Set up a new VPS in this order: confirm the provider’s first-login instructions, secure administrator access, restrict inbound network traffic, arrange backups, and only then install your workload. The exact username and connection method depend on the provider and operating-system image, so follow the instructions for the instance you actually created.
What to check before connecting
A VPS is a virtual machine hosted by a provider that you administer. The provider provisions the machine and supplies or documents how to connect; it does not mean every VPS starts with the same account or root-login settings. For example, OVHcloud documents a provider-created ubuntu account for its Ubuntu image. DigitalOcean’s recommended Droplet setup describes SSH-key handling for its selected configuration. Neither example should be assumed to apply to a different provider or image.

Before opening an SSH session, identify the server address and the documented username, authentication method, and any provider console or recovery route. Keep the provider’s instructions for regaining access available while making changes.
Secure access before installing applications
DigitalOcean recommends configuring a sudo-capable non-root user for administration, using SSH keys, and disabling password-based root access in its Ubuntu Droplet baseline. Treat these as provider-specific recommendations, not universal instructions for every VPS image. Follow your provider’s documented procedure and verify the new access works before closing an existing session or changing the only working login path.

Restrict network access
Use the provider’s firewall controls to allow only connections your administration and intended workload require. DigitalOcean specifically recommends restricting SSH access with its cloud firewall. The exact rules depend on the provider and the services you plan to run; do not copy a generic port list without confirming what your server needs.

- Add application ports only when the application is installed and needs to receive traffic.
- Keep a documented recovery or console route available in case a firewall change blocks your normal connection.
Plan backups and recovery
Arrange automatic backups or an equivalent recovery plan before the VPS contains data you cannot afford to lose. DigitalOcean recommends automatic backups for emergency protection. Before relying on any provider’s backup feature, check what it covers, how long backups are retained, how restoration works, and the applicable plan terms. A backup is useful only if you understand how to restore from it.
Update the system and install your workload
Once access, network exposure, and recovery are addressed, use the official instructions for the exact operating-system version on your VPS to update packages and configure the software you intend to run. Package commands, firewall tools, DNS configuration, TLS setup, and application deployment differ by distribution and workload; there is no single command sequence established here that is correct for every VPS.
Choose the OS version first, then consult its official documentation for system updates and the relevant firewall and application instructions. Add only the services your workload needs, and open their corresponding network access deliberately.
Choosing a provider or image
Compare concrete setup and administration differences rather than assuming one provider is best for everyone. Useful questions include:
- What username and connection method does this provider’s chosen image require?
- Can you add an SSH key during provisioning, and what is the documented recovery route?
- What firewall controls are available, including restrictions on management access?
- What backup options, retention, and restore steps apply to the plan?
- How much operating-system and server administration are you prepared to handle yourself?
