A smartwatch complication sits directly on a supported watch face, beside the time. A widget or tile lives on a separate glanceable surface that you open or swipe to. The names vary by platform: Apple Watch uses Smart Stack for its widget surface, while Wear OS calls its swipe-accessed panels Tiles.
At a glance: where each one appears
| Feature | Complication | Separate glanceable surface |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | In a designated position on a supported watch face, visible with the time. | In Apple Watch’s Smart Stack, or among Wear OS Tiles reached by swiping from the face. |
| How you reach it | It is already on the face; tapping it commonly opens related app functionality. | Open or swipe to the stack or Tile, then view its information or use an available action. |
| Typical role | A small, persistent piece of information or a focused shortcut. | A browsable panel for glanceable information and actions, including cases that need more information than fits in a complication. |
| How the platform names it | Apple and Wear OS both use “complication.” | Apple calls its grouped surface Smart Stack and its items widgets; Wear OS calls its separate panels Tiles. |
What a complication does
A complication uses a slot on a compatible watch face to show a small piece of information or provide a shortcut. On Apple Watch, examples include weather or stock information. Most Apple Watch complications can be tapped to open an app, and some show app information at a glance. Third-party App Store apps may also provide complications. Apple Support’s guide to watch faces and complications explains that the positions and choices available depend on the selected face.
On Wear OS, a complication is also a glanceable element placed on a watch face. Tapping one can open app details or perform a focused action. Its data and its appearance are separate: a data source supplies information, while the face decides how to render it. Face designers determine which slots and data types a face supports, so the available choices depend on both the face and its data sources. Android Developers’ Wear OS complication documentation describes this model.
What Apple Watch widgets and Wear OS Tiles do
Apple Watch: widgets in the Smart Stack
The Smart Stack is separate from the watch face. It can suggest information or actions based on context such as the time, location, or recent activity, and it can show Live Activities. Users can add, remove, reorder, and pin widgets; some widgets can also be customized. Apple Support’s Smart Stack guide describes those features. A Smart Stack widget is therefore not just another name for a complication: it appears in a different place and is reached by opening the stack.

Wear OS: Tiles
Wear OS documentation calls its separate swipe-accessed panels Tiles, not widgets. Users choose which Tiles to see and swipe to them from the watch face. Android Developers says Tiles provide quick access to glanceable information and actions, and that they can suit cases where more information is needed than fits in a complication. Android Developers’ Wear OS interaction guidance explains the distinction.
Which should you use?
- Choose a complication for information you want visible without leaving the face, or for a shortcut you expect to tap often.
- Use the Smart Stack or a Tile for information or actions you are willing to browse into, especially when a panel needs more room than a face slot provides.
- Check what your watch supports. Available positions, data types, widgets, and Tiles depend on the watch face, apps, model, and installed software. The feature’s name alone does not guarantee it is available on every watch.
Why the terms are easy to confuse
Both complications and separate panels help bring information or actions closer to the user, so they can seem similar in purpose. The practical difference is their surface: complications occupy watch-face positions; Smart Stack widgets and Wear OS Tiles are browsed separately. The terminology is platform-specific, too: Apple uses “widget” for Smart Stack items, whereas Wear OS documentation calls its panels “Tiles.”
