How to Create a Landing Page That Converts

A useful landing page carries the visitor’s promise through to a clear action, works across devices, and is improved using measured results—not conversion guarantees.

A landing page is more likely to help visitors act when it keeps the promise that brought them there, makes the next step obvious, and works well on the devices they use. Build around one defined action, then check both the page experience and the results you measure. These practices can improve clarity and usability; they do not guarantee a particular conversion rate.

Start with the visitor’s intent and one next step

Write down what brought someone to the page and what you want them to do: purchase, inquire, call, or sign up. The page should serve that purpose rather than competing with several unrelated goals.

For paid search, carry the offer and language from the ad and keyword context into the destination. Google Ads advises: “Choose a landing page that closely matches your ad and keywords.” It also recommends mirroring the ad’s call to action—for example, a signup ad should lead to a page where signing up is a clear, prominent option. A visitor who cannot find what the ad promised may leave without taking action. Google Ads landing page guidance

Make the offer and action easy to understand

State plainly what the product or service is, who it is for, and what the visitor can do next. Put important information near the top so people do not have to search for the offer or the action. Remove clutter that distracts from the task, but include useful, original details that help someone decide.

Choose supporting information based on the questions a visitor needs answered before acting. If you use customer reviews, present genuine opinions; invented testimonials are not proof. Google Ads recommends clear, useful landing-page content and making the desired action quick and easy to find. Google Ads landing page guidance

Design for mobile and accessible use

Make the page readable at narrow viewport widths, keep navigation simple, and ensure the main action and a useful contact route are easy to locate. Mobile usability is part of the core page, not a final cosmetic pass: a cramped layout or hard-to-use form can obstruct the very action the page is meant to support.

Accessibility practices help people using different devices and input methods reach the same content and controls. W3C WAI recommends making interactive elements visually distinct, supporting keyboard operation with visible focus, adapting presentation to different viewport sizes, and providing alternatives for relevant non-text media, such as captions or transcripts. These practices improve access, but following this list alone does not establish legal compliance. W3C WAI tips for designing

For context, Google/Ipsos reported that 81% of smartphone users were more likely to purchase from companies whose mobile sites or apps helped them easily find what they were looking for. That figure came from the US Playbook Omnibus 2019 survey, fielded in January 2019 among 1,610 online smartphone users aged 18 and older. It is a mobile-shopping finding, not a landing-page experiment or a conversion-rate estimate. Google/Ipsos mobile-shopping findings

Check performance with field data

Google’s Core Web Vitals are user-centered performance measures: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) concerns loading, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) concerns interactivity, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) concerns visual stability. Google’s current recommended “good” thresholds are assessed at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop:

Metric What it measures Good threshold
LCP Loading performance 2.5 seconds or less
INP Responsiveness to interactions 200 milliseconds or less
CLS Visual stability 0.1 or less

Use real-user monitoring or other field data to understand how actual devices and network conditions experience the page. Lab tools are valuable while developing and for catching regressions before release, but they cannot replace field measurement. Google’s Web Vitals guidance

Good Core Web Vitals scores do not guarantee a top search position. Google says page experience involves more than those scores, so treat the metrics as experience checks, not a ranking promise or a prediction of conversions. Google Search Central on page experience

Measure the action, then iterate

Define the outcome that matters—such as a completed purchase, submitted inquiry, call, or signup—and instrument it so you can review page-level results over time. Analytics can show which landing pages turn ad clicks into sales, but measurement is useful only when the tracked action matches the page’s purpose. Google Ads landing page guidance

If visitors arrive but do not take the intended action, check the path in this order:

  1. Confirm that the source promise, page offer, and call to action agree.
  2. Check whether the offer and action are easy to find and understand.
  3. Review the page on phone screens and check keyboard access, visible focus, and other relevant accessibility needs.
  4. Inspect field performance and analytics for the defined action.
  5. Where practical, change one meaningful element at a time and compare the same outcome over a consistent period.

Do not claim a causal improvement unless the evidence supports it. There is no universal conversion benchmark or guaranteed lift established by the cited guidance; page length and form-field choices should be based on the audience, offer, and measured behavior.
