There is no reliable India-wide break-even price for running a 24/7 YouTube stream on a refurbished desktop versus a cloud VM. The desktop’s total depends on its purchase price, measured power use, local electricity tariff and maintenance; the VM’s depends on compute, storage, possible IP fees and—often materially—outbound data. Compare complete costs for the same stream settings and uptime, not a PC’s purchase price against a VM’s headline rate.
What drives the cost of a 24/7 YouTube stream?
The main variable connecting stream quality to cloud cost is the encoded bitrate: every second the stream runs, it sends data. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these H.264 bitrates for the specified settings:

These are platform ingestion recommendations, not hardware specifications or a guarantee that a particular desktop or VM can encode continuously. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Its guidance also recommends RTMP/RTMPS, CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are calculations from bitrate and elapsed time, before protocol overhead—not published measurements. Actual usage can vary with the configured feed and overhead. For a cloud VM, check whether this outbound transfer is included or billed separately in the specific region you choose.

Estimate the refurbished desktop’s monthly cost
Separate the one-time cash outlay from the monthly equivalent. A practical estimate is:
Monthly desktop cost = (purchase price − expected resale value) ÷ planned ownership months + electricity + maintenance or replacement parts.
Measure average power draw under the actual encoding workload if possible. Then calculate electricity:

- Multiply the measured average watts by 24 hours and 30 days.
- Divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Multiply by your applicable marginal electricity tariff and account for bill adjustments.
For example, use your measured watts as the input rather than assuming that every refurbished desktop draws the same amount. A machine that can play a file is not necessarily capable of encoding your chosen feed continuously; test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate.

There is no single household electricity rate for India. Retail tariffs are set by state electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize domestic consumers. The applicable schedule can depend on the utility, tariff category, consumption slab and bill adjustments. Check your current bill and the tariff schedule for your state and utility rather than using a national average. The Ministry of Power’s tariff-policy material explains the state-level framework; the Central Electricity Authority tariff and duty index lists tariff reports.
Estimate the cloud VM’s complete monthly bill
Start with the VM’s actual hourly price multiplied by the hours it runs, then add every charge required for the planned stream:

- Persistent disk or other storage.
- Public IP, if charged for the selected configuration.
- Outbound data at the chosen region’s rate and allowance.
- Any required GPU, accelerator or managed media-processing service.
- Applicable taxes and billing terms.
Do not treat a VM’s compute price as the complete cost. Google Cloud’s pricing is based on machine type and region; its official Compute Engine pricing page identifies regional pricing, including Mumbai and Delhi, but a stream-specific total still requires the selected machine and network configuration.
Check the provider’s current India-region transfer allowance and egress rate directly. At multi-megabit bitrates, a continuously running stream can use hundreds of gigabytes or multiple terabytes per month, so the transfer allowance can change the comparison substantially.

- Fix the workload. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, source-loop behavior and uptime assumption for both setups.
- Calculate the desktop total. Include the amortized purchase cost, electricity based on measured draw and your local tariff, and a realistic allowance for maintenance or replacement.
- Price the full VM configuration. Include runtime, storage, IP if applicable, egress, encoding resources and taxes for the region and billing terms you will actually use.
- Show first-month cash separately. A desktop may require a larger initial payment even when its amortized monthly estimate looks lower; a VM generally recurs as a service charge.
- Compare operating effort and recovery. Include who will monitor the stream and restore it after a crash, power cut, network outage or encoder failure.
Do not publish or rely on a numeric break-even without a current desktop listing, a specified utility tariff and a dated, complete cloud quote. Those inputs can differ enough to reverse the result.

Check YouTube setup and 24/7 reliability
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a Live server URL and stream key. Its encoder setup instructions explain that software encoders run as computer applications and convert video into a digital format for streaming. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
Before depending on either a home computer or VM, test the chosen feed and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Also test what happens after an encoder restart and a network interruption. A device or VM being capable of running an encoder does not establish that it will recover automatically from a crash or connection loss.
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is an archive rule, not a promise that a 24-hour broadcast or its encoder will remain healthy and available. Plan for stream continuity separately.
