For a typical fiber setup with a separate ONT, connect an Ethernet cable from the ONT’s Ethernet/LAN port to your router’s WAN/Internet port. Then use the router’s setup app or web page and enter the WAN settings your ISP provides. You do not connect the fiber-optic cable directly to a standard Wi-Fi router. The exact settings depend on your ISP, region and equipment.
Before you connect anything, identify your fiber equipment
Fiber service commonly reaches a home through an optical network terminal (ONT). The ONT converts the fiber connection into Ethernet for a router. Brightspeed says its fiber customers still need the provider’s ONT when using their own router; follow your ISP’s instructions for its particular equipment (Brightspeed: bring your own router).

- Separate ONT: Look for an Ethernet/LAN port on the ONT. This is the usual arrangement for connecting your own router.
- ISP gateway: This combines routing and Wi-Fi, and may already be connected to the ONT. You can sometimes replace its Wi-Fi/router function or add another router behind it, depending on ISP rules and the gateway’s configuration.
- Combined or unfamiliar equipment: Check the equipment labels and ISP instructions before unplugging anything. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH/FTTP) and fiber-to-the-cabinet plus DSL use different connection arrangements; TP-Link’s BT guidance treats them separately (TP-Link: set up Deco/router with BT).
Have an Ethernet cable available for the ONT-to-router connection. The cable type you need depends on the speeds supported by the equipment and the length of the run, so check the port specifications rather than assuming one category fits every installation.
Choose whether to replace the ISP router or add a second one
Replace the ISP Wi-Fi router
This is an option only if your ISP permits it and you have the configuration details required for your line. In TP-Link’s BT FTTP/FTTH example, the router connects to the Openreach ONT and uses PPPoE; BT must provide the credentials and any required VLAN ID. That example is specific to BT in the UK, not a universal configuration.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Keep the ISP gateway and add your own router
Connect the new router to the gateway as its manufacturer and ISP direct. If both devices operate as routers, the network can have double NAT. TP-Link warns that its illustrated Deco-behind-BT-hub arrangement has double NAT when the Deco is in router mode (TP-Link BT setup guidance; TP-Link explanation of double NAT).
Consider access point mode
Access point (AP) mode may avoid double NAT when adding Wi-Fi coverage behind an existing router, but it can remove or limit some advanced router features. Availability and effects vary by model; consult the router’s own documentation before changing modes.

Connect the ONT to the router
- Make sure the ISP has activated the fiber service and that the ONT is powered and connected as instructed.
- Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the ONT’s Ethernet/LAN port and the other into the router’s port labeled WAN or Internet. Do not use a LAN port on the router for the incoming ONT link unless its documentation explicitly says that port can be configured as WAN. Brightspeed and ASUS’s Singtel-specific example show this ONT-to-router Ethernet handoff (Brightspeed connection guidance; ASUS Singtel ONT setup).
- Power the equipment and open the router manufacturer’s app or web-based setup wizard. Follow its prompts for the device and your ISP. Boot order and waiting times are not universal: ASUS’s example recommends a particular power-up sequence for Singtel, which should not be treated as a general fiber requirement.
Enter the WAN settings your ISP specifies
At the Internet or WAN step of setup, select the connection type given by your ISP. TP-Link lists Dynamic IP/IPoE, PPPoE and Static IP as possible types; it says VLAN tagging is needed only when the ISP requires it (TP-Link: configure internet settings).
- Dynamic IP/IPoE: The router obtains its address automatically. You may not need to enter additional WAN fields.
- PPPoE: Enter the username and password supplied by the ISP.
- Static IP: Enter the ISP-provided IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS values.
- VLAN ID: Configure VLAN tagging only if your ISP says it is required, and use the ID it provides. Do not guess or copy settings from another provider, location or service type.
If you are replacing an ISP gateway, ask the provider whether any additional line-specific settings or equipment must remain in place. The correct WAN type, credentials and VLAN requirement cannot be determined without details for your particular connection.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Set Wi-Fi and router administration credentials
Choose a Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and a strong Wi-Fi password in the setup wizard. Also set a separate password for the router’s administrator account: it controls the router’s settings and is not the password devices use to join Wi-Fi. ASUS’s guided setup handles Wi-Fi credentials and router login as separate steps (ASUS Singtel ONT setup example).
Select a current security option supported by your router and the devices you use. The right setting and exact label depend on the router interface, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the model rather than assuming every setup screen is identical.

Test the connection and troubleshoot common failures
Once setup is complete, connect a device and check internet access first over Ethernet, then over Wi-Fi. If either connection fails, work through these checks:

- Check that the ONT and router are powered and that their indicator lights match the equipment instructions.
- Review the WAN type and any PPPoE credentials, static IP values or VLAN ID against the details provided by your ISP.
- Contact the ISP to confirm that service is active and ask for the exact settings required on your line. Brightspeed also advises customers to check the router connection and password as part of setup (Brightspeed setup help).
For a second router behind an ISP gateway, verify whether the new device is meant to run in router mode or AP mode. If the goal is to avoid double NAT, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific gateway/router combination.

Choose a router that matches the service and setup
There is no single best router for every fiber connection. Before buying, check ISP compatibility, the WAN method the router supports, and the speed ratings of its WAN and LAN ports against your subscribed plan. Also confirm whether you need router mode or AP mode and whether the ISP requires you to keep its gateway or other equipment.
Wireless generation and coverage matter too, but the right choice depends on the home and the devices in use. Brightspeed suggests Wi-Fi 5 as a minimum and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E as preferable in its own guidance; those are provider recommendations, not universal requirements (Brightspeed router guidance). A model recommendation would require details such as ISP, plan speed, home layout and feature needs.
