Book Repair vs. Digitization: Which Preservation Method Is Right?

Repair can stabilize a book; digitization can improve access. Learn how condition, significance, use, and imaging risk determine the right next step.

Book repair and digitization solve different problems: repair can stabilize a physical volume, while digitization creates a copy for access. A digital file does not repair the original, and scanning can put a fragile book at risk. Choose based on the book’s condition and significance, how often it is used, and whether it can be imaged safely.

What each preservation method does

Repair treats the physical book

Conservation treatment addresses the condition of the object. Depending on the damage, a conservator may stabilize a binding feature or mend a tear that could worsen during handling. Stabilization is preparation for safer handling, not necessarily a full restoration. The Library of Congress describes examples in its stabilization and storage-enclosure guidance.

Digitization creates an access copy

Digitization captures images of a book so people can consult its content without relying as much on the original. It does not restore the book or stop its deterioration. Imaging itself involves handling, so its effect on the original needs to be considered before a project begins. The Library of Congress’s digitization guidelines recommend planning for the project’s purpose, audience, presentation, and the original’s safety, as well as storage and access for the resulting files.

Preventive care may be enough

Storage and careful handling can reduce risk without altering a book. For an infrequently used collector’s item, the Library of Congress suggests leaving it as-is, boxing it, and improving its storage conditions rather than treating it unnecessarily. See its books FAQ.

How to choose the right next step

Situation Practical next step Reason
The book is valuable or intrinsically significant, damage is worsening, it is handled often, or the case is complicated. Consult a trained conservator and discuss whether stabilization or treatment should come before imaging. The Library of Congress flags these circumstances for professional advice in its book-repair guidance and books FAQ.
A damaged collector’s book is rarely used. Consider leaving it untreated, boxing it, and improving storage. This can avoid unnecessary intervention while protecting the item, according to the Library of Congress books FAQ.
Your main goal is access to the text or images, and the volume can be imaged safely. Consider digitization using a workflow suited to the book’s condition and opening limits. Digitization can provide access, but the project purpose and effect on the original should be considered first in the Library of Congress guidelines.
The book has weak joints, a detached cover, a broken spine, tears that may worsen, or brittle material. Pause and seek a stabilization review before imaging; support the book and do not force it flat. Weak joints or restricted opening call for a cradle during capture, and some items need stabilization before safe handling, per the Library of Congress digitization guidelines and stabilization guidance.
You are unsure how fragile the book is or how far it can open. Stop handling it and ask a conservator to assess it. A specific volume’s condition and safe opening limits cannot be determined from general guidance.

Compare the options against six factors: the book’s monetary, historical, or personal significance; the severity and progression of damage; how often it is handled; whether it can open safely for imaging; whether the goal is physical stability, access, or both; and the risks and costs of treatment versus imaging.

When digitization is safe—and when to pause

Do not press a book flat to capture a better image. Pressure can break the spine or loosen or break brittle pages. The Library of Congress recommends a book cradle for volumes with weak joints or restricted opening, and says technicians should be trained in careful handling and safe support. A cradle supports a suitable imaging workflow; it does not make an unsafe book safe to scan.

Some books need minimal conservation work before they can be handled safely for imaging. That stabilization may involve securing a binding feature at risk of further damage, mending a tear that could worsen, or using suitable housing or backing for a brittle item. Severely fragile items may require more involved treatment or may be excluded from imaging, according to the Library of Congress digitization guidelines and stabilization guidance.

For severely damaged books, unusual formats, brittle or friable materials, water damage, or uncertainty about opening limits, seek professional assessment before attempting either repair or scanning. This is general guidance, not an examination of an individual volume.

Why DIY tape and glue can make damage worse

The Library of Congress warns against applying self-adhesive tape—even tape marketed as “archival”—or glue to damaged books. Casual fixes can complicate later conservation, and correct professional conservation can be time-consuming and costly. Avoid rubber bands as well. For leather deterioration known as red rot, its guidance suggests boxing the item to isolate it and consulting a conservator if treatment or handling is needed. It also advises against oiling or dressing leather books in its books FAQ.

Finding help for a privately owned book

The Library of Congress does not provide conservation or digitization services for books outside its own collections. Its FAQ points owners toward private conservators or regional conservation centers and identifies the American Institute for Conservation’s resources for finding conservators. Check a provider’s qualifications, location, fees, and availability directly before arranging work.
