Use music whose rights cover both livestreaming and any archived replay: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt the broadcast even when you have a license.
Before you start
- OBS Studio: Install it and complete its initial configuration. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers scenes, sources, audio, and output settings.
- A playlist that can play on your computer: Choose a player and playlist that can keep playing for the intended broadcast. OBS’s general setup guidance does not prescribe a particular player or a specific looping method.
- A visual for the stream: Prepare a still image, animation, or other visual material to show alongside the music.
- YouTube channel access: You need to create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio and connect OBS using YouTube’s integration or a stream key.
- Music rights for both live and archived use: Confirm the track terms before streaming; a streaming subscription or a “royalty-free” label alone does not establish that YouTube livestreams and archives are covered.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast.
- Set the title, privacy, and other broadcast options for your intended audience.
- Choose whether you want to start the broadcast through YouTube’s controls or OBS’s YouTube integration. The detailed OBS community guide describes both approaches, but it was last updated in 2021, so check the controls in the installed OBS version and current YouTube Studio interface.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, and CBR (constant bitrate). The available choices and labels may depend on the current OBS and YouTube interfaces.

Build the OBS scene and route playlist audio
- In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast.
- Add the visual source you want viewers to see, such as an image or other prepared visual.
- Start the playlist in your chosen local player, then add or select the OBS audio source that captures that player’s sound. The exact source depends on your operating system and audio setup.
- Watch the OBS audio mixer while music plays. The meter for the intended source should move. If it does not, open Settings → Audio and check which input or output devices OBS is using.
- Listen to the audio in a test recording or private test stream. Check that the music is audible and not unintentionally doubled by capturing the same playback through more than one source.
The OBS Quick Start Guide explains adding sources and configuring audio in general; it does not specify a particular playlist player or looping implementation. Confirm that your player will continue through the playlist for the full intended stream.

- Use OBS’s YouTube integration if it is available in your installed version, or select a YouTube RTMPS service and enter the stream key from the YouTube broadcast setup.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
- Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and check that the incoming OBS preview appears before you start publicly.
OBS’s community guide documents RTMPS and stream-key setup, but its interface walkthrough dates to 2021. If a menu name or sequence differs, follow the current OBS and YouTube controls rather than relying on an old label.

Choose a quality your upload can sustain
Measure your available upload capacity and select settings that the connection can reliably maintain. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the current combinations, then set OBS’s output accordingly.
- Prefer a stable connection and sustainable bitrate over a higher setting that causes dropped frames.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and broadcast.
- If OBS reports rising dropped frames, OBS says the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the stream’s demand or address the connection before continuing.
Test, go live, and end the stream
- Run a short test before going public. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream; for a music broadcast, make sure the playlist audio is actually reaching the preview.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. Resolve missing audio, a frozen visual, or connection warnings before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the broadcast using the controls for the workflow you chose. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health while it runs.
- When finished, stop the stream using the current OBS or YouTube controls for that broadcast, then verify in YouTube Studio that it has ended. Scheduled and unscheduled broadcasts can have different start/stop behavior; the OBS community guide describing those differences was last updated in 2021, so verify current behavior in the installed software.
Choose music that can stay up on YouTube
YouTube states that “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the match remains unresolved, the stream may be interrupted or terminated.
Rank #2
For third-party licensed music, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not by itself prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. An archived livestream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Before using a track, check whether the rights cover YouTube live use and archived video, whether allowlisting is required and available, and what attribution is required.

YouTube Audio Library
YouTube Audio Library is available in YouTube Studio and provides searchable, downloadable production music and sound effects. YouTube identifies its Audio Library tracks as copyright-safe. Terms differ by track: Creative Commons tracks require artist attribution in the video description, while the library offers a filter for standard Audio Library tracks that do not require attribution. YouTube says YPP creators may monetize videos using Audio Library tracks and that its copyright-safe downloads will not be claimed by a rights holder through Content ID. YouTube does not vouch for “royalty-free” music from other channels or libraries. See YouTube Audio Library guidance and check the terms shown for the specific track.

Third-party music
Read the actual license for the chosen music rather than relying on a service description. Confirm live-stream and archive permissions, attribution obligations, and the rights owner’s Content ID allowlisting process. If you cannot confirm these points, do not use the track for a continuous broadcast.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No audio meter movement in OBS | The wrong input or output device is selected, or OBS is not capturing the playlist player. | Play the playlist and check Settings → Audio and the selected audio source. Confirm the intended mixer meter moves before streaming. |
| YouTube preview has no music | The playlist audio is not routed into the OBS stream, even if it plays locally. | Check the OBS mixer while the track plays and make a representative test before going public. |
| OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health | The upload connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the chosen bitrate. | Choose a lower-demand resolution, frame rate, or bitrate based on YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and retest. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after a copyright match | YouTube detected third-party content; a license may not have included live-use rights or the channel may not have been allowlisted. | Stop using the matched content and resolve permissions with the rights owner. Confirm live and archive terms and allowlisting before restarting. |
| An archived livestream receives a claim | Content ID may identify material in the replay after the broadcast ends. | Check the track license and claim details; verify that the rights cover the archive as well as the live stream. |
| You cannot find a control described in a guide | The guide’s interface instructions may not match your installed version. | Use the current OBS and YouTube Studio controls. The OBS community walkthrough cited here was last updated in 2021. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube playlist to keep running without leaving a computer at home on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud as a continuous YouTube stream. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
