DNS filtering can extend blocking to app connections, but it works at the domain level and will not remove every ad. Start with the platform steps below, then use the troubleshooting checks if a browser or app is still showing ads.
Choose the filtering approach that fits your device
AdGuard uses two distinct kinds of filtering. Content filters inspect web traffic and can target page elements; DNS filtering works with requests for domains and can stop connections to domains on a blocklist. DNS filtering can help with app traffic, but it may not block an ad delivered from the same domain or delivery path as the content you want.

AdGuard’s DNS filtering explanation describes how a filtering DNS server can withhold the address for a blocked domain. Because that decision is made at the domain layer rather than on individual page elements, DNS filtering and browser/app content filtering are not interchangeable.

- Open AdGuard and go to Ad blocking. Confirm protection is on and the filters you want are enabled.
- To review a problem request, open the Filtering log. Find the browser or app request, then create a custom rule to block or allow it as appropriate.
- If you want domain-level filtering as well, open DNS Protection and choose a DNS provider and DNS filters. This is a separate module from Ad blocking.
AdGuard’s Windows features documentation describes the Filtering log and custom rules. Avoid changing advanced settings casually: AdGuard warns that inappropriate changes can affect performance, break the internet connection, or weaken privacy and security.
Set up AdGuard on Android
Start with AdGuard’s browser troubleshooting checks. Menu labels can vary by app version, so follow the closest current in-app label if yours differs.

- Open AdGuard and make sure its main protection switch is on.
- Go to Protection → Ad blocking and enable ad blocking.
- Go to Settings → Filtering → Network → HTTPS filtering and check that HTTPS filtering is enabled for browser traffic.
- Go to Settings → Filtering → Filters → Ad filters → AdGuard Base filter and make sure the base filter is active.
AdGuard says its Android app is not available through Google Play and lists alternative stores and direct APK installation in its official installation instructions. Follow those instructions rather than installing from an unverified source. On Samsung devices running One UI 6 (Android 14) or newer, AdGuard notes that Auto Blocker may interfere with APK installation; consult its device-specific guidance and restore any security setting afterward if the instructions call for it.
Set up AdGuard on iPhone and iPad
AdGuard describes iOS as having limited options for blocking ads outside Safari. For broader filtering, its support guidance recommends trying DNS protection in the AdGuard app.

- Open AdGuard and enable DNS protection.
- Select AdGuard DNS as the DNS server.
- Test the app or connection where ads appeared. If an in-app service remains unfiltered, try its browser version in Safari, where AdGuard’s browser ad-blocking features apply.
AdGuard’s iOS app troubleshooting guidance recommends this DNS route for in-app issues and Safari as an alternative when it does not help. For custom DNS-filter configuration, its DNS setup article describes enabling Advanced mode before configuring DNS protection and filters. Follow its current navigation carefully, and do not change low-level settings unless you understand their effect. The article also notes that when AdGuard DNS or Family DNS is selected, adding the same DNS filter separately is redundant because the filter is already built into those servers.

AdGuard provides DNS-filter setup instructions for Mac as well as Windows, Android, and iOS in its DNS filtering setup guide. Choose the instructions for your operating system and current app version. DNS filtering can cover domain requests beyond a single browser, but it cannot selectively remove every ad element on a page.

AdGuard also documents browser assistance and request-filtering features for its apps, and its extension documentation explains userscript support. A browser extension’s scope remains tied to the browser and app combination; do not assume that adding an extension filters traffic from unrelated installed apps.

Troubleshoot ads that remain
- Protection is off: Check the main protection switch in the AdGuard app.
- Browser ads remain on Android: Confirm Ad blocking, HTTPS filtering, and the AdGuard Base filter are enabled.
- Ads appear in apps or multiple browsers: Consider DNS protection where your platform supports it, while remembering it blocks domains rather than individual ad elements. On iOS, outside-Safari options are limited.
- A site or app stops working: Add the relevant domain or site to the appropriate app or DNS allowlist. If the selected DNS server blocks the domain, an in-app exclusion may not override it; adjust the DNS allowlist or choose a non-filtering DNS server if appropriate. - You need to identify what Windows blocked: Inspect the Filtering log before creating a custom rule so the rule targets the request at issue.
- Problems start after adding DNS filters: Remove inaccurate or overlapping lists. AdGuard warns that excessive or inaccurate DNS filters can make sites malfunction.
