Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can be used as a local encoder for a YouTube stream, but 24/7 operation depends on the exact video source, whether the Pi must re-encode it, sustained cooling, network reliability, and tested recovery behavior. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio, send it from the Pi using YouTube’s ingest settings, then test interruptions and temperature before leaving it unattended. There is no established universal resolution ceiling or guaranteed uptime for every Pi 5 configuration.
What you need before setting up a 24/7 stream
- A Raspberry Pi 5 with a suitable USB-C power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends its 27 W supply and documents a 5 V, 5 A requirement; a 3 A supply limits downstream peripheral current to 600 mA. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
- A video source and software pipeline compatible with that source. A fixed camera or other live local input is different from replaying a prerecorded video; confirm the software supports the source and any overlays or compositing you need.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen video and audio bitrate. Ethernet is a sensible choice for a permanently installed Pi when available, though it cannot prevent an internet service interruption.
- Cooling appropriate to the workload, plus a plan to monitor temperatures and recover from failures.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a private stream key.
Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if it is not already enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Open Live Control Room and create or select a broadcast. Set the title, privacy, and other broadcast details as appropriate.
- Choose the encoder workflow and copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding server and key fields in your streaming software. YouTube’s current steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put it in public code, screenshots, shared configuration files, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
Choose a Pi streaming pipeline for your source
For a simple fixed input
A headless FFmpeg process can be a practical option for a fixed source, provided the installed FFmpeg build and input support the hardware and operating system you are using. A project such as YouTube AutoEncoder illustrates running FFmpeg under systemd and handling recovery concerns. It is an implementation example, not an official YouTube recommendation or proof that another setup will be reliable.

Decide whether to copy or re-encode
If the source already has a format and settings suitable for YouTube, copying the encoded video through the pipeline can avoid the additional CPU work of re-encoding. If it needs resizing, frame-rate changes, compositing, or conversion, the Pi must process it accordingly; re-encoding adds load and heat. Test the precise source and pipeline. Available evidence does not establish a workload-independent maximum resolution or frame rate for continuous Pi 5 encoding.
For production features
If you need multiple inputs, overlays, or hands-on production controls, choose software that supports those functions and verify its compatibility with the Pi’s operating system and graphics or encoding capabilities before building around it. Avoid copying older commands without checking that they match current camera APIs, your FFmpeg build, the input device, and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.

Set YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. It lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for current requirements and formats.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest figures, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. Choose an output bitrate your actual upload can maintain consistently, with room for normal network variation. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewer playback formats, so the Pi does not need to generate every resolution viewers may select.

Power, cooling, and monitoring during long runs
Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best Pi 5 performance. In a heavy CPU stress test reported on October 4, 2023, Raspberry Pi said an uncooled Pi exceeded its 85°C thermal limit and throttled under sustained load; with the Active Cooler in that test, load temperatures were around 60–63°C. Those figures describe Raspberry Pi’s stress-test setup, not a YouTube streaming benchmark. See Raspberry Pi’s explanation of Pi 5 heating and cooling.

Configure recovery instead of assuming 24/7 means unattended
Run the encoder as a managed service that starts at boot and restarts if its process fails. A systemd service can address process crashes and host reboots, but it does not by itself solve every source, network, or YouTube broadcast-state problem.
- Source loss: determine what the encoder does when a camera or input disappears, and verify it resumes when the source returns.
- Network interruption: test whether the encoder reconnects after connectivity returns and whether YouTube accepts that reconnect into the intended broadcast.
- Encoder crash: verify that the supervisor restarts the process and that the stream recovers, rather than merely appearing to run.
- Host reboot: confirm the service starts automatically and reconnects as intended after the Pi comes back online.
- Broadcast lifecycle: check what happens to the YouTube broadcast after encoder disconnection, whether reconnection resumes it or creates a new one, and whether its visibility is what you want.
The recovery behavior shown in YouTube AutoEncoder demonstrates that source loss, encoder failure, network interruption, reboot, and broadcast lifecycle need separate attention. It does not guarantee reliability for a new build.

Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast with representative motion and audio. YouTube advises checking representative content and monitoring its stream health.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages. Confirm the incoming resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate are what you intended.
- Run the system for a representative extended period while monitoring the Pi’s temperature, throttling state, network behavior, and encoder logs.
- Simulate a network interruption and a host reboot. Observe whether the encoder returns, what happens to the YouTube broadcast, and whether the result matches your intended visibility and continuity.
- Record the actual resolution, frame rate, bitrate, temperature, throttling state, and recovery behavior. Do not call a setup 24/7-ready until it has passed the tests relevant to its expected workload.
When a Raspberry Pi is not the right way to keep a stream running
A Pi-hosted encoder makes sense when the stream depends on a local live camera or other local input and you want local control. It also means the Pi, power, cooling, software, and internet connection are part of the stream’s failure path. For prerecorded video that you want to loop continuously, a cloud service avoids leaving a home computer or Pi running. YouTube’s encoder help page identifies cloud services including Gyre and Upstream; check each service’s current availability and terms directly.
