Before your robot vacuum and mop cleans, inspect it, place and charge its dock, clear the floor, and connect the app if required. Then follow the exact model’s guide for mapping, mop setup, and approved liquids: these steps differ by device, and using the wrong fluid or sending a wet mop over a rug can cause problems.
Before you start: check the exact model’s guide
Find the quick-start guide or manual for your robot’s exact model before filling its tank, choosing a cleaning solution, or selecting a mop mode. Designs vary: some robots map without cleaning, others map during a cleaning pass; some have onboard water tanks, while others use a dock; and mop pads may be washable or disposable. The examples below illustrate those differences, not a universal workflow.

Prepare the robot, dock, and floor
- Unbox and inspect the robot. Remove packaging and protective film, including film covering sensors. Install only the parts identified in the model’s guide. Samsung advises removing protective film and packaging from the Jetbot Mop, while BISSELL’s SpinWave R5 instructions also call for removing black foam bumper guards.
- Place the dock as directed. Use the location and clearance specified in your manual, on the required surface and within Wi-Fi range if the robot needs a network connection. For the SpinWave R5, BISSELL specifies a hard floor, placement against a wall, and 1 m (40 in) of clear space around the dock. That clearance applies to this model, not to all robot vacuums.
- Charge and pair the robot. Align it with the dock or connect the supplied adapter as the guide directs. Charging requirements are model-specific: Xiaomi recommends fully charging the H50 before cleaning or mapping; BISSELL specifies a 4–5-hour first charge for SpinWave R5 model 3377; Samsung says to charge the Jetbot Mop until its LED turns off. If the robot uses an app, follow its current pairing instructions.
- Clear the route. Pick up cords and loose items that could tangle in the brushes or block the robot. Open the doors to rooms you want included. Xiaomi recommends staying with the H50 during quick mapping and keeping intended rooms open.
Choose the first-run path your robot supports
Mapping and cleaning are not always separate jobs. Check the app and manual for the available mode and recommended order.

Set up mopping without risking floors or the robot
- Fit the correct mop assembly. Attach the pad or assembly specified for your model, and confirm whether it should be installed before or after the first vacuum run.
- Use only the liquid the manufacturer allows. Fill to the marked level, if applicable. There is no safe, universal detergent recommendation: BISSELL’s SpinWave R5 guide includes water and a BISSELL formula fill line; ECOVACS says to use water only for the OZMO 920/950/T5, warning that other fluids or wax can gum up the water-emitting nozzles; and iRobot warns Roomba 100/1000 Combo owners against hot water, detergent, or disinfectant.
- Keep wet mopping off rugs unless the model supports your route. Remove rugs from the intended mopping area or use a map restriction or physical barrier. The Roomba 100/1000 Combo does not lift its mop pad to cross rugs, and iRobot recommends removing rugs from the area being mopped. Xiaomi’s Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Ultra instructions recommend barriers or app restricted areas to keep the robot out of carpeted areas. Carpet detection and avoidance are not the same on every model.
Start the run and watch what the robot does
Start from the dock, or use the starting procedure in the manual. During this first run, check that the robot enters the rooms you intended, handles thresholds, stays within the route you planned, and returns as expected. If mopping, confirm that the pad dampens the intended hard-floor area. Mapping may be a separate run or part of cleaning, depending on the model; observe the behavior rather than assuming a particular feature.

Clean and store the mop parts after the run
Follow the manual for removing and caring for the mop assembly. Depending on the model, you may need to empty remaining water, wash and dry the pad, or replace a disposable pad. Xiaomi says to remove the Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Ultra mopping assembly when charging or not in use, pour out remaining water, and clean the pad. iRobot says to empty the Roomba 100/1000 Combo tank and replace the pad after the job. Samsung instructs Jetbot Mop owners to drain the water supply kits and wash and dry the pads.
