Software uses that information to locate the robot, build a representation of its surroundings and plan a route. Obstacle avoidance is related, but it may use a separate sensor or recognition system; the exact setup depends on the model.
How a robot vacuum builds a room map
A robot gathers information about nearby walls and objects while tracking how it moves. Its navigation software uses those observations to estimate its position and assemble a map it can use to plan and follow cleaning routes. Manufacturers use different combinations of cameras, lasers or LiDAR, infrared and other sensors, so there is no single mapping system shared by every robot.

LiDAR measures distances from reflected laser beams. As one example, iRobot’s ClearView LiDAR guide explains that its system sends laser beams to measure distances and build a home map. A robot can use this spatial information to navigate systematically, and supported apps may let owners select rooms to clean.
How obstacle avoidance differs from mapping
A map describes the robot’s estimate of its surroundings; recognizing a nearby cord, shoe or other small object is a different task. Some models use distinct sensors or features for these jobs, and a robot that maps a room should not automatically be assumed to recognize small objects.

For a model-specific example, Roborock says its Qrevo CurvX combines structured light and an RGB camera for object recognition with a retractable LiDAR navigation system. That is the manufacturer’s description of this model, not evidence that all robot vacuums work the same way or that it outperforms other designs. See the Qrevo CurvX product page for its stated features.
What you can do with the map
Where the model supports it, the companion app may let you edit room boundaries, rename rooms, merge or split them, choose areas to clean, or draw no-go zones. Roborock describes map and cleaning controls in its app feature guide. Available controls differ by product, app and region, so check the model’s support information before relying on a particular feature.
A map is a navigation aid, not proof that the robot entered or cleaned every area it depicts. It may register a space visible through glass or a stairwell edge even though the robot cannot physically reach it.

Why a robot vacuum’s map can be wrong or incomplete
Closed doors or an interrupted run
If a door is shut during mapping, the robot may not observe the room behind it. An interrupted run can also leave the map unfinished. For a supported initial mapping run, iRobot advises opening doors to the spaces to be mapped and removing obstacles that could disrupt the process in its ClearView LiDAR Maps guide. Pick up cords and items that could snag the robot; general clutter does not necessarily stop LiDAR from mapping a space, but an entanglement can interrupt the run.
Reflective surfaces
Mirrors, windows and shiny furniture can reflect or scatter LiDAR beams. iRobot warns that this may lead to less accurate navigation, missed areas, false barriers or confusing layouts. Depending on the floor plan and the robot’s supported controls, a physical boundary marker or an app keep-out zone may help constrain where it travels.
Visible but unreachable areas
A robot may map an area it can see without being able to enter it, such as a space beyond a glass doorway or the area below a stair edge. Treat the map as the robot’s sensed representation of the home, not a record confirming where it physically cleaned.

How to choose a robot vacuum for mapping and avoidance
Compare the specific model’s capabilities rather than relying on a broad label such as “smart navigation.” Useful questions include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Which sensors does it use for navigation, and does it use a separate system for recognizing objects?
- Can its app edit rooms, define no-go zones and support multiple floor maps?
- What limitations does the manufacturer state for dim light, reflective surfaces or small objects on the floor?
- Does the product documentation explain what its object-avoidance features detect and how they work?
Manufacturer feature pages can establish what a particular model claims to offer, but the available official information does not establish a single most accurate brand or sensor type through independent head-to-head testing. Avoid treating advertised object counts as proof of real-world superiority.
Camera privacy controls are feature-specific
Some obstacle-recognition systems use cameras, but camera functions and privacy options vary by manufacturer and model. For example, iRobot documents an optional obstacle-image review setting for its own feature. Its explanation should not be generalized to other brands; consult the relevant model’s privacy documentation and app settings. See iRobot’s Obstacle Image Review opt-in guide.
