Libby is free to use with a participating library card; Audible is a paid membership with monthly selections or credits and an included catalog, depending on plan. The right choice depends on the exact audiobook you want, whether your library has it and how long you can wait, and whether you want a temporary loan or a title you can keep. Neither service has a universally larger catalog: Libby’s holdings and rules vary by library, while Audible separates included titles from titles you buy with cash or credits.

How Libby and Audible differ

What matters Libby Audible
How you get access Borrow through a library card for a library that offers Libby. The library selects its catalog and sets borrowing rules. Join a paid membership. Standard provides one monthly audiobook selection; Premium provides monthly credits and access to the membership catalog.
What the catalog means The available titles depend on your library’s collection, format availability, and current lending availability. Some titles are in the included catalog; others require a credit or cash purchase. Audible describes its included catalog as thousands of audiobooks, podcasts, and Audible Originals, with titles added weekly.
How long access lasts A borrowed title is temporary and returns automatically on its due date. Included-catalog access requires an eligible active membership and ends if the title leaves the catalog. Titles bought with cash or a credit remain in your library after cancellation.
Limits and timing Your library sets loan and hold limits and offers its own loan periods. You may need to wait for an available copy. Plan terms govern monthly selections, credits, and included access. The exact current offer depends on region and billing channel.

Which audiobooks can you get?

Libby’s catalog is your library’s catalog

Libby provides access to ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines selected by participating libraries. OverDrive describes Libby as offering these formats through library collections, but a broad service-level description does not tell you what any particular library owns. You need a card for each library you want to borrow from, and you can add multiple cards in Libby. See OverDrive’s Libby overview and Libby’s help on adding a library card.

Audible distinguishes included titles from purchases

Audible says its Plus Catalog includes thousands of audiobooks, podcasts, and Audible Originals, with additions weekly. That is Audible’s description of its own catalog, not a like-for-like count against a particular library’s collection. Included titles can be streamed or downloaded for offline listening while access remains eligible; a title page may show an “Included until” notice if a title is scheduled to leave. For details, see Audible’s Plus Catalog help page.

Audible’s Standard plan also offers one credit-free monthly audiobook selection from the collection Audible describes as 1 million titles. That figure is Audible’s plan-description figure, not an independent audit of the catalog. Under Standard, the selected title remains in the Library only while the membership is active. Audible’s Standard membership help page explains the selection and retention terms.

Check the exact title before choosing a service

Search for the audiobook in Libby using the card for the library you plan to use, then check whether it is available to borrow or has a wait list. In Audible, inspect the title page for whether it is included, requires a credit, or is offered for cash; also check for any “Included until” notice. Catalog size alone cannot establish which service has the book you want.

Libby borrowing limits, holds, and loan periods

Limits are set by each library

There is no single Libby-wide borrowing or holds limit. Each library chooses how many items you can borrow and how many holds you can place; audiobooks and ebooks count toward the loan limit. A library may also apply additional restrictions to certain titles. Check your library’s policy in its Libby collection or ask the library directly. Libby explains the variation in its borrowing limits help.

Unavailable audiobooks can be placed on hold

If a title is checked out, you can join its wait list when the library offers holds for that item. When the hold becomes available, you have 72 hours to borrow it, suspend the hold, or cancel it. A suspended hold lets you keep your place while delaying delivery. See Libby’s hold help for the available actions.

Loans expire automatically

At checkout, you can choose among the loan periods your library offers. Eligible loans may be renewed shortly before their due dates, subject to availability and library rules. At the due date, the title returns automatically, so there are no late fees. Details are in Libby’s loan-period and renewal help.

What Audible membership includes—and what it costs

Standard and Premium offer different access

Audible Standard provides one monthly audiobook selection. The selection is credit-free and remains in your Library as long as the Standard membership is active; it is not a permanent purchase retained after cancellation. Audible Premium offers one monthly credit, or two on the two-credit plan, plus access to the included membership catalog. Check the plan available to you before signing up, since availability and terms can vary.

There is no single universal Audible price to quote for every reader. The price shown at checkout depends on the reader’s region, plan, and billing channel; Audible says App Store or Google Play billing may differ from Audible.com prices. Check the live offer through the channel where you intend to subscribe. Audible’s Standard membership help covers the plan and billing-channel distinction.

Credits have expiration rules

Audible’s help says membership credits expire 12 months after they are issued or when the membership is canceled. Credits issued through Apple or Google billing can receive different treatment, so check the applicable terms for your payment channel before canceling or changing a plan. See Audible’s credit help.

What happens when an Audible membership ends?

Purchased titles remain in your library

Audiobooks bought with cash or an Audible credit remain in your Audible library after cancellation. This is different from access to an included-catalog title: included titles stop being available if you cancel or pause an eligible membership, or if Audible removes the title from the catalog.

Standard selections depend on an active membership

A title selected through Audible Standard remains in the Library only for as long as the Standard membership stays active, according to Audible’s Standard membership help. Do not treat a Standard monthly selection as equivalent to a title purchased with cash or a credit.

Which service should you choose?

Choose Libby if a library has the title and the timing works

  • You have a participating library card and want to borrow without an Audible subscription.
  • Your library has the audiobook, and it is available now or its wait is acceptable.
  • You are comfortable with the library’s loan period and automatic return rather than keeping the title.

Choose Audible based on the access type you need

  • You want immediate access to a specific title and Audible offers it through your plan, for a credit, or for cash.
  • You value the included catalog and are comfortable with access depending on an active eligible membership and titles remaining included.
  • You want a lasting library copy: verify that the audiobook is a cash or credit purchase, not merely included or selected under Standard.

A quick way to compare a title

  1. Search Libby with your library card. Confirm the audiobook format, whether it is available, and any displayed wait estimate.
  2. Check your library’s borrowing terms. Look up its current loan and hold limits and the available loan periods.
  3. Search Audible for the same edition. Identify whether the title is included, requires a credit, or costs cash, and look for an “Included until” notice.
  4. Compare what you pay and keep. Check Audible’s checkout price for your region and payment channel, and distinguish purchases from membership-dependent access.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
