You can start reducing your carbon footprint without buying new equipment: use less energy, avoid unnecessary travel and prevent waste. Which changes matter most depends on your home, local electricity supply, travel options and current habits, so begin by identifying where your emissions come from.
Where do household and workplace emissions come from?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) groups household emissions into three areas: home energy, transportation and waste. Its household carbon footprint calculator estimates those sources using details such as household size and ZIP code. Its averages are rough; a year of your own utility and travel data can give you a more relevant starting point.

Electricity-related emissions depend on how much power you use and the sources supplying it. Heating emissions also depend on your fuel, equipment efficiency, home size and insulation. At work, the picture may include building energy, company vehicles, business travel and employee commuting.
There is no universal percentage reduction for any of the steps below. The result depends on your starting point and local conditions. EPA notes that “Focusing on efficiency and minimizing waste are especially cost-effective.”

How can you cut home energy use without replacing appliances?
Start with controls and upkeep you already have. These steps cost little or nothing, though comfort, health needs and building conditions should guide how you use them.
- Adjust the thermostat. For U.S. households, EPA’s energy guidance cites Department of Energy advice to set it to 68–70°F while at home in winter, and lower it by 8–10°F when asleep or away. Treat this as U.S. guidance, not a universal comfort or health rule.
- Turn off lights in empty rooms and unplug electronics when they are not in use, where practical.
- Use window shades. Adjusting them can help reduce heating and cooling needs.
- Seal drafts and maintain heating and cooling equipment. Proper sealing and insulation can help limit energy loss. Check what a drafty opening needs before buying materials; installation requirements vary.
EPA’s energy page says a typical household spends nearly $1,900 a year on energy bills and estimates that ENERGY STAR can save 24%, or about $450, on those bills. These are EPA-published estimates, not guaranteed savings for an individual home; the page says the exact amount depends on improvements.
Can changing your electricity supply help?
If your utility offers a green power option, check its terms and availability before enrolling. The effect depends on your location and supplier. EPA’s Power Profiler can help you see the emissions profile of electricity in your area.

If you rent or cannot choose a supplier, focus on reducing energy use through the controls and maintenance available to you. Some changes, such as insulation or equipment work, may require a landlord’s approval.
What everyday travel changes can reduce fuel use?
Choose an alternative to driving alone when it fits your route and local options. EPA recommends walking, biking, public transportation and carpooling where available. You can also group errands into fewer trips and telework when your job allows it.
These options are not equally practical for everyone. Consider distance, transit service, schedule, accessibility and safety rather than treating any single mode as a universal answer.

How can you reduce waste at home?
Preventing waste is generally a better first move than relying on recycling. EPA’s order is refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, then recycle when the earlier options are not possible. Buy used when it makes sense, reuse containers and repair items that can be fixed. Follow your local recycling rules, since accepted materials vary.
Plan food before it becomes waste
Buy only what you expect to use, shop with a plan and donate unused food when appropriate. EPA says food waste is the largest category of material in municipal landfill waste, where it emits methane. That does not mean every food scrap goes to landfill in every locality. Preventing edible food from being wasted is the priority; compost scraps if local collection or home composting is practical.
What can you change at work?
For an office or small organization, begin with visible energy use and everyday purchasing. EPA’s organizational guidance is designed for U.S.-based operations, including offices, small businesses and public institutions. The guide identifies building heating and cooling, fleet vehicles, electricity and employee travel as common areas to examine.

Make low-cost shared practices easy
- Save documents digitally instead of printing them when a paper copy is not needed.
- Create an office supply swap so usable items can be reused before new supplies are purchased.
- Look for opportunities to reduce building energy use, including efficient office equipment and available green power options.
- Consider commuter benefits or practical alternatives such as carpooling, transit, biking or walking where employees have access to them.
EPA’s workplace waste guidance puts the printing advice simply: “Save documents to your drive instead of printing them.” These practices reduce waste, but they do not replace measuring energy or travel sources.
Track organizational emissions with clear boundaries
EPA’s 2022 organizational guide recommends defining organizational and operational boundaries, documenting methods, building an inventory, setting a target and tracking progress over time. Keep the accounting boundary consistent so year-to-year comparisons mean something.
- Scope 1: direct emissions from sources the organization owns or controls, such as boilers and fleets.
- Scope 2: emissions associated with purchased electricity, heat or steam.
- Scope 3: other indirect sources, including business travel and employee commuting.
A small office may not control every scope 3 source, such as how employees commute. Record what is within the chosen boundary and distinguish it from sources the organization can only influence.

How should you choose what to do first?
Match the action to your largest visible source and the control you actually have. Utility bills, fuel purchases and travel records are more useful for tracking your own changes than national averages, which are only a starting point.
- If home energy stands out: start with thermostat settings, shades, lights, electronics, draft sealing and maintenance.
- If driving dominates: try trip grouping, telework or an available shared or active travel option.
- If waste is a concern: prevent food waste and reuse or repair items before recycling.
- If you are acting at work: identify the energy and travel sources the organization can measure, assign responsibility and review the same measures over time.
Local electricity mix, transit access, building condition, waste services and supplier choices all affect what is feasible. A small change you can sustain and track is more useful than a promise of a fixed reduction that does not fit your circumstances.
