Robot vacuum mapping saves a layout of explored areas so compatible models can clean selected rooms and use map-based boundaries. Room settings let you adjust room divisions and target specific rooms; no-go zones and virtual walls mark places or passages to avoid. Exact features and steps depend on the vacuum, firmware, and companion app.
What mapping does
A map is the app’s representation of the area a robot has explored. On models that support map saving, the layout can be retained for later tasks such as selecting rooms or editing boundaries. Mapping is therefore the foundation for other map-based controls, not a guarantee that every robot has the same features.

For example, Roborock’s S6 instructions tell users to enable Map Saving and review the resulting room layout. Tapo says its robot creates a map before its first cleaning and offers map editing in its map guide. These examples apply to the named product families, not every robot vacuum.
What room settings do
Room settings make a saved map more useful for targeted cleaning. If the robot has divided the floor incorrectly, map editing can let you combine or divide areas to better match the actual rooms. Room selection then lets you choose one or more mapped rooms instead of starting a whole-home cleaning run.

On supported Tapo robot vacuums, the manufacturer documents support for up to 32 rooms. That is a Tapo-specific limit, not a general maximum for robot vacuums. Roborock’s S6 guide describes editing room divisions and using Room Mode to select rooms.
What no-go zones and virtual walls do
- No-go zone: An area marked on the map that the robot should avoid.
- Virtual wall: A mapped boundary that blocks a passage or section, on models that offer this control.
Depending on model support, these controls can help keep a robot away from pet bowls, clutter, carpet, or a spot where it repeatedly has trouble navigating. TP-Link describes rectangular zones for these kinds of use. Not every vacuum offers both zone shapes or virtual walls. Roborock’s S5 instructions state a limit of up to 10 no-go zones for that model’s instructions; do not assume the same limit applies to other models.

What to compare when choosing a robot vacuum
Check documentation for the exact model rather than assuming that features are standard across a brand or category. If these controls matter to you, verify whether the model supports:
- Saved maps, including multi-floor maps if you need them.
- Room editing and room selection for targeted cleaning.
- No-go zones and virtual walls.
- No-mop zones if you are considering a vacuum-mop combination.
- The app controls and model-specific limits you expect to use.
Manufacturers document differing controls, but the cited support information does not rank brands or establish current product availability.
