight.
- Customize the variation’s image or video, sound, and message. Use the preview to check how it looks while editing.
- Save your settings before leaving the Alert Box settings area or switching sections.
Choose clear names that identify both the event type and condition, so you can tell variations apart later. Streamlabs’ setup instructions are in its guide to adding live stream alerts.

OBS Studio or other software with browser sources
Copy the Alert Box widget URL from Streamlabs and add it to your software as a browser source. OBS documents browser sources as a way to display web content such as alert overlays; see OBS Studio’s Browser Source guide. Keep the widget URL private: anyone who has it may be able to access the overlay.

Check each scene in which alerts should appear. Streamlabs’ guide instructs users to select an additional scene and repeat the widget-add step when they want the alert present there. In OBS, verify that the source is present and visible in each relevant scene; a source added to one scene should not be assumed to appear in all others.

Test the variation before going live
- Use the Alert Box dashboard’s test function or live preview to trigger a test alert.
- Check that the alert is visible in the intended scene and appears in the correct position and at the intended size.
- Confirm the image or video, message text, and sound are the ones you assigned to that variation.
- Check that the alert appears at the expected time and is not obscured by other sources.
- If you use multiple scenes, test in each one where the Alert Box should appear.
A preview can verify presentation, but it may not reproduce every real event or condition. If a particular variation matters, confirm that its condition is set as intended and test using the options available in the service before your broadcast.
Choosing between variations and an overlay editor
- Choose Streamlabs variations when a particular event category should display different alerts based on conditions such as amount or milestone.
- Consider StreamElements’ overlay editor when the task is assembling an overlay from multiple widgets, including its AlertBox widget.
- Check platform and software fit against the events you need and the streaming software you use. Official feature documentation describes these workflows, but does not establish that every event is supported on every platform.
Or let it run in the cloud
Alert variations configure how event notifications look; they do not keep a YouTube stream running after your streaming computer is off. For uploaded-video playlists that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
