How to Set Up a Robot Vacuum and Map Your Home

Set up your robot vacuum, run its first mapping cycle from the dock, and check the map in the app—with model-specific guidance for pairing and features.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up a robot vacuum and map your home, install the manufacturer’s app, pair the robot using its model-specific instructions, prepare the rooms you want it to map, and start its first mapping run from the dock or base. Let the robot finish and return to its base, then review and edit the map in the app. Exact pairing steps and mapping features vary by model.

Before you start

  • Unbox the robot and dock, remove packaging, and place the dock as the manufacturer’s manual directs. The sources recommend starting from the base but do not establish a universal clearance measurement or ideal location.
  • Charge or position the robot as its manufacturer instructs; charging requirements differ by model.
  • Install the manufacturer’s app and have the robot ready to pair. Use the current instructions for your model for network and account requirements; there is no universal Wi-Fi-band requirement established here.
  • Open the doors to rooms you want included in the map and clear loose items or obstacles that could block the robot.

Connect the robot and make the first map

  1. Pair it in the app. Follow the app’s prompts and your model’s setup instructions. ECOVACS, for example, advises connecting the robot to its app before mapping (ECOVACS first-map and Quick Mapping guidance).
  2. Start from the dock or base. Choose the mapping option available for your model. Some products have a dedicated quick-map mode; others build a map during an automatic cleaning cycle. Roborock’s preparation guidance says, “Robot starts from dock.” (Roborock home-preparation guidance)
  3. Let the run finish. Keep the dock in place and allow the robot to return to it. For the Roborock workflow described in its support instructions, map-saving mode must be enabled for the map to save.
  4. Review the result in the app. Compare the map with your actual home, then use the app’s supported tools to correct room divisions or labels and add restricted zones where needed. Check the map before relying on those zones.

Edit the map and check feature support

Room editing, room labels, no-go or keep-out zones, and other map controls are not available on every robot. Roborock describes map editing and no-go zones in its app feature overview. iRobot says Smart Map customization depends on the robot, app or software, and region; check the iRobot mapping-feature compatibility information for the exact product. Do not assume a model can save multiple floors, merge rooms, or retain zones after a reset unless its current documentation confirms it.

If the map is incomplete or incorrect

A room is missing

Check whether its door was open during the run and whether the robot could pass through the entrance. Clear anything that might have blocked its route. If the room is still absent, follow the model’s instructions for editing or remapping; recovery steps are not universal.

The map was not saved or zones are unavailable

Confirm that the robot supports saved maps and the zone feature you want, and check the relevant app settings. Roborock’s cited workflow specifically requires map-saving mode. For iRobot, feature availability depends on the specific model, software, and region.

The map does not match the home

Inspect it in the app and use the manufacturer’s editing or remapping instructions. Do not assume that deleting or resetting a map preserves customized rooms or restricted zones.

For robot vacuum-and-mop combinations

Use the mapping guidance for the exact model and mode. ECOVACS says its first-map guidance does not recommend attaching mop-pad plates in certain vacuum-and-mop or mopping modes because the robot may not go over carpets. That instruction is specific to the relevant ECOVACS products and modes, not a general rule for all combination robots. See ECOVACS’ first-map guidance.
