To judge whether a solar panel efficiency claim means anything, verify the exact module model, the test conditions, and the area used in the calculation. Then treat efficiency, rated watts, expected energy production, and long-term degradation as separate measures: one percentage cannot answer all four questions.
What a solar panel efficiency percentage measures
At standard test conditions (STC), module efficiency is the module’s maximum electrical power divided by the reference sunlight falling on its area. The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) describes the reference irradiance as 1,000 W/m². In simplified form: efficiency = Pmax ÷ (irradiance × area). The result is a percentage of the incoming solar power converted to electrical power under those reference conditions. See the JRC’s 2018 report on photovoltaic performance assessment.

The area in that calculation matters. Depending on the stated convention, it may be the module’s total area or a defined aperture area. A percentage calculated using one basis is not necessarily comparable with a percentage using the other, so a credible claim or datasheet should make the basis clear. The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) notes the area conventions used for entries in its champion module efficiency chart.
Check the claim against these five points
- Exact model: Find the manufacturer and complete module model number in the claim, datasheet, or test report. A percentage without an identifiable product is difficult to verify. Look for maximum power (Pmax) in watts as well as efficiency.
- Reference conditions: Check whether the rating is stated at STC. Compare figures only when irradiance, cell or module temperature, and reference spectrum are compatible, or when the differences are explicitly explained. NLR’s standardized chart entries use a 25°C reference temperature; that is a detail of the chart’s measurement basis, not a substitute for checking the conditions behind another seller’s claim.
- Area convention: Determine whether the percentage uses total module area or aperture area. Do not assume two percentages are directly comparable if their area bases differ or one is unstated.
- Independent evidence: Look for a test report from a recognized laboratory or a relevant standardized chart entry. NLR says its champion-chart results are independently confirmed by recognized laboratories and reported on a standardized basis. The chart covers champion results, however; appearing on it is not independent verification of every commercial panel claim.
- Operating-condition data: If you need to know how a module may perform outside the reference test, seek measurements across irradiance and temperature rather than relying on its STC percentage. NLR’s System Advisor Model (SAM) documentation describes an IEC 61853 test matrix spanning 23 operating conditions and explains the inputs used by its IEC-based module model. SAM does not provide a library of IEC test-result parameters for this model, so the necessary data must come from a manufacturer or testing laboratory. See the SAM module-model documentation.
Efficiency, rated watts, and energy yield are different claims
Efficiency is not the same as rated power
Efficiency is a normalized ratio involving power, irradiance, and area. Pmax is the module’s rated maximum power in watts under its stated reference conditions. A smaller module can have a higher efficiency percentage yet a lower watt rating than a larger one. Compare the percentage, Pmax, and physical dimensions rather than treating any one as a proxy for the others.

STC efficiency is not a site forecast
Actual output depends on conditions such as sunlight intensity, module temperature, incidence angle, spectrum, mounting, and local climate. IEC 61853 addresses performance measurement and energy rating across operating conditions. The current IEC publication page for IEC 61853-2:2026 describes procedures relating to incidence angle, operating temperature under specified ambient and mounting conditions, and spectral responsivity.
Annual energy yield needs broader evidence
Energy yield is an estimate or measurement of energy produced over time, accounting for changing irradiance, temperature, and climate conditions. It is a different question from how efficiently a module converts light under STC. For a site-specific comparison, look for a climate-based estimate using relevant module performance data and the installation conditions; a headline efficiency percentage alone cannot establish annual kilowatt-hours.

Use degradation and warranty evidence separately
An initial efficiency rating does not establish how a module will perform over its service life. NLR’s PV Lifetime Project says photovoltaic modules often lose less than 1% of performance per year as a general description, not as a guarantee for a particular product. The project also notes that early degradation can be difficult to distinguish from measurement uncertainty without careful measurement. See the PV Lifetime Project.
For a long-term claim, examine the product’s degradation data, the measurement period and method, and the warranty terms independently of its initial STC efficiency. A warranty is a contractual commitment; it is not, by itself, measured evidence of a particular module’s field performance.

A practical comparison checklist
- Match the exact model numbers, not just brand names or product families.
- Confirm equivalent STC conditions and the same area convention.
- Compare efficiency alongside Pmax and module dimensions.
- For expected production, use performance data across irradiance and temperature and an estimate relevant to the installation’s climate and mounting.
- Assess degradation and warranty terms as separate long-term questions.
- Use independent laboratory evidence where available, while checking what product or chart entry that evidence actually covers.
NLR’s chart is a useful reference for independently confirmed champion-module results, but it is not a directory that verifies all market claims. SAM can model IEC-based performance when the required test parameters are available; its documentation says users need to obtain those parameters from a manufacturer or laboratory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a meaningful claim should let you verify
A useful efficiency claim identifies the product and its rating basis well enough for you to check the percentage against a datasheet or test evidence. If the claim omits the model, conditions, or area convention, it does not support a reliable apples-to-apples comparison. Even a well-documented STC figure answers only the controlled-condition efficiency question—not which panel will deliver the most power, annual energy, or lifetime output in a particular installation.
