Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ says cross-play works between all platforms, while its release announcement specifically includes Switch 2 in the full-cross-play lineup. The Switch 2 version launched September 9, 2026, according to Nintendo of America and Iron Gate.

Can you play Valheim on Switch 2 with PC, Xbox, or PlayStation?
Yes. Valheim supports cross-play across its listed platforms: PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. That means players on different systems can share a multiplayer session; it does not mean they share a save file.
Nintendo of America also labels the Switch 2 edition for cross-platform play and lists online play for 1–10 players on its product page. That range is Nintendo’s listing, not a performance guarantee.

Joining a friend with a join code
Iron Gate’s general Crossplay FAQ describes joining by code. Its instructions are general rather than Switch 2-specific, and the FAQ does not establish that every platform’s menus are identical:
- The host starts a game or dedicated server.
- The host opens the pause menu and copies the Join code.
- The friend selects Join Game, chooses Add server, and pastes the code.
The same FAQ says Xbox players can join a dedicated server when cross-play is enabled. It does not provide Switch 2-specific troubleshooting instructions.

Can you transfer a Valheim save to Switch 2?
No cross-platform save-sync path for Switch 2 is documented. Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ says the one exception to its general no-sync policy is that an Xbox player can access Xbox saves from a PC copy when Valheim is launched through the Microsoft Store. It does not list Switch 2 as part of that exception.
So if you have a world or character on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation, do not expect it to appear on Switch 2, or to sync back to those platforms after playing on the console. Cross-play lets different systems meet in multiplayer; it does not carry progression between separate platform versions.

Is Nintendo cloud backup the same as a cross-save?
No. Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud is a backup feature, not a way to sync a save with PC or another console. Nintendo’s UK Valheim listing says the game does not support that cloud-backup feature. The listing also says online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; that requirement concerns online access and does not add cross-save support. Membership terms can vary by region.
Which Switch version is supported?
The release discussed here is the Nintendo Switch 2 edition, released September 9, 2026. Iron Gate’s Switch 2 announcement describes cross-play and features including mouse mode, touchscreen menu support, advanced vibrations, and gyroscope aiming. A later developer post says the release is for Switch 2, not the original Switch. Nintendo’s current US listing identifies the edition as digital and lists a 4.4 GB file size; Nintendo UK also lists 4.4 GB. These are regional store specifications and may change.
