To use a portable 5G hotspot, first confirm that your carrier supports the device and your plan includes hotspot data. Charge and start the hotspot, wait for it to connect to the carrier network, then join its Wi-Fi network from each phone, tablet, or computer using the network name and password. The exact SIM, activation, and menu steps depend on the model.
Before you start
- Check carrier and plan support. Confirm that the hotspot is compatible with your carrier, activated if required, and covered by a plan that permits hotspot use. Carrier rules, tethering limits, and charges vary. Google notes that some carriers limit or charge for tethering, and Motorola says the plan must support data sharing: Google’s Android hotspot guidance and Motorola’s hotspot guidance.
- Find the guide for your exact model. SIM size and orientation, activation, button names, and setup screens are not universal. Use the hotspot’s quick-start guide or official support page.
- Charge it or prepare compatible charging equipment. Accessories differ by model. For example, AT&T lists a 4,000mAh battery, power adapter, and USB-C cable for its GoLink 5G hotspot; that is a model-specific specification, not a battery-runtime estimate or a standard kit for all hotspots. See AT&T’s GoLink device setup page.
Install the SIM and battery if your model requires them
Follow the labels and instructions for your hotspot rather than assuming its tray or SIM orientation matches another device. As one specific example, AT&T’s GoLink guide instructs users to remove the back plate, open the SIM cover, insert a NanoSIM with the gold contacts facing down and the notch toward the top right, close and lock the cover, place the battery contacts-first, and reattach the back plate. Other models may use a different SIM format or assembly process. The GoLink steps are in AT&T’s setup instructions.

Power on and wait for the carrier connection
Use the power procedure in your model’s guide. For the AT&T GoLink, AT&T says to press and hold Navigation/Power until the AT&T logo appears, then allow the device time to start and connect to the AT&T network. That sequence applies to this example, not every hotspot. Depending on the model and carrier, setup may also require activation or an app; there is no single activation process for all devices. See AT&T’s GoLink setup page.

Connect a phone, tablet, or computer over Wi-Fi
- On the hotspot, find its Wi-Fi network name (also called the SSID) and password. They may appear on its screen, label, or setup guide.
- On the device you want to connect, open its Wi-Fi settings and choose the hotspot’s network name.
- Enter the hotspot’s current Wi-Fi password and connect.
- Open a webpage or app to confirm that the connected device has internet access.
Google documents the same network-name-and-password process for joining a phone’s hotspot. Its instructions are for Android phone tethering, not a universal menu path for dedicated hotspot hardware: Google’s Android hotspot guidance.

Secure the Wi-Fi network
Keep password protection enabled and use the strongest security mode that both the hotspot and your devices support. Motorola identifies WPA3 as its most secure supported option, says WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode may not work with older devices, and describes WPA2 (AES) as a broader-compatibility option. Avoid an open network. These are Motorola’s recommendations; the modes available on your hotspot may differ. See Motorola’s security guidance.
If an unfamiliar device has joined, change the Wi-Fi password. Some supported Motorola models also provide connection limits or allowed-device controls, but availability and menu paths vary by model: Motorola hotspot settings.

Manage battery use and Wi-Fi settings
Hotspot use can drain the battery. Motorola warns, “Using the hotspot really drains the battery!” Actual runtime depends on the device, signal, settings, and use; the cited guidance does not give a runtime figure. For longer sessions, use compatible charging equipment if the model permits it, enable automatic shutoff when idle if available, and turn the hotspot off when you are finished. Google gives similar general advice for phone tethering: Motorola’s battery guidance and Google’s Android hotspot guidance.
Wi-Fi band and compatibility controls depend on the device and market. Motorola describes 5GHz as an option to reduce interference and 2GHz as an option for stronger signal on supported devices; availability can vary by country. These descriptions are not a guarantee of a particular speed or range. If a device cannot see the hotspot, check its supported band and compatibility settings in the model’s guide: Motorola’s Wi-Fi settings guidance.

If a device will not connect or has no internet
- The hotspot will not start or reports a SIM issue: Check the device’s status and consult its manual before reseating a SIM. AT&T’s GoLink, for example, displays “No SIM card” when no SIM is present; that message is specific to that device. See AT&T’s GoLink guide.
- The hotspot starts but does not connect to the carrier: Check device compatibility, activation, account status, and local carrier service. Contact the provider if the device still cannot connect; the steps and status screens vary by model and carrier. AT&T’s setup guide describes its GoLink connection process, while Google’s guidance notes that carrier restrictions can affect tethering.
- The client rejects the Wi-Fi password: Confirm you selected the correct network name and enter the current password. If the device has an old saved password, forget that network and reconnect with the updated one.
- The client cannot find the network: Make sure the hotspot is on, then check its supported band and compatibility settings. Options vary by model and country: Motorola’s band guidance.
- One device cannot join while others can: Check whether its Wi-Fi capability supports the hotspot’s security mode. Motorola notes that older devices may not join WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode; WPA2 (AES) may be the compatibility option if your hotspot offers it: Motorola’s security guidance.
- Devices join Wi-Fi but have no internet: Check carrier service and plan eligibility. A Wi-Fi connection to the hotspot does not by itself establish that the carrier connection or account is active; tethering restrictions and charges vary. See Google’s carrier guidance and Motorola’s plan guidance.
Portable hotspot or phone hotspot?
A dedicated portable hotspot is a separate device; a phone hotspot shares that phone’s mobile connection. Either approach still depends on carrier support and plan terms, and the practical choice also depends on battery and charging needs, security controls, and the devices you want to connect. Google documents Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering for Android phones, with a stated Android-to-Mac USB limitation. Those options do not describe every dedicated hotspot: Google’s Android tethering instructions.
If you are choosing dedicated hardware, verify the carrier and network compatibility, activation and plan rules, supported bands, charging arrangement, Wi-Fi security options, and client-device compatibility for the exact model. The available official guidance here does not rank hotspot models or compare current carrier plans.
